Nokia asks ITC to ban iPhone, iPod, and MacBook imports, files another lawsuit against Apple
Looks like Nokia is going all-out in its patent fight with Apple: in addition to the lawsuit it's filed over GSM standards and last week's International Trade Commission complaint, Espoo just filed a second complaint with the federal court, alleging that Apple's infringing several "implementation patents" that cover everything from camera sensors to touchscreens. That's three fronts in the same war, if you're counting -- the original regarding GSM patents, and these two latest over specific device technologies. The biggest bombshell so far is the ITC complaint, in which Nokia's asking the commission to ban imports of basically every Apple mobile product from the MacBook to the iPhone for infringing its device patents -- a strategy we've seen in other high-profile cases. Since the ITC has the ability to move quite quickly, we'd expect that case to be the primary battleground for the moment -- but remember that Apple has plenty of its own incredibly broad patents of its own to fight back with here, so don't expect a quick resolution. Looks like 2010 is going to be awfully good for these attorneys, don't you think?

maybe it's just that I got the flu, but don't nokia just make shit phones?
@primo
you from north america?
Next up on the firing block after Apple, Microsoft. And after that, every other laptop, pmp/mp3 player, Cell Phone manufactures (that don't license with Nokia) that sells their product on US store selfs.
Thus, Making Nokia the leading electronics company in the US. And with nothing in their way to stop them.
Meh. At the end of the day, they'll agree to some kind of cross licensing settlement deal and we'll all forget about this.
I suspect Nokia wants their hands on that Apple multi touch patent in return for a GSM patent-royalty agreement.
Ok, I think that Nokia is getting a little jealous over Apple. And before you bash me, think about this, why is Nokia just now suing Apple when they could have done so earlier?
Nokia might own patents related to GSM but they are obligated to license those patents under the principal of RAND (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reasonable_and_Non_Discriminatory_Licensing). If Nokia hadn't agreed to license its patents under RAND, then GSM would almost certainly not be as ubiquitous as it is today or it would have been engineered around those patents.
I don't know where all these Nokia fanbois are coming from but it certainly does seem like Nokia is being disingenuous in this case. Seriously, what does the Macbook Pro have to do with GSM patents? It seems pretty obvious to me that they're trying to strong arm Apple into getting access to Apple's IP.
Also, you don't seem Palm suing Apple since you could very easily argue that the iPhone is more of a PDA than a mobile phone. Instead they came up with a real competitor to the iPhone.
@scottbr
Have you check the patents that nokia is suing apple for?
The new 7 patents do not have much to do with GSM
patents:
US 6,714,091 (VCO with programble output)
US 6,834,181 (Mobile communication device and related construction method)
US 6,895,256 (optimized Camera sensor)
US 6,518,957 (Touchscreen key guard)
US 6,073,036 (Touchscreen focus/zoom)
US 6,262,735 (Intelligent message parsing with apps)
US 6,924,789 (Multiuse keypad)
These are not GSM patents.
In general, I dont know who is wrong and who is right here. There are not enough information available to get a clear picture what is going on.
@emil1977
...and let me add something interesting... Actually the one which was sued for GSM/GPRS/UMTS patents infringement was Nokia in 2005.. by Qualcomm, which is the one having a HUGE quantity of patents on radio and chipset used for voice and data transmission...
is someone believes Apple is guilty on the GSM/Radio/UMTS... don't forget the key role of Qualcomm... even if I'm not sure, I bet they got a quite complex license schema to protect themselves (like Palm with the Pre).
If you look at the patents, I believe is easy to determine how this will end... can someone explain me how a Macbook or a Macbook Air are involved in the trial?
@pachi72 Nokia will most likely get chewed in court. They should just focus on developing Maemo to compete with the iPhone instead.
Nokia needs new products not lawsuits. However litigation will buy them time to innovate these new products and keep their name in the news.
@georgemag your and idiot apples list of products compared to nokias is laughable (innovation phone akes pictures to phone take video and pictures when all other phones had this ,no copy in paste to having copy in paste yep staying ahead of the curve there buddy) that's innovation well look and nokias product list speaks for itself lets compare apples 3 phones to an uncountable amount of nokias ok I'm done for now......
Nokia and Apple should go out and have a beer together and forget about this crap, and keep reinventing, because i actually like both companys and their devices.

Dear Nokia,
Please f*** off.
Kindly,

If nokia won, I would get a shotgun blow up every guys head who works for nokia, roast them on a spit (like the ones for lamb in kebab restaurants) then feed them to stray dogs, then I would piss on the scraps as disrespect. I wouldn't really do that (well maybe not the shotgun part) but thats how angry I'd be at nokia, after hearing this, I'm not supporting nokia anymore.
Such haters honestly get over it Nokia, you are not number one anymore !
