Google's Nexus One is official
We know, you're so surprised. Google's finally confirmed the Nexus One. We've naturally heard all about the phone already from dubious sources, and even reviewed the purported device, but now that they've got one in hand up on a stage, we suppose we'll have to set aside all of our doubts. So, the nitty gritty: 3.7-inch AMOLED display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, compass, GPS, accelerometer, light and proximity sensor, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a multicolored LED under the trackball. There are also two mics onboard, one on the bottom and one on the back, for the purpose of noise cancellation à la Motorola's CrystalTalk, and the phone is naturally running the brand new Android 2.1. The phone is actually HTC branded, unlike the pre-release versions we've seen, and can be custom engraved with two lines of text at the time of order, for that extra personal touch (there's a picture of the phone's back after the break). The phone is available today off contract with a T-Mobile compatible radio for $529 unlocked, shipping to the US, UK, Singapore and Hong Kong, or with a two year T-Mobile US contract for $179 (both with free overnight shipping in the US). Most surprisingly, the phone is also headed to Verizon this Spring, and Vodafone will score the device eventually as well.
Update: Tony couldn't resist, and he managed to capture each step of the checkout process while ordering an unlocked Nexus One today. Hit up the gallery below if you're into that whole "living vicariously" thing. Thanks, Tony!
Update 2: Check out the detailed T-Mobile USA pricing options here. Thanks, Kamran!

@mpv
Thanks! Seems like the EM+ is the way to go, if you're upgrading from an old-school plan like ours. Only one of our phones has the t-zones and neither one of has has a 3G phone. So it made sense to us. But now it's time to upgrade. Thanks again!
@Andros69 No prob! Be sure to run the actual numbers though (before you make the switch), just to make sure you're coming out ahead...
Trackball? *snicker
If they don't make a real successor to the G1 (similar specs as this but with a keyboard like the G1) I think I am going to leave android. Things like emulators are useless without a keyboard, and obviously typing in general is better. None of the new android phones appeal to me (the droid is close though), I am going to have to see what palm has in store for CES, I am strongly considering moving to WebOS.
What really annoys me is their update policy.
I bought a HTC Magic for € 99 with a two year contract back in June and there's still no word if it will ever receive Android 2.0, let alone 2.1 (which seems unlikely with its OpenGL rendering for the interface, not that the magic doesn't have dedicated hardware for that, but HTC would probably have to take out the animated water background to make it compatible, which seems like too much to ask from them). No way in hell I'll spend $ 550 for an 2.0 update six months later.
Apple still updates the iPhone 1 from over two years ago, and the HTC Magic and several other phones will only see ONE UPDATE (1.5 to 1.6)? Is that a joke?! People should switch to fruit phone camp for that reason alone.
This is currently the best Android phone on the planet. Bye Droid your time is up.
Just a question, how often do you buy new phone (or how long do you usually keep a phone) ?
Hmm, technical specs say it comes with wireless N, that's very interesting. Just get rid of that trackball and add some dedicated dial/hang up buttons (i guess I'll wait for nexus 2) and I'm sold!
LOOK at the guys face.. Engadget thank you for the happy moments you give my life when i see such a funny expression))
I don't see the LED flash -- unless it's integrated behind the same plastic window that the lens is behind, which seems like it would be a nightmare for image quality (ie, it would refract into the lens).
Well this just sucks. Since I'm on a family plan with TMO there is no way to order this phone. I have to already have an individual plan, OR I have to terminate a line on my family plan (and pay the $200 termination fee) and set up a new line of service (and pay the $35 activation fee). No porting of number either.
I guess I could always buy the phone outright for the $530... but it seems there is no way to do this without getting jacked in my wallet.
After waiting so long... I'm disappointed. Not in the device, but the way to buy it.
"It can run on AT&T’s network if the unlocked phone owner has an AT&T SIM card, but it will only work on AT&T’s older and slower EDGE network not AT&T’s faster 3G network."
why - can someone explain? I want o put my ATT card in there with a data plan, but please... I want faster speeds. why not?!
@narikin Because the US fails and uses weird frequencies. ATT uses 850/1900. The Nexus One has 900/1700/2100 3G frequencies. Sorry ATT. I'm an AT&T user and I'm disappointed, but the rest of the world uses 900/2100. So you can't blame the manufacturers for making a phone that works with the larger market.....
it was $50.xx tax on mine.. :\
One thing is guaranteed this will definitely not outsell the iPhone. As big as google is. iPhone desirability rate is second to none.
I'm not gonna say this will fail but it definitely will fizzle out like instinct voyager droid pre chocolate etc. Seriously who manufactures better cells google or apple??
Exactly.
Overhyped is an understatement.
Google stick to search engines.
@logic thinker
Moron, HTC is making this phone. Google just makes the software and gives it away. Google does websites. They don't do hardware (except for that weird blue thing back in the 90s).
Got on the G1 wagon from day 1, really want the N1, but impossible upgrade options leaves me no choice but to STAY on the G1 wagon. Go cyanogen! I guess, once my contract is up, I can switch to Verizon as a *new* customer and get this phone for $179. But then again by then who knows what'll happen to the mobile industry. LTE??
Will nexus revolutionize smartphone industry like iPhone did?,, no.
Open source so does that mean that it has more apps tha iPhone closed source ?,, no.
Month to month does this mean phone cost less?? No. Nexus $589! iPhone $49.
Will nexus 100% replace a $300 iPod touch music player like iPhone ?, no. Only iPhone does.
So will it appeal to mass markets ,?no.
@logic thinker
Please show me where I can get an unlocked iPhone with no contract for $49.
@logic thinker STFU. The only decent comparison is $180 Nexus One versus $199 iPhone. Or $530 Nexus One vs $599 iPhone.
Don't compare a refurbed version or the old 3G phone. You might as well compare Droid Eris for free versus iPhone then. Plus, wait for a refurbed Nexus One. It'll be cheaper. Apples and oranges comparisons are lame. You're just desperate. I still love the iPhone, but at least I'm not desperate to make crappy comaprisons.
I'm trying. But I seriously can't think of one reason y this will kill iPhone 3gs iPod pmp iTunes app store. Nexus doesn't even have 1 advantage over iPhone. Insane.
@logic thinker
your post is the definition of insanity, I don;t think its worth a reply.
just because your post pissed me off I am replying to you.
advantages over iphone:
snapdragon processor faster
OMLED screen
thinnner...etc etc
enough said, man i am wasting my time here....
@hs2716
Although these are valid comments from a strictly hardware perspective, I don't believe they should be the final word in what is "better". A faster processor does not mean that the phone is more pleasurable to use. Take Engadget's take on the matter, where the reviewer prefers the Droid over the Nexus One simply because of the keyboard. You can't dismiss other devices just because one has a OMFGBBQ AMOLED screen and another doesn't.
Feature implementation, ease of use, available software, and personal preference should determine which phone is "better".
I get feeling that people tryin to be trendy or if r uninfirmed will be only few to drop $600 on this. Sad but true.
Question for iphonehaters n bandwagoners only.
If this nexus plastic is almost twice as fast as $49 iPhone. Then y is it that it will not outsell iPhone in USA ??I mean it is receiving quite a bit of hype n free publicity. Can anyone answer that ?better specs all across the board. TheN y won't it kill n outsell iPhone ??only haters respond please. I have a theory n I want to prove it. Has to do do fanboyism.
@logic thinker
"I have a theory n I want to prove it. Has to do do fanboyism. "
Have you recently looked in the mirror?
And why do you have to quadruple post?
Not shipping to Australia.... Google fail!!!! :(
@level67
US, UK, HK, and Singapore for now.
@level67
i agree. i would have bought one already. i'm from the philippines. :( might have to consider taking a vacation in singapore just to get one lol.
i jumped the gun because i didnt wanna wait three months for it to show up on verizon.
Seems to be alright.
Can someone please explain to me what the heck is up with the absurd T-Mobile plan requirement to get this phone?
so what about the hundred dollar rebate? where is it?
@pachi72
Oh give it a rest. Everything pointed to a announcement for this thing on T-Mobile, the big surprise here is the plans they announced with Verizon and other carriers.
I have to say that it's looking like AT&T doesn't really want to participate in Google's smart phone (or should I say "super-phone") shenanigans.
Since google is just merchandising this phone, is there any chance of Nexus one getting the HTC Sense UI?
hey. heres an awsome idea for those who want to keep their plan on tmobile and have upgrades available for their family plan. use your upgrade to buy a different phone (ie blackberry bold) then sell it on ebay for full price. then you get the nexus one at a discount and keep your plan. I actually did just that today. phones sold on ebay already. paid $200 they sold for $450 each. I can deal with paying $280 for a brand new nexus one.
looking at specs no 1700 freq for UMTS. So is it only partially compatible with the t-mobile 3G network? am I missing something here?
Why the hell can I buy a whole netbook for like half the price of a damned phone?
It's only been less then a day since it's start up, but google's store has already demonstrated what it's focused on: isolating carriers from the transaction, as strange as it may sound. While carriers seem to benefit from this new setup, they may not be completely at ease considering there is potential for miscues which could result in a poor customer experience.
The carrier, in this case, our beloved TMO doesn't have (or maybe, doesn't get?) to carry the inventory, less cost. Doesn't have to train the staff for the device, also less cost. But less cost, in this case also means less input.
From google's and HTC's perspective, the benefit is a higher profit per unit sold by direct distribution from the warehouse, to the customer. Also, by taking over the process, they have eliminated all additional discounts that could have applied to the phone. Corporate discounts, loyalty plan discounts and even the employee discounts, none apply any longer.
This situation reminds of my past job: My manager used to yell at my supervisor. Soon after that my supervisor would yell at us.
TMO didn't have a say in the sale process? But the sudden change in full discount restrictions, and a "1 plan only" arm twisting? That wasn't TMO before, is it the new TMO? I blame both parties involved. A week ago, I read an article about TMO wanting to break away from the "budget carrier" image. I couldn't find it again but I could swear I saw a link to it today at the xda forums.
As much as I like you TMO, it's time for a reality check. You are the budget carrier because you have been lagging behind competition, badly and for a long time. You want to play like others? Fine, TMO customers want you to be a major player in the market. But please get there first, with coverage and good phones.
Oh hey,HTC, how are you? Up until yesterday you were pushing creaking battery covers and uneven displays. What's new?
Google was itching to do this and today during the presentation they insisted that they will keep doing it. Twice already have they teased with putting their name on a phone and now they did, but they couldn't have gone worse than it did.
If you want to scare Andy Rubin, just say 2 words: Multi touch. That sheepish squirming around, eye contact avoiding excuse of a "no comment" you pulled off today during the Q&A section of the presentation? It doesn't fit your aggressive stance on the market, buddy. I'm not a jerk but you have to handle that much, much better. Look at the Motorola CEO, handled his questions.
What goes from now on? Will we ever get to see a HTC handset in a store? Maybe only unsubsidized ones?
CDMA version of the Nexus One is less than 3 moths away. Will Verizon want to play this game? Could their be enough incentive for carriers to stick with Google's sale model? It will be interesting to see what options Verizon customers will given, compared to us?
TMO customers were given the poorest selection of Android phones. As soon as a decent phone was presented, the rules have been changed. This arm twisting may work with the PDA crowd, we endure abuse for some reason. But TMO better not alienate the free flip phone crowd, Sprint is right around the corner.
This is not an emo outburst because I didn't get my full discount. I will get this phone. I wish this turns out completely different and I have to eat my words. I'll get it unlocked, and even if I could miraculously get the full disco tomorrow, it would have still not been the party it could have been. Am I the only one under the impression that the not so distant future, US citizens we'll have to fight the tough times with unlocked phones that work an all GSM & CDMA frequencies?
Again, I hope I'm just overreacting but after 4 years of a steady ride, I notice a change in tempo.
so if i buy this phone, (i live in canada) i can only use it on its edge network? (rogers)
i also read that rogers is going to upgrade to HSDPA,
does this mean when this upgrade happens i will be able to use the phone on it? or will it forever be stuck on EDGE?
I formally Rename it to
