Peek gets a Facebook app, sort of
Peek devices are usually quite resolute in their single-purpose ways, but it looks like things are starting to change -- the company is beta testing Facebook integration called PeekSocial. Once you install the app on your Facebook account, you'll be able to update your status easily, and you'll also receive periodic emails that pull content from your newsfeed. Yeah, it's a little hacky -- how about enabling support for a real Facebook app, Peek?

How's about this, peek?
Cease to exist.
@Cam aaaw, don't be too hard on Peek, most people haven't heard of them as it is. Then again, this thing is quite fugly :x
@Cam "How's about this, peek?
Cease to exist."
Now if only twitter and facebook would also follow your suggestion....
@jamiepgs
i mean, the first thing i thought of was, here's the "i only do one thing" device, now trying to do more stuff.. cuz.. people demand it...
which is why everyone has a smartphone that has all these mobile apps, instead of just one device for when you wanna tell the world "I just totally took a dump"
@Cam
So will you say the same line on every article that mentions the peek? and will people vote you way up every damn time for being so self-centered that only gadget you want may exists?
Or is twice enough?
@Wwhat
Wow just complain about everything, why don't you?
I think we can all agree that there is no demand for this device and that Cam's comment was more than warranted.
@Steve B
I refuse t agree with that, the more competition the better (no matter how small that competition really is). Just because I have no interest in it doesn't mean I don't want it to exist..
Personally I like reading about the peek.
Its cute.. in a way
This doesn't matter because people who have (read: use) Peeks have no friends :-)
The whole point is that they do one thing and do it well. If they become general purpose they'll need to improve the hardware and then you might as well just buy a blackberry.
The iPhones got nothing on this
@MaxL I know that was sarcasm, but this still, somehow, manages to have better 3G coverage.
Finally!! A great reason to buy it!! I'm getting mine this weekend!! So excited!! Not.
At least this isn't a new FacebookPeek
@hyperACTIV FacePeek.
@Dogcowsaysmoof
That reminds me of a tech joke I heard once. FaceBook, YouTube, and Twitter announced a merger that will take place next year. The new company will be called YouTwitFace.
@Dafrety
That was a bit from the Conan O' Brien show. In The Year 3000!
Upon reading this post Peek's status was just updated from completely ridiculous to just plain ridiculous.
P.S. I almost got a twitter peek for my ex as a gag gift but I went with a snuggie.
Peek gets facebook.... the rest of the world still uses their phones
@moggyx
...or Facebook.com on a... computer!
@Michael Scrip Michael shoots, he scores!!!
@moggyx
Thank you, Thank you... You're far too kind!
@Michael Scrip
you know that the iPod is a netbook right?
@Wesscoast
I have an iPod Nano... then there's the iPod Classic.
Oh... you meant the iPod Touch... the portable media player.
Anyway... no... the iPod is not a netbook.
Would you like to retract your previous question?
@Wesscoast I did not know that.
@Wesscoast
A netbook without VLC-Player/KMPlayer/Media Classic Player/similar prog.
Fail.
I just. Don't. Get it. Really, how many units have they shipped? One for each of their 6 employees?
@Astrobiology is my wife
Don't forget the review units!
@Astrobiology is my wife
Yeah, really now...how is this company still alive?
Seriously, Peek should die. There is no meaning for them to exist.
Peek for life for me. I also have a fake iphone that gives an electric shock when I hand it to the pretentious people that care about being fanboys. Go peek
Peek is wonderful!
Peek users are not foolish people who spend $80 for digital service on expensive trendy convergent devices.
@Dr Yusuf AlKindi
Right! Peek users are foolish users that pay for a Peek.
@Valicore I bought one of these for my grandma and its perfect for her. All she wants is to send emails. She doesn't want or need a more costly internet plan at home. She doesn't want to use a computer. She also doesn't want a costly data plan for a cell phone.
$10 a month for email without a contract is a pretty good deal. The hardware on this thing isn't that bad either.
So is this device being properly marketed? Probably not. Their target audience is definitely not the readers of Engadget directly, but they do have an audience and a decent purpose.
That being said, I hope the Twitter Peek doesn't make them go under. That is a dumb device.
I think what the hell if you like it that's your business, but they couldn't get Twitter on the Peek to work decently. If it can't handle the immense processing power required for TWITTER, how the hell could it do 'real' Facebook?
hows about, instead, releasing an Android version of the Peek, so that it can have a more multi-purpose use case?
@(Unverified) But then it wouldn't be a peek?
@Cam I'm sure they'll survive the shift to multi-purpose gadgets :-)
Ok look. SocialPeak make sense. If you they can do like Twitter, Facebook, and w/e the hell you kids use these days into one device, I can see them shipping a few unit....
But they must be selling at least a COUPLE since they haven't gone out of business yet....
Get a Blackberry. It can even do the only thing that the Peek can do better than the Peek.
@(Unverified)
So can an iPhone. And a Droid. And a Hero. And a Pre. And an Omnia. And...
@Steve B Yeah, its supposed to be a joke how a BB can do email better than an email-only device. I didn't say DROID or an E71 or whatever couldn't do email. I know they are great at email too.
I'm surprised they didnt create a new one called facepeek.
Seriously, I think this would make a good phone if the screen was a bit bigger, and it had actual phone radios inside of it. I'm not used to vertical keyboards at all, but this seems to be the only one of three I can use.
The other two being the Lotus and the Twist
@Lucas But, until someone bothers, this will be a completely useless device. Though I'm a novelty lover, and may well buy one someday
I'm surprised nobody hacked the Peek yet. Seems like a decent device for emailing and messaging. It would be great if you can use it without the $15 a month service. Especially, considering I can get a used smartphone and pay $100 a year for prepaid SIM card.
@R
Well Peek does offer lifetime service if you buy the device thru Amazon. For at $100/year you'd be recouping your cost at 3 years of use.
@R See http://www.peeklinux.com/index.php/Main_Page
I was wondering how comes Peek hasn't decided to add a messaging app. I mean if the Peek did e-mail, Msn & Yahoo, that'd be excellent. Sounds like a Blackberry in that respect, but obviously not at Blackberry price, no real multimedia and stuff, but at it would be better. They need to do something though, if not this device will stay behind.
Why would i waste $269.99 to get a device that only tweets & pokes thats an xbox 360 arcade & one game
