San Francisco considers displaying phone radiation levels next to price tag
If the San Francisco Department of the Environment gets its way, starting as soon as next month Bay Area residents might start noticing the radiation levels of cellphones displayed prominently next to their respective price at retail outlets. This is, of course, despite no definitive research that the handsets cause harm and the FCC's insistence that the devices sold to consumers are safe. The proposal is being endorsed by Mayor Gavin Newsom, who as it's noted is not about to stop using his iPhone anytime soon. Not to worry, Maine, you'll still keep the top spot for most ridiculous cellphone warning label.

3.) Tin foil hats
@Atkins
Well, most people carry cell phones near their--to use the term delicately--junk right in their pocket. They're preemptively trying to stop the next generations from being mutant cell phone lobster babies.
Short and sweet: cell phones and their regulation are important (though not this specifically).
I, for one, totally trust the FCC to determine what's safe or not. Just like I trust the FDA or any other government organization that's controlled by industry lobbyists.
I think its a great idea. Why not know the radiation level of the device?..It would probably force radiation level lowers as manufacturers race to not be the one with the highest. Cant hurt.
Just backs up the facts. Cali is f'in crazy. Leave it to cali pretty soon they will have everyone wearing those cool tin foil hats.
SF needs to just dump themselves all into the ocean and it over with once and for all. They probably think it would save the planet (and they'd be correct).
Go dump yourself in the ocean. I certainly don't agree with this policy, and to say that me and my friends should kill ourselves over it is just plain insane.
I can see the App voicing it's opinion....It's not a Tumor....
Its still some how amazes me how stupid people are. Seriously, I sell phones and when I hear crap like this I just laugh. I have had a phone since I was 15 and I am 21 now. No brain tumors here!lol Not yet at least. Haha knock on wood.
Remember OJ's Lawyer Johnnie Cochran? He died at his home in Los Angeles on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 from a brain tumor thought to be caused by cell phone use. Cochran's tumor was on the left side of his brain. He was known to hold the cell phone on that same side. I do believe there is something to radiation and prolonged use/exposure that does damage to the human DNA.
@polster, many people believe that a snake can talk, a bloke can put all the animals on one barge and that a virgin can give a birth, that still doesn't make their beliefs any more valid than believing in Santa or Tooth Fairy. I KNOW that non-ionizing radiation cannot damage human, or any other, for that matter, DNA. How? Well, there is a thing called science, and there is a thing called research, and there is a thing called education which I primarily spent on studying various forms of radiation. Radiation coming out from your cell phone cannot do anything to your cells (except warm them up a tad bit), specially not something DNA-damaging, and you can believe otherwise as much as you like...
60 YEARS AGO doctors recommend smoking as means of losing weight. But today we know the LONG TERM effects of smoking. After smoking for many years your risk of cancer increases double or triple or more (besides the other known negative health effects). It will be the same with cell phone radiation. Today we are learning about the LONG TERM effects of cell phone radiation, these effects are very harmful and include cancer. They begin to be noticed around 10+ years of usage. California is doing a good thing and I look forward to other states following. Cell phone companies can reduce radiation without harming the signal too much. For more information, and especially if you are a parent, I highly encourage you to get educated for your children's sake here are some links:

In the late 90s one of the large cell phone companies funded a $25 million research project. When the researches reported that cell phone radiation (as all radiation with enough power and time) increases cancer risk the company immediately ended the program and refused to publish the findings. This information is in the above video (second link).
Also don't be so naive, can't you see that maximizing shareholder returns and public safety are a conflict of interest. We don't need socialism to fix this problem but we need to end corporate fascism and return to a government by the people and for the people.
I think this is a great idea and there should also be a big warning label permanently attached to the back of each phone. People need to know the risks of using cell phones. Cell phone users are a huge drain on our healthcare system and will likely increase in the coming years.
@(Unverified) Huge drain on the healthcare system? Really? Where did that come from, out of your ass?
@derX
O c'mon i think it will be fun to be a mutant lobster ell phone thing, walking sideways and having huge claws to rip non mutants apart yep sounds like a great life to me as for cancer im sure ur microwave cusses more cancer than a cell phone will ever! not to mention those sneaky bananas!
...so people would just ignore it, like any over-zealous warnings out there. In the end, it only desensitize the public to the point that they also ignores common sense and obvious warnings. This is also only useful if there's a reference number about what level is dangerous. Posting the number without any reference is useless.
Heck, when the last time you read warning labels/medication guides that comes with your prescription drugs? I got a 3 pages(!) of medication guide warning me about some super rare side effect of a generic anti-biotic that's been on the market forever. It just becomes silly.
For a cogent discussion of the scientific evidence, you can read an editorial written in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute written by a physicist at the University of Maryland, Robert Park. The editorial is available for free at
http://jnci.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/reprint/93/3/166?maxtoshow=&HITS=10&hits=10&RESULTFORMAT=1&author1=Park%2C+Robert&andorexacttitle=and&andorexacttitleabs=and&andorexactfulltext=and&searchid=1&FIRSTINDEX=0&sortspec=relevance&fdate=3/1/2000&tdate=12/31/2002&resourcetype=HWCIT
Sorry for the long link. Also available by searching for an article by Robert Park in 2001. He has continued to follow the literature and nothing has changed the overall conclusion that cellphones do not pose a hazard.
@fatherbartholomew, ah, what do the scientists know...
abootin, Jordan, Mr. Pips and others clearly know better. Who cares about microwave radiation, photons and other science mumbo-jumbo when they have their firm beliefs?
Btw. brilliant analogy in that editorial - "...It’s a little like trying to hit an object across a river with a stone. Even if your aim is poor, you might expect to hit the target now and then if you throw enough stones. But it won’t matter how many stones you throw if you can’t throw that far. Microwave photons heat tissue, but they do not come close to the energy needed to break chemical bonds, no matter how intense the radiation."
More uselessness from a hack mayor who has done more harm than good.
@ecco6t9 More headline grabbing from the same guy who considered making public transportation free "because it costs more to enforce collection than the city makes." Instead, the price of bus fare went up 33%. Basically this is PR cover for his failed run for governor.
WHAT DOES THE ANIMATION/STICKER AT THE BACK SAY i CAN'T WORK IT OUT...sorry 4 caps
