OCZ Vertex 2 Pro SSD previewed: awesome, and could do with some 6Gbps SATA love
Speedy SSDs might still be a pipe dream for most of us, but at least picking a top brand isn't a challenge. OCZ would no doubt be a popular choice, and SandForce has just made it easier with its debut SSD controller, SF-1500, to be featured on the forthcoming Vertex 2 Pro SSD. Our friends at AnandTech managed to harvest some jaw-dropping results out of their 100GB prototype -- most notably, the drive topped the charts with 2MB sequential performances at around 260MB/s (which is "virtually bound by 3Gbps SATA"), as well as a 50.9MB/s 4KB random write rate. SandForce dubs the magic behind these results DuraWrite, which is likened to real-time compression on the drive thus saving a significant number of write cycles. No prices announced yet, but hey, do we even care any more?

That sound's GREAT!!
@rhezaganteng
What sound is great?
@Guybrush Threepwood your mom
@rhezaganteng
oo.
good one.
@Guybrush Threepwood
Mighty pirate! Bah! This is the END for you, you gutter-crawling cur!
@pcwzrd13
And I've got a little TIP for you, get the POINT?
My handkerchief will wipe up your blood!
@writeinC
Aha! So you got that job as janitor, after all.
and all this for only 5000$, haha
@DeviantmacG
Sadly, you're probably right.
All this new stuff and it'll cost us a second mortgage on our own home, figuratively speaking.
Hopefully within the next 5 years, and maybe 10 years, these prices will be much reasonable.
@DeviantmacG
The prices to jump in right now aren't that bad. I just decided to get the Intel 160GB and got it for $460 on Buy.com with free overnight shipping too. Like everyone says in reviews, it's totally worth it. It's basically the end of waiting on your PC.Everything you do sees a boost. Even reinstalling the OS once you get it isn't bad because installs are near instant on most programs.
@THizzle7XU
Supposedly they'll be a mid-cycle refresh this year that'll bring lower prices to the intel drives.
@Jeff Kibuule
they'll be to happy to keep prices high and screw us for some more time.
@Jeff Kibuule
Sorta like the last refresh that was supposed to lower prices?
Is it just me, or do online retailers seem to be just pocketing every dollar Intel knocks off the wholesale cost?
@THizzle7XU
From buy.com, the $269 is the Msrp, the $299 is what they're selling them for.
X25-M Mainstream MLC Solid State Drive
80GB X25M MLC SSD 2.5"/9.5mm
Buy new: $269.00 $299.99
At least Buy.com is honest, "Intel dropped the prices on these things, but since none of our competitors did we'll just keep selling them for $300."
@jon
Considering the 80GB first gen Intel SSD was around $600 less than a year ago, I'd say prices came down quite a bit. You just need to find a retailer that has some stock and isn't price gouging at that time. It's not too hard, Amazon had a fair price, and then I say the Buy.com price through their reseller program. Plus Buy.com has Bing cashback on top of that.
@jon
Well, the 160GB is still under MSRP and is the far better value considering the capacity and the firmware update that allows for faster write speeds over the 80GB, and Amazon still has the 80GB retail for $270. Either way, it's cheaper for the 160GB than two 80GB in raid 0.
@THizzle7XU
Actually they were around $600 16 months ago, they've been around $350 for the last 10 months.
http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=3531&p=31
The 80GB drives 1k price is $225. Show me another mainstream Intel product that is selling for more than it's 1k unit price 5 months after launch.
If I could afford this... Who am I kidding, this won't be in my price range until it's superseded. :-(
YE GODS that pic is gonna give me nightmares...
@(Unverified)
lol...
@Unverified User
Someone please post the original pick! kthxbai
@Unverified User
And of course, by 'pick' I meant 'pic'

@Unverified User
Thanks Richard for a link. Can I now also have a time machine so I can uninstall the Engadget App which caused my double-double posting please :(
@Lord Farkward RUINED me breakfast...
@Richard Lai
is that.. eddie murphy on the left?
@Richard Lai That picture is blowing my mind, is that photoshopped? Jeeezusss.....
@Broderbund Could be. Probably doing another fat man movie but with a twist.
Sweet, this will make the normal Vertex prices go down. That's all I need is a $100 60GB drive for my OS and a game or two (said $200 before but times are tough rofl) Hopefully Intel keeps up the competition and will start a price war too.
Is that pic for real ?
@rohitgaba
Dude on the right looks like Ronnie Coleman, and he has been 'shopped quite a bit
@Dudeman
DAT ASS.
@FAP FAP FAP
underage b&
@Dudeman Definitely not Ronnie, but the pic has been altered.
@Dudeman
Ronnie's not white bro
that guy on the end looks like his only possible hope for movement is a lift of some sort.
"The Vertex 2 Pro should come in cheaper than Intel’s X25-E in a cost per GB sense, but for high end desktop and notebook users it may be a tough pill to swallow."
Greater than X-25M then? Well... Back to waiting, especially since:
"Then there's Intel. ... I'm guessing we'll see 160GB down at $225, 600GB at $500+ and the 300GB drive somewhere in between."
Well that bodes well for more affordable SSDs, I hope Anand is right.
Disturbing picture! lol
Beefcake, BEEFCAKE!!!
Oh man, that guy is lucky his 'roids got rid of his penis because that would be some MASSIVE chafing right there.
Does these guys ever think about women?
@Koneck All I can say is, "This picture is really gay."
@Koneck
Doesn't think they do
*shrug*
Wow if that pic is altered the guy did a great job cause I looks real on my phone-by the way how reliable are these ssd's. Maybe engadget should start an SSD reliability poll because I wanto install one on my workstation but it's not rock solid reliable then the performance gain would be completly worthless.
Sweet, 3rd Gen SSD's on their way.
Where's Crucial? Their SSD are as speedy and or faster than most other offering.
@cdf74dc9
No? Theyre the same as the OCZ Vertex/all the other indilinx drives.
Does the Rocket Edition come next?
OCZ SSDs look like a whole bunch of crap to me.
Waiting for the big bang when that SandForce dude bursts in pieces:)
