iPhone and Magic Mouse linked up by BTstack (video)
Even though you probably still can't figure out what good the ability to connect your Bluetooth keyboard to your iPhone will do, the BTstack project is steaming ahead with this demo of a connected Magic Mouse twirling its pointer all over Apple's handset. The driver code is still unreleased, but we get to see some nice lag-free interaction between the two devices, suggesting it shouldn't be too far away from public consumption. As if to answer your earlier quandary, the video also features a Celluon CL800BT virtual keyboard, which projects onto and responds to your touch of any flat surface. A gimmick most likely, but a fun journey into the dream of nomadic computing nonetheless. Check out all the action after the break.

HOLY SHIT.
@ipxnsv
pretty sweet. Now just build a pico projector into the dock and we'll be set!
Within the decade, people will not only stop buying desktop computers (they have already), but they will stop buying laptops and netbooks as well.
People will carry their entire computer in their pocket, and a new breed of peripherals will emerge, in many different form factors, to usher in the new wave of wireless docking. We'll see laptop-looking devices that connect wirelessly to the computer in your pocket, and we'll see larger displays/projectors and mouses/keyboards that do the same thing. However it should be noted that these peripherals will also likely be able to serve as computers themselves, as the cost of powerful processors/memory/etc. approaches zero. Exciting times ahead!
@ipxnsv I said THE EXACT SAME THING!
@crawdad689 +1 For the pico projector
@crawdad689
I will continue to buy Desktops. I've had one laptop and found that it just wasn't powerful enough to do what I need.
I don't get how they got the mouse to actually on in the phone ti self, was the iPhone already setup for that functionality? or does it act like a finger with a click being a touch?
@ipxnsv
It simulates a touch. The code responsible for presenting a pointer and simulating touches is available at (look for MouseSupport):
http://iphone-tweaks.googlecode.com/
Looks sweet. What song is that by Depeche Mode in the background?
@Nzad "Its a Question of time"
@AlaskanHandyman ahhhh thanks I'll check it out
@Nzad
Depeche Mode rock!
On topic.... isn't this pointless? The iPhone's small screen doesn't require a mouse at all. However, I do admire it from a homebrew perspective :)
Why?
if he's typing like that, might as well use the iphone keyboard. I would use a BT keyboard with actual keys. The mouse is a nice idea, but defeats the purpose on such a small screen.
I envision a portable workstation that consists of a BT keyboard, BT mouse, and a pico projector (1024x768). Using the iphone's 3g and logmein, I would be a happy traveler.
@(Unverified) That BT Keyboard:

Great options for those that want to travel light.
WOAH, what's with the keyboard? O_O
iCame.
He didn't show if the scroll works :(
@Echuu
It doesn't; you have to click and drag to scroll.
anyone know what that multi-tasking looking (cydia?) app was that made it look like swiping through apps like on the pre?
@laxic Its called ProSwitcher. Its free!
@laxic proswitcher I believe is the one they were using. From what I have read, it just came out on beta and a lot of people seem to like it a lot. I have not used it yet and am wondering whether or not it will work on my 3g (vs 3gs). Here's for hoping. (oh, and thanks for giving me the key words for searching for this thing on google - pre multitasking iphone)
@laxic Holy Moly is this cool. Yes, 3G is fine and this app is so fun... Will I use it in the long run...? Who knows but this thing is fun.
@ipxnsv and @nicmonson
Thanks for the tip guys! Can't wait to try it out!
There's no point for this really.
@SParklingCYaNide Projector + GoToMyPc= AWESOME.
@SParklingCYaNide
Say whaaat now? Imagine hooking up one of those iphones, with a bluetooth mouse and some nice vr goggles and a freshly installed version of scummVM!
Who the hell needs anything else after that?
@Fillzter Coke and hot pockets!!!
the mouse will be great for islate not iphone. the whole point of iphone was touch based interface..
@timmyjan
Touch is the whole point of a tablet too, jeesh.
Firstly, I'll note this down as "cool" and then I'll follow it up with "but why?" as it doesn't really serve any practical purpose that I can think of.
@rduran
For a traveller, this is ACTUALLY perfect.. Not everybody who has an iPhone has a netbook as well, while many iPhone users probably have a BT keyboard and mouse.. With the advent of pretty decent office apps, on the go word processing etc. while in a hotel room somewhere in the world would be awesome with this, especially if the iPhone were to be projected on a TV screen or through a pico projector...
@Shash450
You really think that if you needed to type something out in a hotel room that the four devices you mentioned together would be a better alternative than 1 laptop or a netbook? Really?
Why it is important is because someone should have been able to make a "Morphie" like case/acessory for the iphone that has a slider style physical keyboard. Whether it works through the dock connector or bluetooth connection is irrelevant. It's stupid for Apple to block the ability to do this. How many people have not bought an iPhone specifically because of it's lack of a physical keyboard option? My bet is that it's a huge number.
To all the people asking "But Why?" Why not? you ask whats the purpose but its not supposed to have a purpose its called a 'proof of concept' its to show that a mouse works on the phone but of course its not going to have any use because ITS A PHONE! Its not designed to be used with a mouse 'YET' If it wasnt for people like this we wouldnt have half the apps we do let alone the iPhone itself.
This is briliant! I will deffinetly use this together with my apple keyboard to take notes during class en to take minutes in small meetings! I love these devellopers!
Three words V.N.C.
I saw that IR keyboard in an episode of CSI Miami ..
Does anyone know the actual name or model of those units?
Pretty Cool!!
@bhagiratha
Celluon CL800BT
The virtual keyboard is awesome. I remember only seeing pictures of it for old palm devices as a concept. I'm impressed to actually see it working (unless there's a guy off camera typing simultaneously on a real keyboard). I still wonder exactly how that works...
@tommyc3po
A laser at the top projects the keyboard layout.
An IR tranceiver at the bottom outputs IR and detects finger position based on reflection. Its correlated with the laser layout and thus can determine which keys you're pressing.
I love technology! But am scared of it at the same time. I think its Avatar's Fault
If i'll buy the Celluon CL800BT, will it work with the iPhone?
@dani3l
If you jailbreak your iPhone, yes.
hi,
I just purchased the Celluon CL800BT Laserkey keyboard based on this blog:
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/iphonehacks/~3/GpTymuMEC3M/btstack-jailbreak-app-makes-it-possible-to-connect-a-mouse-and-virtual-keyboard-to-the-iphone.html
how is that functional in the video and listed as non functional keyboards in the app?
will it be functional in the future?
Thanks,
