Sprint says webOS 1.3.5 is hitting the Pre today
Well, lookie here: it's not up on Palm's support site yet, but Sprint is showing a release date of December 28 -- that's today, by the way -- for webOS 1.3.5 on the Pre. This is a pretty nifty little upgrade, you might recall -- nifty enough to get none other than CEO Jon Rubinstein to name-drop it during the company's most recent earnings call -- thanks to the removal of the platform's troublesome app storage limit, better performance, better battery life (particularly in weak cell coverage), and a host of bugfixes sure to put a smile on your pretty face. Let us know how those updates go, alright?[Thanks, Gon Kim]

Why is this BREAKING news?
@revoltracers Because it's the iPh... ah, wait.
@revoltracers
Yeah if it was 3.whatever.whatever on the iPhone it'd be breaking
or 2.whatever on android
they're just being fair
@revoltracers Maybe the author has a Pre?
@derekdevine I don't!
@revoltracers Funny. I think the same thing when I see "breaking news" about the iPhone every. single. day.
@Chris Ziegler What kind of phone do you use? Curious.
@revoltracers Exactly... why is this BREAKING news? As if no one does incremental updates to patch up on bugs and whatnot...
@Chris Ziegler So you wrote a book about a phone that you don't have?
@derekdevine I try to switch every few weeks, but lately I've been using a Droid as my workhorse.
@Jact Well, I had one at the time!
@Broderbund
you meant "if it were..."?
@revoltracers
C'mon guys. Cut Chris and the other Engadget editors a break. Let's put some of your names on the byline and wait a few secs 'til the predictably-tin-foiled-headed lamebrains hurl a few on-the-payroll accusations your way. Relaaax.
...so when can we expect Windows Mobile 6.5 for the Touch Pro2?
@wxrman
In about 5 minutes of work.
XDA ftw.
@wxrman Yeah Duh. Yahoo XDA Developers. Look for the Forum and then look for CDMA Rhodium.
Man I can't wait to get my Sprint TP2. :( I'm going insane!
@Pookiewood That's a incomplete hack... it's more amazing that people think a quasi-functioning rom hack is better than what is currently on the new phone.
I love mine but am curious as to what is available next!
@wxrman Spoken like someone who's either flashed badly cooked ROMs or hasn't flashed at all!
@Pookiewood: The verb you're looking for is "Google," no one uses Yahoo anymore.
1.3.5 is out, video recordings around the corner, flash is due anytime now, all palm has to do is announce GPU support and I'll be one happy camper.
Hmmm...if 1.3.5. is out what is Palm going to show off at CES?
@Rinum009 Yes weren't we promised Flash by the end of the year by Adobe? I was just thinking of that yesterday. They better get busy.
@statelypenguin we were promised flash 10.1 beta but still....
@Freakin Ijit I'm hoping they'll announce something about the Pre 2.
I've been refreshing the update app and no 1.3.5 for me. :o(
@Rinum009
Just got the notification for my Pixi too so it's going to all phones now, not just Pre. Pixi needs the battery save.
Downloading while typing this, can't wait to install so I can get speedier updates to learn more about the apple tablet, because, according to the number of articles on engadget, I do not know nothing about it, and must marvel at its ambiguousness.
@smartmouth I'm still waiting for my update.....
@smartmouth could you please tell how the performance is? My phone is still up to date.
Come on Nokia buy Palm already, get rid of symbian and use webOS !!
Palm is currently MUCH too expensive. Wait till it gets down considerably more in price - say $4/share range or less.
Unfortunately by THAT time everything that sole fans think IS Palm will be both standard stuff out in the world as well as bypassed.
Maybe hoping for a buyout is ill-advised; instead, hope that Palm can introduce something truly innovative that pulls them out of their doldrums.
@Freakin Ijit Introduce something innovative? You mean besides WebOS? If they hadn't introduced WebOS Palm wouldn't even exist anymore.
@eka Nokia has Maemo already.
WebOS isn't innovative unless you think a cool user interface makes for innovation. (note - MANY =do= think that makes for innovation!). Pretty much everything else "in" WebOS has bren done otherwise - of course multitasking, the essence of "Synergy", browser-based functionality, etc etc etc.
Palm needs more than that.
Or a lower stock price so they can get bought.
@eka
totally!! A great OS + the money/power of nokia = AWESOME!!
Picked up my Pre to check for updates. Oh good, it didn't charge last night so it's down to 35%. Plug in charger, wait 45 seconds for the den-den sound that it's charging, check. Click the upper right icon to enable wifi. Takes 5 tries to hit it before it responds, then wait 15 seconds for the drop down, check. Hit turn wi-fi on, wait 10 seconds to respond, check. Wait 30-60 seconds for it to connect to my wireless network, check. Scroll right and click the updates icon, wait about 90 seconds for updates to load, check. Click update all, wait a full 30 seconds for the button push to register, check.
After about 10 minutes, one update has failed with no explanation. Try again, still fails. Delete app (as I have no idea what else to do) and check for updates, my phone is up to date. Awesome. Maybe the battery will survive the 30 minute commute to work so I can plug it in and try again. Maybe.
@JerkyChew
Someone's cranky, if you hate the phone so much just sell it and use the funds to buy something unlocked, pop your SIM card in and your golden.
@JerkyChew HA! Totally feel the same way. Though I did just realize that instead of tapping the upper right icon for wifi, you can drag it down kind of like the window shade on android. And it's way easier. But the extreme lag? 100% agree. My favorite is when I go to call someone and I bring up the phone app, it takes like 15 sec to open, then several taps to get to the recent calls, then like 30 sec before I can either tap or scroll. Very nice.
Or like using the web browser and having all kinds of terrible rendering (only loads what you see in on screen's worth of the site, loads the page but nothing is there, etc. Love it.
@statelypenguin
This is exactly why I didn't buy the Pre, however, I do love WebOS so my hope is that once Palm get the GPU up and running then they can integrate it within the whole OS and take some strain off the CPU. Once my contract on my Hero is up I will definitely give Palm another look.
@JerkyChew My God... every time there is a Pre discussion... there is someone trying to BS some story about how bad their phone is... get a life troll...
@JerkyChew Here's an easy solution: Leave the phone app open. Forever.
Here's another tip: Don't try to tap the top left or right corners. A swipe is just as quick and much more effective!
Here's a third tip: If you find yourself very tired in the mornings, some people suggest that eating an apple is healthier and as effective than a cup of coffee. The more you know!
@mrkalel How is this a troll? It was a legitimate description of exactly what happened this morning when I tried to get the update.
@JerkyChew
1.you need to get a touch stone. anyone who doesn't have one is wasting their time.
2. you can slide your finger down over the battery to bring the menu down. I dont know how you manage to miss that one just any slide down in the upper right corner will bring the wifi on. why is ur wifi off anyways.
3. your phone seems slow maybe an update will help or you should get a replacement.
@martynmcfarquhar Sprint Pre = No SIMM card. Not so easy.
@(Unverified) You fail hard son.
@hs2716
1) the Touchstone is cool but I'm not spending another $50 till the phone actually works
2) I never knew that sliding would open the wifi menu, I'll be doing that from now on. The wifi is off because with it on my battery life is roughly 4 hours.
3) My gf worked for Sprint and she says that the slowness I'm seeing is not out of the ordinary.
I still don't understand were everyone is getting these buggy phones, I received mine about two weeks after they came out and have had no problems with the battery or anything else. I have had the phone at nearly a dead battery and still have been able to make and receive calls.
There have been a few bugs, but I had some software bugs on my old Treo 650 and the Sanyo 4900.
The biggest problem I have is with one of the ad supported apps, the ad server is a piece of crap that keeps bogging down my pre when I run the app.
@JAF30
Eh, I got mine about a month after release. The touchscreen died after about 3 months. Replaced it (was a hassle since I was on vacation at the time), and the second one lasted a month before the touchscreen on it failed too. I take care of my phones, keep them in cases, use screen protectors, etc. My 3rd Pre is doing fine thus far though, and I love WebOS, but frankly, if it fails one more time, I might just trade it in for the Hero :/
@Cin
This makes me wonder if Palm got a hold of some bad parts during the first production run. Like those bad capacitors that everyone and their mother had six or seven years ago. Where I work had numerous pcs and macs go out just because of these capacitors.
Something has to explain the people who like you are on phone three and those of us who have not had a problem yet. And I have dropped mine once even if it is in a case.
now if they'd just come out with a better phone to put this os on...
