Nexus One previewed with Flash 10.1 beta: careful what you wish for (video)

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Apple announced Tuesday that more than 3 billion applications had been downloaded for the iPhone and iPod touch. For a store that has been around for only 18 months, that's a lot of apps.
sweet now we can all play FARMVILLE from our phones! that's like super F^^^^^g AWESOME!!!...... Back to reality click to flash would be cool and a great idea. other than that its a waste of battery and resources. and yes that first sentence was filled with sarcasm and what everyone who owns an iPhone is really thinking right now... No really just sarcasm.
Seriously, I'm getting very tired of Engadget's pro-Apple stance. If Flash first got demoed on an iCrap you'd call it the best thing since bread and butter.
"... so called superphone" - compared to anything Apple offers it is pretty super.
I have only set up this account to simply let the engadget team know, this is my official choice for not reading engadget further. This bias towards Apple's iAnything has just gone too far, we, as readers, don't want to hear a constant jilted and sarcastic opinion. It should be a fair and un-tipped opinion on the actual hardware. Every time I see anything about a new phone, I only hear how it compares to an iPhone, and that is all well in fine to compare in terms of features and speed. But, if someone is reviewing anything other than an iPhone, a constant smartass and sarcastic tone is always present. Just like the review from the other day, on browser speed comparison between the Droid, Nexus One, and iPhone on an iPhone optimized page. Funny how in the ACID browser tests how many errors can be seen on Engadget. Try loading up other sites and comparing, try having a reviewer that doesn't make sarcastic tones and smartass remarks.
The title to this article actually made me anticipate a slow and buggy performance, and yet I was greeted with a game that ran well, and video that was smooth. But of course you can manage to throw in the patented Engadget's Apple iSarcasm (r) in the mix and whore out Apple a little bit more.
I understand that I am just one reader, and me refusing to read any further will impact just about nothing, but reading the comments above me I can see you have angered quite a few people, it's time to reevaluate your staff and get an objective point of view.
@MrSherlock I absolutely agree. I'm going elsewhere for my unbiased gadget news. Every time Topolsky opens his gaping maw, apple adoration spews out of his unshaven mug. Very tiresome. We get it! Apple's in bed with Engadget. Apple's in bed with the stupid ex-saturday night live 'comedian' turned talk show host, when the 'nerd guy' is on..
Just listen to a few podcasts and you'll easily see the light that all apple products are painted in on this 'unbiased' review site.
Total payola. If this were a top 40's radio station, they'd be yelling about how great the latest lady ga ga song was..
It's a nice phone. So what actually IS wrong with T-Mobile? I have had Sprint for about 7 years or so and it does OK. Where I live in north Dallas, my mobilespeedtest speed only shows 7k, even slower than dial-up. But it is faster in other parts of town.
I need a new phone and will probably go for a touchscreen, no matter what the provider. I like the Sprint prices, but when I look at the T-Mo coverage map, it seems to have coverage every place i go on the interstates and where i might move later. My main requirement is 3Favs or Pick3 or whatever it is called, but only Sprint and T-mo have that. Verizon costs more than I want to pay. So is TMobile really as bad as everyone jokes about???
lol, i said some pretty mean things about the writer of that review yesterday. at that point it had not dawned on me the reason the iphone loaded engadet is because of flash. we all know the flash on this site is screwed up to no end ever since the update.
so, not only is that guy a lousy reviewer he is a total fucking moron idiot.
Hulu!! when can i get this
Tegra 2 will handle Flash 10 a million times better than Snapdragon.
And I'm really sick of Engadget's sarcastic comments on anything which is not on the iPhone.
National Geographic does have a mobile site and the videos on it work fine on the iPhone. It is, however, simpler, and completely free of video advertisements, so flash fans might not like that.
I know it's a work-in-progress, but the general lag when scrolling looks annoying.
I knew this would happen soon. The corporate IT/Tech/Software houses that control information on the net in one way or the other would make devices that are simply hardware portals. How long before media co's make tv's that are loaded with widgets that drive revenue to their hands.
It'll be nice to have Flash on there, just in case I *need* to have it for something sometime, but to be honest I don't see myself using it very often -- if ever.
Most of the websites I visit don't even have flash content. How can that be, you ask? Well, I mostly visit mobile sites when using my mobile browser.
Maybe I'm showing my age here. The Android browser is the best one I've seen on a mobile phone, but even with it I *hate* visiting sites that are designed for a desktop computer. I'd really rather have my information ready to go on a site designed for a small screen rather than have to scroll up and down and sideways through it looking to see where something is. Throw in Flash to slow that down, and call me unimpressed.
Who knows? Maybe I'm the only one that feels this way? I can't believe that I am, though.
For god's sake engadget please stop this childish approach towards anything not an iPhone.
This is lame, the open screen project announced this would be FINAL a few months ago, yet its still beta, and there are no previews for symbian or windows mobile. Get it together.
Is there some site that shits on apple the way engadget shits on anything that isn't apple? I think that's the site i'd rather read
@Joppa sure, i read phandroid and androidcentral. although i'm not so sure they shit all over apple..
@Joppa
So you hate Engadget because they found, after actually USING the Nexus (which you haven't done) that it wasn't some super uber godphone like you thought it was going to be, so that means that Engadget is obviously biased towards Apple?
How stupid are you?
@Jack
Did not say a damn thing about the Nexus One. If you could read you would see that I am sick of engadget shitting on anything that isn't apple, much like you do in every one of your brainless fucking posts.
What's your point exactly? You think i should keep reading this bullshit site, even though it's completley biased garbage? I guess you'll miss me or something. I sure won't miss dumbfucks like you.
i am using ubuntu to listen to this podcast i feel insulted sirs
Flash+Verizon, that will make me switch from iPhone to Nexus One.
yes, the game will run better as a native app, but there are tons of contents which is not available as apps, for example, the super popular Chinese web based game Happy Farm, also, Xtube.com
@All of you
its funny, engadget make a simple post regarding the potential for flash and all of you start crying about whats better iphone or nexus one, fanboyism at it's best.. both the iphone and nexus one are equally capable of providing an awesome user experience for your whatever your lifestyle is..
Appreciate it for what it is and how it opens the door for new possibilities of interaction, stop hating and grow up. kids..
ha
How do you sociopaths not realize that when the writer said "be careful what you wish for" he was referring to content being demoed? An awful net game and some irritating advertisements.
Really? "on this so-called superphone"?!?!?!?!?!?! Ummm...which other cell phones have 1Ghz procs? Anyone?
I think that makes the Nexus One pretty god-damned "super"...
And as far as flash support, it's about a seamless desktop to phone experience. Until HTML 5 becomes the animation standard that flash has become, supporting flash is a somewhat necessary evil.
Oh wow - look at all those great ads that i have been missing! That game review was a total fail as well.
Lets talk flash video...
I'm SOLD!
Only a matter of time before Apple goes begging to Adobe to enable Flash on their iPhone... being a good sport, Adobe will already have an App/plugin for that!
BTT, I going to the Nexus One ASAP!
While I also hate "Flash ads", many people are not separating the technology from its (mis)use. It's pretty obvious that Flash is chosen by advertisers to deliver their rich (cough) ad-content because, at the moment, it is the best way to do so. Yet most mobile browsers have pretty good support for HTML5 already, and once that same rich content can be delivered natively using the HTML5 Canvas tag, isn't it likely that advertisers will simply switch from reliance upon using a third-party plugin, to using Canvas instead? (...and will that be as easy to block?)
Flash gets a hard time from some, but it has been enabling people to deliver video and other rich content for over 10 years, whereas HTML5 is only now allowing people to deliver that same type of content. I understand many of the arguments about ownership, but not hating Flash just because some people/companies abuse it or don't know how to code properly.
Flash on Mac can be an annoying experience at times, but I understand that has much to do with Apple refusing to open up their API or work with Adobe in any way. On Windows I've rarely had a bad experience, and I use it daily because I develop for the platform. Like many I would like the choice to have Flash on my mobile (currently an iPhone), but also have the ability to turn it off or block it when I choose.
Engadget is pathetic.
Rigging a browser test now negative spinning flash ?
What a bunch of hypocrites.
For those numbnuts who still dont get it.
1.Flash is about the easiest thing to turn off on a website. Mobile Browsers ALREADY DO IT!!! Wont be any different just a feature you can turn ON and OFF. You know "options" ??
2. This isnt about "whats out now" you tools. Its about what flash can offer. Flash is a resource hog because whats out there is content designed for broadband/big screens/and multi core processors. Once Flash hits the mobile market youre looking at a massive breakthrough in mobile content.
Movie trailers
Music Videos
News clips
Porn clips
Games
All designed and optimized for *mobile only* experiences.
You no longer have to wait for a Hulu "app" ,Yahoo music "app" ,or a Bejewed 5 in 3d "App"...
Youll simply go to there URL and pick your show or video and bam have similar experience as you do on the desktop.
Engadget would shit there pants and non stop hype this if it was coming to iphone. Any techy with half a clue would. Instead they "warn" us ?? pathetic.
