Viliv's HD5 PMP leaked ahead of CES, packs Windows CE, 32GB of storage
We're just a few days away from the opening of the show and, naturally, we've already seen a few notable leaks. This latest one, courtesy of Viliv, is perhaps on the lower end of the excitement spectrum, but is an interesting one nonetheless. The company that impressed us with a slew of MIDs and UMPCs throughout 2009 looks set to launch another PMP, the HD5. It has a much sleeker looking design than the S5 from last year (just 13mm thick), and higher specs too, packing 8, 16, or 32GB of storage plus SDHC expansion. There's a DMB/DAB tuner, five-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen, HDMI output, and support for 1080p content. Somewhat curiously it's running Windows CE, but we're guessing that'll be nicely hidden behind some sort of jazzy UI -- which we fully expect to be experiencing in the next few days.
[Thanks, Gavin]

Looks great
That's pretty nifty!
Windows CE? FAIL.
Come on people stop coming out with "Innovative" new things with decade old OS.
@CJisohsocool
What do you know about Windows CE 6?
@CJisohsocool
Most company uses Window Ce because it is either cheap or free. It allow Viliv to create thier own Skin and move the product to market faster.
All of these tablets are disappointing me. No stylus on any of them? I want to be able to ink and use photoshop, not just flip through websites.
Well at least we know that ... hardware wise... it looks like... half a MacBook... Not sure if Apple can compete with that :P
Windows CE?
Really? Man, that sucks. :(
At least put XP or some real OS on it.
@tastypotato
Wipe that sucka's SSD and put Chrome OS on it! At least put SOMETHING on it besides....windows CE. ......windows CE????
Windows CE? Next.
It all depends, it this item is $200 I buy one
Looks sexy, Windows CE no thanks
Plus i have 2 old winmo PDAs with 32 SD GB Cards and TCPMP
looking for another OS
Windows CE?? Yeah, lemme get in line for that one. *rollseyes*
Can a WinCE device run another flavor of WinOS?
Guys stop complaining about a "real OS" or "lack of stylus". This is a PMP... NOT a tablet...
Well the Zune HD runs Windows CE and came out pretty nice
Reading these comments is like reading YouTube comments.
Windows CE is just a kernel. Like the Linux kernel. You can use it to build an OS. Microsoft used Windows CE to build Windows Mobile. Google used the Linux kernel to build Android. You can use the Linux kernel to build different OS's. You can do the same with Windows CE. The kernel is just a bunch of code which helps the OS talk to the hardware. Judging the quality of the OS based on the kernel is beyond stupid.
My Linksys router is an unstable POS and its firmware is built on top of the Linux kernel. So, clearly, the Linux kernel must be shit, right?
Saying that Windows CE is crap because Windows Mobile is crap is like claiming that the Linux kernel is unusable because my router keeps crashing!
@Sc4Freak so what you are saying is, this is not targeted at consumers, this viliv device is targeted at developers, namely Silverlight interface outfits that create custom interfaces.... right? Then after these developers
insert "some sort of jazzy UI" it will then arrive in the hands of consumers.
I'd say thats pretty good if they could have some sort of menu that allows browser, email, multimedia station etc, etc... much in the similar vein to android tablets. It would be interesting to watch this space as these markets expand and mature over the coming year.
@Sc4Freak
Same problem with the linksys router, disconnects me randomly.
I have seen video of this devices proto type. it will have a tegra chip. if you want to see what version of windows CE it will run just look up tegra on youtube. you will find it. its pretty easy to find. Ill buy one if the price is right.
Windows CE? Are you f$#@ing serious?
It's a tragedy.
The translated page reads Windows CE AND android dual boot. People who are complaining about WCE need not whine anymore.
@Dano900
Down vote me. I read the wrong part. :p
This PMP is calling to me. Video, music and hella ebooks. Hopefully the price is right. I looks damn sweet. Win CE 6.0 is great. I don't know where all the hate is from. I'm guessing most of these haters have never used 6.0.
To everyone bitching about CE: Windows CE is still regularly updated, and 6.0 is out now (meaning the kernel of course). This means of course that the interface can be skinned to whatever the manufacturer likes. Oh, and I've seen a windows CE device running 1080p playback, so it's time to wisen up kiddos.
