@pinetreehater
same here, i have a mytouch through my work, but att for my personal service. Been waiting for att to get something android so I can get rid of my blackberry and get a real browser. Sigh, tmobile inet sucks, even their 3g is unbelievably slow here.
I had Droid envy until I read this. Good news, I won't need to upgrade.
@Monkey Fetish The Droid still has much, much faster hardware than the G1. I own the Magic, it's SLOW, lagging all the time. I'd almost wish there was no multitasking support...
@kadajawi I've had the G1 since day 1, and I do a fair amount of development on the platform. I tried the Droid for a while. You don't buy the droid for 2.0. You buy it because of the display and it is, as mentioned, much, much faster.
From day 1, when people asked about the G1, I said I can't wait until the next gen of phones come out, because those will kick a. Droid is that next gen (although I'm crossing my fingers that I get a nexus invite).
@kadajawi Buy an iPhone then. Multitasking is indefinitely useful, use it responsibly if it chugs.
omfg....rogers (canada) if you dont get on this ill kick small babies
Anyone who has an android and has not rooted is probably interested in posts like these.
@newjaruz Those of us that have root already should be interested as well. As of right now, no 2.0 roms have a functioning camera, as we need new drivers for it. An official rom means we should be getting these drivers soon.
I dont have to wait for them since I rooted my phone, the nav works beautifully (I leave it muted) and all the new UI updates are great. ATT will never get android because of the iPhone.
I love my g1, and frankly see no reason to upgrade unless I want to measure dicks. Yippee!
And for how long will Engadget ignore Gizmodo's extensive hands on write up of the Nexus One?
@TareG that hands on was quite possibly one of the worser posts I've read in a long time (for many reasons, but I'd rather not waste time here). I let the author (Jason Chen) know that in a hearthy comment, and he banned me from Gizmodo because of it.
pretty damn pathetic and insecure of him. call me stupid but I won't be reading gizmodo anymore and will be relying on engadget for my gadget news needs ...thank you engadget for not banning your users and letting us speak our minds!
@yyandrew This is untrue. I know "this guy" who got his account zapped simply for being critical of an Engadget writer in a comment that wasn't attacking or inflammatory in any way. Oh well...
damn, i just ported my g1 number to a hero on sprint. Oh well, tmo had no 3g where i lived.....
I'm hoping for an OS upgrade that addresses the HTC radio stack but not sure if Google would be the one providing it since the phone is made by HTC.
I've noticed that both myTouch 3G's I've used have had poorer RF (in technical terms) by reading the dBM's in various locations when compared to my RIM 9700 (3G) or my RIM 8900 (2.5G).
I really am a sucker for Android now and also curious to see if the myTouch line gets 2.0 around the time the G1 does!
They better Google is becoming like apple has soon as u buy a phone a new better one comes out next month for almost the same price
The G1 is the coolest looking Android handset ever imo.
HTC needs to make a successor to the G1.
@JONNNathannn: Also, the trackball on the chin is much better placed than the D-pad on the Milestone.
It's more of a form-follows-function design.
@JONNNathannn They need to not make it under powered is what they need to do. 1Ghz snapdragon + 512MB of RAM + 512MB ROM + MicroSD + 3.7" screen and I would drive my car through a t mobile store to be first in line for it.
As it stands I'll prob drop T Mobile this fall assuming I don't get so frustrated before then and fling this G1 pile of crap out my car window. I hate this phone. All 3 G1's that I've had since launch day.
@JONNNathannn Couldn't have said it better myself! Its very Futuristic-retro kind of like the gadgets on the original Star Trek series. Its comfortable to hold and I really love the keyboard as well, actually like the kb better than the one on the droid that I've tried out. If they released the G1 version 2 as they were saying before with comparable specs as the Nexus, that would be a total winner. And of course a Bigger updated screen as well would be nice.
I wonder how large the Eclair build is. I know the navigation on the G1 goog maps is not 100% complete, so I wonder if this will be a FULL Eclair or a specialized one for the G1 (and mytouch for that matter).......
My G1 got stolen and I went and bought the CLIQ.
I like it, BLUR and all, but I would LOVE an update from 1.5...at least 1.6 so I can POSSIBLY get Google Maps Navigation. 2.0 and above on this thing would be FABULOUS...but gotta wait on the big guys first.
T-Mo? Moto? Hello?
hooray! (albeit with a rather large pinch of salt...)
Historically, Google employees would throw their newest code, internally called 'sabo' into older phones; making them run slowly. Hence the term 'sabo-tage'.
good luck, G1 owner.
Don't really care what OS they put on it at this point. After 3 G1s, numerous hacked versions of Android, and hoping something would just "happen" I have come to the conclusion that the hardware in the G1 is an underpower, cheap pile of shit. It can't multitask, it doesn't have a real headset jack (Note that I lost the ability to do stereo on the cable that converts USB to the jack...now I need to go out and buy a new fucking cable.), the screen is too damn small, the touch of the screen seems to be hit and miss (This occurred on all 3 of my G1's over an 8 month period, so don't you dare tell me its just mine. And did I mention that the system is sloooooow. This is the biggest deal killer for me. The OS may have been refined over the last year. The hardware, simply put, is shit.
I would LOVE to get a new phone. There are none that have a real keyboard, and no that Moto is not an option. Its simply a clone of the G1 with more software features built in. Most likely I'm going Sprint this fall when my T Mobile contract is up and get a Pre. Fook T Mobile and fook the G1.
Its a great phone....if you aren't going to really do anything with it.
@John Doe wawawa wipe your tears away you sound like a crybaby I've had a G1 since the beginning it was the best phone at the time and it is still a great phone if you hate it so much stop being cheap and get something better and good luck with the pre hahaha it really is a cheap phone so I'm betting someone like you will go through about five or six and you will be back on this site bashing palm
@John Doe
Sounds like you are the typical gadget lightning rod for troubles. Not disputing the veracity of your claims, only that there are people who have endless problems with something that works flawlessly for others.
I have 2 G1 handsets and they have performed as advertised. Integration with the cloud that eliminates the need to deal with sync issues makes it superior to all of the WinMo phones that I've owned. The included apps work as designed.
Considering that it is a 1st gen device, it has been surprisingly trouble/bug free.
@John Doe i have a G1 as well and its not slow at all (unless youve loaded it down with crazy amounts of crap), I love android and the G1, fook you and your soon to be pre
Although the idea of 2.x on my G1 is great, I won't hold my breath on this one.
