3M unveils 10-finger multitouch LCD display at CES

LAS VEGAS---3M today unveiled the 3M Display M2256PW, a 22-inch high-definition, multi-touch LCD display which demonstrates 3M's commitment to push the boundaries of traditional touch technology. Based on 3M Projected Capacitive Technology, the M2256PW display is designed for professional and prosumer (professional consumer) applications that need up to 10-finger touch input or multi-user interactivity with very fast response time. While most multi-touch technologies support two-finger touch and gestures, 3M's multi-touch technology supports 10-finger touch input and advanced gesture capability.
Introduced in June 2009 at SID Display Week as the 19-inch 3M Multi-touch Developer Kit, this revolutionary technology offered software developers for the first time a "full multi-touch" hardware platform. "Over the past six months software developers from around the world have been working with the 3M multi-touch platform to develop exciting concepts for multi-touch applications," says Chris Tsourides, business unit manager, 3M Touch Systems.
Utilizing this new technology, software developers are able to revolutionize the way users interact with all types of information and to expand traditional touch interaction to include multiple users and increase collaboration. "Consumers and prosumers have come to expect multi-touch functionality in their everyday electronic devices," Tsourides says. "The release of the M2256PW display provides a technological leap in multi-touch interactivity, surpassing traditional two-finger multi-touch by providing full, 10-finger multi-touch capability."
The 3M Display M2256PW features a high-definition 1680 x 1050 LCD screen, DVI and VGA video input, audio input, USB and RS232 (serial) dual-mode communication protocol and durable, anti-glare front surface. Applications taking advantage of this high level of interactivity include computer aided design, digital signage, computer gaming, security monitoring systems, education and training, and teleconferencing. The M2256PW display is "compatible with Windows 7" so no third party touch drivers are required. For Linux and Windows XP/Vista/7 operating systems, 3M plans to offer a multi-touch driver and software utility, and will offer communication protocol documents for customers who wish to develop their own drivers. Additional information is available at http://www.3m.com/multitouch.
The 3M Display M2256PW is being unveiled at the Computer Electronics Show 2010, 3M booth 20723 (South Hall, ground floor, front).

If it isn't 1080P it doesn't cut the mustard am afraid.
@Oflife
It's close enough.
@nrb Close enough? If it isn't 1080 it isn't real HD. Plus this thing doesn't have HDMI. Useless.
Why anyone would buy an LCD today that isn't 1080 and doesn't have HDMI is beyond me.
@dkratter14
good god, addicted to buzzwords much? A 22 inch display with 1920x1080 instead of 1680x1050 isn't gonna be that different. It's still plenty of "HD," way better than 720p. Lean back slightly, and your blu-ray rip will look exactly the same anyway. Really wanna drop a bunch of extra cash for a barely noticeable difference?
If it isn't 16:10, it isn't doing some of your so-called mustard-cutting. At least this monitor hasn't succumbed to that 16:9 nonsense. I value my vertical screen real estate, dammit.
Sweet stuff...
Why new stuff always requires new players?
Status quo sux
But I only have 9 fingers. :(
Quick, they better patent this before Apple tries to claim it as their own!!!
@timmy2000 Apple will claim the 21 finger tablet. With the 21st finger being your...

@Volker
...DINKLE!
NO
LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display, so you cannot call it an LCD Display, it kills me to see this mistake even on Engadget
@sonicfury At least they didn't call it an LED screen like most stores do, making people believe the display technology is somehow different. Wow, no tube for a backlight? Amazing!
@grahamj I've actually never considered that one, good point
It doesn't need HDMI because it doesn't have speakers...
You do realize that HDMI is just DVI + Audio, right?
the above comment was supposed to be @dkratter14
F*** you comment system
Is it just me or does that screen image seem a bit suggestive?
Mmmm Spaceclaim so good.... too bad multitouch for 3D CAD design will never catch on.
Waiting for the 21 finger edition...
Bring on the smudges
ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT THE PRESENT MULTI TOUCH SCREEN TECHNOLOGY
Now, some manufacturers bring out a new type multi touch screen which size are from 12 inch to larger and can be used on LCD. They all announced that they used the projected capacitive technology. To these, I announce below:
These touch screens can determine the exact location of 2 or more touch points, even can output the touch image. And the external feature of them is likely the projected capacitive touch screen and the size of them is larger than 12 inch.
The technology of them is not the projected capacitive as they announced.
It is my technology, a new type touch screen.
My technology detected touch by the variations of electric field, via load the variations of electric field to the ray (such as ultrasonic or light) instead of conductor, get the high SNR and large screen size.
The major difference of the screen base on my technology to the screen base on projected capacitive technology is that my screen contains the sound or light devices, but the projected capacitive touch screen only use conductor and glass, optical gel.
My technology already has been applied for a patent, the priority date is February, 2008. I already applied for a US patent, and will apply for a Europe patent in the near future.
My patent’s PCT international publication date is august, 2009.
I am both the inventor and the holder of the patent, I have not promised any manufacturer use the technology. The multi touch screens use the two structures below:
The first one is suit medium or small size screen:
The second one is suit medium or large size screen
Interested person or you are producing touch screen which is meet the above characteristics, you can contrast these and detection by yourself.
I already got a table pc, the multi touch screen in it is based on my technology, and detected it, and have gotten evidences.
If think make the acoustic wave generator and receiver from transparent piezoelectric materials and conductor will make you can arrogate your touch screen is projected capacitive touch screen then make free with my technology is wrong and dangerous.
Interested person can detected the acoustic (light) wave or wave generator and receiver in the screen to ascertain whether the touch screen use the technology. Now, contact me is welcome.
