Android 2.0 officially coming to T-Mobile G1?
We don't know where this is coming from so take it with a grain of salt, but rumor has it from AndroidSPIN that the progenitor Android device, the T-Mobile G1, is destined to officially get an over-the-air update for an Eclair build, Android 2-point-something. Hey T-Mo, we know the holidays are pretty much over, but could you validate these whispers for us? Thanks!

I would love this; here's hoping! Then my G1 wouldn't feel -quite- as behind next to my roommate's Droid!
@Byzil
My phone is still better
Motorola W233
@Byzil Dude, we get it. you have a Motorola w233.
@Sea Urchin
you have a Motorola? LOL hang yourself
@Sea Urchin
My Bell Model 102 is even better.
@Byzil You're lucky. Canada is still using 1.5 on the G1. Rogers is a worthless piece of shit.
@Macmee "Eclair build, Android 2-point-something. It's not specified which version -- whether it's 2.0 or the Nexus One-tastic 2.1" There has been a debate whether Nexus one will used the eclair as said on its specs or will it stick (predicted) on the newest android platform which is the 2.1: http://bit.ly/nexus-one-detailed-view
But this one is really a good news for T-mo, or as endgeeks put it. "careless whisphers" :D
@Byzil
Hell, I just want it on the my MyTouch 3g. The poor phone is only a few months old and feels as outdated as the G1 with all the other awesome Android phones popping up all around me.
Yup, and so the fragmentation begins...
thank you! glad to see that "google experience" phones wont be left out in the cold just because they came out a little more then a year ago.
bravo tmo.
@Engadgeter
Do you know if the update will only be pushed to G1's still on Tmo's network? I'm using mine on AT&T; will I still be able to update (assuming there is one)?
You should be able to flash it from an sd card (put the file on the sd card, boot while holding the home key, then hit alt + some other button I think its 's' go on the xda forums for better instructions)
Just the G1...no My Touch 3G update?
Hard to believe they'd leave the MT3G behind, the two phones are nearly identical besides the keyboard and a little more ROM on the newer phone.
Both phones got official Donut at the same time.
@MeanSpyvie
This is big news cause Tmobile stated earlier that the G1 and only the G1 was not going to get the 2.0 update out of there Android lineup. That means yes it is going to get 2.0.
@psychoace tmobile did not say that a google exec said that then when xda showed it could be done then announcement for an update
@psychoace
Actually, someone from Google said that the G1 would not get any updates past cupcake (1.5) due to internal memory limitations on the device. But that proved untrue when we were lucky enough to get an OTA update to Donut (1.6), we can only hope that we get another update on the G1. If we do, the update will probably go out to the myTouch at the same time.
@Tehuti I'm sure if there is a G1 update then those great people at XDA devs will create 2.0 ROMs for the Magic. I mean Cyanogen is already working hard on implementing parts of 2.0 into CyanogenMod.
@tastypotato Maybe they're just rewarding the early adopters.
I'll still be upgrading to the Nexus One when it comes down the pipeline, but this will do for now.
@Cena
I got to mess around with the Nexus One at an ugly sweater party last night, and it was awesome. Very snappy, huge screen compared to my G1, and just an overall great feel as it's so thin. I think it's going to be a huge hit. Come to think of it, I should have just run out of the party with that thing. Now I'll have to pay retail! :-/
With the new optimizations to Android, I'm guessing the G1 would be able to handle 2.x with a little more ease, right?
Would be great to see Android looking snappy on the G1 - Still think this is a great phone :D
Wait... how pissed are Canadians right about now?
@m2h how do you do that man?
@mytey0

Thats how.
@XIYL wow, thanks a lot !
@mytey0 It always blows me away to find out that a G1 owner has never taken advantage of the fact that his phone is open source. The crack to root your phone is pretty easy and only needs to be done once. I will warn you though, flashing roms to your phone can become an addiction. Make sure to also install RA's recovery environment after you get it rooted. It will allow you to do everything from backup your current ROM too properly formatting your SD Card. If you do not have a class 6 SD card I would suggest getting one. You can get by with a lower class card, but the experience is better with a higher class.
Start with this thread to root your phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
Instead of installing the roms he has listed as the last step in the tutorial above just use one of the newer ones like Cyanogen found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567610
After this go ahead and install RA's recovery environment as it is far more useful then the standard one. You can find that here

* Note that you should see the Rogers version further down on the page
Enjoy your new addiction
Oh, my ROM of choice at the moment is
[ROM][32B/Dream][Dec23][Dwang][Donut][Speed and Stability][v1.17.1]
wow; they are going to need to trim the ROM down a bit to make it fit on the G1. I had to run the apps of the MicroSD (via APP2SD) just to get an 'optimized' 1.6 ROM to run on my G1 (and then it was pretty damn slow).
@Broo Though about getting a faster microSD card. They go up to class 10 (10 meg write, 20 read) on an 8 gigger.
@cfhuk I have a class 10 SD in my digital camera, but I haven't been able to find anything faster than a class 6 in MicroSD.
Does anyone know a site that sells C10 microSD (preferably 8GB or 16GB)?
@cfhuk Doesn't matter cause the phone down clocks it anyway. Otherwise the phone would use up to much juice and you will have a dead battery much quicker
1.6 made a world of difference for speed on the G1 compared to 1.5. I can only imagine what 2.x will do.
Has anyone heard anything more about when the Eris will be getting 2.0 or 2.1?
@Steve B
They're all Android phones, why don't they all get the update at the same time, it sounds so clunky and WinMo-esque
@Wesscoast Different hardware, different kernels.
@cfhuk And the Eris has a whole different framework due to HTC's Sense UI. That takes time to recode as well.
@Wesscoast
You need to remember that there is a difference in hardware. They are all android phones, yes. However there are android phones and Google Experience android phones. The Google Experience phones seem to get update right around the same time, other android phones are updated when the manufacturer changes the code to fit the differences on their models.
Still waiting for 2.0.1 on the Milestone (UK Droid). 2.0 is slow and clunky and not recommended for use on a phone you'd want to use. I'd hope they were putting 2.1 onto the G1.
@Steve B
G1 is a perfect device for 2.0.*
I have it already running 2.0 AOSP build here in Russia but the firmware is better official,not homebrew because for example contacts sync and camera doesn't work yet.
@yellowmegaman i have 2.0 on my g1 google apps contacts in all the build u picked asop aree bare roms without google apps thats your problem don't like homebrew then u don't like having google apps,market place,contact sync ect...
@Atlantian Actually i like google apps but have no ability to have them by default,proprietary stuff(.but i have half-working eclair google apps from GoldenArmz user from xda-developers
Like the guy running 2.1 is gonna hold the elevator for the guy running 1.6! C'mon!
You guys are reaaalllllyyy late on this one. All it took for me was a call to T-Mobile asking if the G1 would receive the Android 2.0 update officially, and they said yes it definitely will and it's no secret, but they don't know when.
This was a bit more than a month ago for sure, if memory serves
What if you were to buy a G1 to use it like an iPod Touch? There are several available for fairly cheap ($90) on eBay. Would you be able to get the update to the new version? Or would this have to be done through TMobile? If somebody thinks they know please reply to me on Twitter @JugglingWJ. Thanks in advance!
@JugglingWJ
I'm sure if you have a T-Mobile sim (even an inactive) as long as you can connect to wifi you should be fine.
@JugglingWJ Yup. I don't have data. all you have to do is download the update on your pc, put it on an sd card, hit home + power to go into recovery mode, and install. although, in all honesty, the music app in android sucks horribly. there aren't many good replacements either imo. tunewiki (or w/e it's called) was slow for me, mixzing runs in the background, and meridian is butt ugly. The only good one is the one on the htc hero, but to get it working on a g1, you need an htc hero rom installed, and they are really really really really really really slow. (btw, a rom is basically just the operating system)
Good stuff. All the more reason so to dump WinMo phones. Bravo for Android.
Rooted my G1. Couldn't be happier in my unsupported netherworld. Tethered my ass off on the trip home today (OK, not really. Edge most of the way. Nothing in parts).
Now when can we expect this for the iphone? .....ATT really needs some android phones ;_;
@Midnitte
you ain't kidding. I am so sick of not having 3g I almost want to give up my beloved android phone. Would really love a android phone with a physical keyboard that supports ATT 3g.....
I live in South Georgia and ATT's 3g is absolutely phenomenal here. It is faster than my home dsl. 'Course I don't live in a city where 3million folks are trying to access it either (population 7000 and most prolly dont have cell phones)
