Nexus One hitting France at €450 contract-free?
Maybe you, like us, are a little disappointed at how the Nexus One fared in our review. It may not be the ground-breaker we'd all hoped for, but it's still a mighty important handset, and while we're expecting to know the full details for its American release later today it seems someone may have tipped their hat on European availability details a little early. According to Le Point, the phone will be available in France and elsewhere in Europe within the next "several weeks," with prices at €450 for a contract-free device. However, if you don't mind signing two years of your wireless independence away to Vodafone that price is said to drop to €200. Again, we're still waiting to learn about pricing here in the States, but we'd expect a similar ratio here.
[Thanks, Lopez]

No, don't think so... They do it the Apple way, but you can folow the conference on several live blogs ;)

Don't suppose anyone has a password for this?
Just a slight correction : the article says the phone will be carried by Vodaphone. In fact, it will be SFR (which belongs to Vodaphone anyways).
My guess for a UK price - £119.99 with a 18 months contract at £35 a month, dropping to £99.99 in a month with the same contract.
so the nexus wasnt that impressive, engadget? cant wait to see what you say about the new iphone later in the year. am sure it'll meet all your expectations. there's just no pleasing iFanboys
The price isn't bad as the iPhone 3GS 32GB costs around 700€ in France. (BTW: The iPhone 3G(!) 8GB costs 449€ in Germany)
Plus the HTC Hero already outsold the iPhone on a 3:1 basis across Europe so I guess the Nexus will be a winner too. Might be a different story in the US of course.
@ArticiaS I'd be very interested where you got the figures saying the Hero outsold the iPhone 3:1....
Also, it is no use paying Vodafone in France because it doesn't operate here (it may own a few SFR shares but it is not at all the same thing).
I think its expensive. I was planning on buying one but I only paid £280 for my 3GS Sim Free on O2 UK. Don't think I would be prepared to pay £300 - 400.
@TechCrunch
Where did you get that price from? It's £449 on O2 pay as you go...you're saying they took the SIM (which they would normally give to you for free) out and then knocked £169 off the price?
My guess for a China price? 3400 RMB (or CYN as you like it). In Europe (esp. the UK) seems when buying a phone sim-free have to pay through the roof!! What's with that? At least the US prices are a bit more reasonable (though granted seems most people over there are on contracts). Here in China, the majority of people buy sim-free phones (either legitimately sold here or "imported"). No idea how this one will work out here, though it'll probably carry the Dopod (多普达)branding instead of HTC.
Oui un peu decu quand meme... yes a little dissapointed in fact... the first prices we could expect was 375€... but that's true as ArticiaS posted it, next to an iphone or a pre (by import) it's coherent... Well now we know the price... Pre or Nexus...???
@sebadoh76
Tout à fait... Indeed
$530 = 367€ =/ so 450€ is expensive compared to US price
@Playa93 Et le VAT?
@Gwydion
J'ai oublié, j'ai calculé la tantôt. 21% et en effet, ça revient bien à 450€... Je suis déjà content qu'ils font la conversion chez Google, pas comme chez Apple ou Sony...
To be precise the article said that phone will be sold for LESS THAN 200€.
So it can be 199€ or maybe SFR (44% owned by Vodafone) and google are still negotiating and only got a bullpark number at the moment.
Anyway, it’s before the end of the quarter, it might take up to three month until we see it in France.
My two cents of euro.
By the way dear Engadget... why there is no Engadget App onto the Android Market ? Don't you like Android ? Do you only like "Buzz" ? LOL.
I think here in France, Carreers seem to be unable to talk about Android... i don't know how a french common user can turn to Android if he is not a "geek"... not bad advertising... no real advertising at all (like Iphone i.e.)... :-(
Maybe google will succeed a try ! i hope !
Of course we-re disappointed because you and all the others of your ilk over-sell anything new. Take the Droid, for example: it has an AWFUL keyboard and the software is no significant improvement over 1.6. And it needs a hard phone-off key--that IS "a biggie" if the screen doesn't light up instantly when you want to cut off a call. I took Croid back to Verizon and now have a Mytouch 3G with TMo and no contract. Mytouch is no Droid but then again, neither is the Droid. It's good enough for awhile though, and a lot cheaper.
All these phones do point out that Android is still pretty lame: it needs a good browser, for one thing.
smfh @ engadget. "disappointed"
lmao. your review sucks.f*ck your review.
seriously. you should remove that sh*t as a feature story
and have someone else write a proper review. or better yet,
just interview someone who actually worked on the Nexus One
Just an example:
PS3 in Europe: 299 Euro
PS3 in US: 299 Dollar
I wouldn't be surprised if that means that it will also be 450 Dollar!
But as much as I was rooting for this phone, the mixed reviews first on the Pre, then the Milestone and now the Nexus are making me wait yet again what apple has in store for us this year.......
@Maschkenator
No because the Europian price is based on the US price ;)
US will likely be contract-free since T-Mobile rolls that way now, and likely why Google picked them. It also, however, limits the market a lot, since high-end smartphone users want the network of Verizon or AT&T.
Just to be clear :
450euros = 640 USD
This isn't any cheaper that what you get in the USA it's much more expensive actually.
And since the U.S. is not yet a third-world country you would expect those kinda wares to be about the same price in europe and in the US.
Stop comparing euros and dollars, it's not the same right now....
@Flix C No, it's 450 € including 21% VAT
So the european version will work with 800/900/1200 3g band?
@kenDOES
Fucking idiot, chinees also eat frogs, so what's ur point.freaking stuffed turkey eater.
@D0gtag
Er zijn toch wel domme mensen in deze wereld hé ?
Let me put this straight lol
US price is rumored to be $530 so, 367€
but here we have a thing called VAT, that means that we have to pay 21% taxes and 21% of 367 is about 77€ so 367 + 77 = 450€
;)
My HD2 cost me 170€ instead of 600 (1yr contract), so i don't think a 450€ contract free will be more than 100€ with one.
Also, don't forget price in France are VAT included (20%), so 375€ = $540 without tax
@kenDOES And Spanish also eat frog.
No, si no eres más ignorante porque no puedes.
Em pots menjar el melindro, gamarús
i hope that it hits finland with contract so i could get it.
