Dell Mini 3 headed to AT&T running Android
We've already seen it in China and Brazil, now Dell's first modern smartphone -- the Mini 3 -- is headed to the US in the loving arms of AT&T 3G. We expect the specs to remain pretty much the same: 3.5-inch 640x360 display, Bluetooth, 3 megapixel auto-focus camera with flash, microSD, and GPS, though we'll have to wait to get that confirmed. And from the looks of that pic of a prototype supplied by Direct2Dell, this Android handset will be custom skinned for AT&T. Look for it to hit sometime in the first half of 2010. Bonus pic after the break.

Is this a WM phone?
@r19578 android
@r19578 Android...
@r19578
Read the heading!
@(Unverified) Thanks, I was thinking 'dell-windows, windows-dell...', good for dell they didn't stuck in windows.
@r19578
Is this a Dell phone?
@feepness I don't care who makes it, I just want to know what network it will be coming out on.
The Nexus One eats this phone for breakfast... Better be cheaper than $179 in contract...
But knowing AT&T, they'll take advantage of the uninformed consumer.
@Wiizer:
I agree, put next to most new smart phones, this thing is butt ugly.
Question is, who cares? It's huge, it's fugly, it's boring.
I like a lot of Dell laptops, but this is unnecessary.
@NewL
Oh man you hit it spot on!
+1
@NewL
it looks fine
dell makes lots of good products, and lots of bad ones.
Why would anyone get this instead of the iPhone?
Of course a Droid or Nexus One would be a saner choice, but if you're already stuck with AT&T, why not get an iPhone?
@ImSpartacus
Cause we're starting an iRevolution.
@ImSpartacus
Android is FAR more customizable than the iPhone.
The iPhone has its strong suits, and is a great phone in its own right, but having the first gen, and playing with the 3G for extended periods, I'd much rather almost any other smartphone OS.
I like the idea of the iPhone, but there were too many nagging things with it.
Either way, regardless of whether the iPhone is "better" or not, choice is ALWAYS good. AT&T doesn't have enough "consumer" smartphones. BB is business oriented, and WM has a learning curve (though of my current AT&T options, I'll take WM any day). Putting Android in the running will force Apple to step their game up with the iPhone, and that way everyone wins.
@ImSpartacus
because Dell will no doubt be able to bundle this as a sweetener with a PC package. Ticking a tickbox for a heavily discounted Android smartphone with your PC could well be a very tempting proposition for someone in the market.
This phone should be free Unlocked.
Dell phone? yawn... why are they even bothering?
@HighestRanked
Because not everyone is an Apple fanboy.
@Dafrety You don't have to be an Apple fanboy to know that the iPhone knocks this little Dell out of the park.
That is, if you're stuck on AT&T...
@Dafrety I have nothing against Android, I like the platform. All I'm saying is why is Dell even bothering, there's no point. They don't know how to make consumer products and their 1st attempt at producing this phone was so horribly done that manufacturers and carriers alike told them to go back to the drawing board. This is going to be the red-headed step child of the Android family.
@ImSpartacus Really? You can say that without having ever seen or touched it? Or read a review of it? I guess when your only decision point is weather or not it has an apple logo on it that makes perfect sense.
Too little too late.
Dell sucks, it'll have a crappy warranty, outsourced tech support, and its already way behind other phones in comparison to specs. Yuck!
It's too late for Dell. They waited too long to release an Android phone, and now are in competition with Droid and Nexus One. Unless this is a $99 device it just cant compete with either of those two.
@fatslug see what I mean? even the fatslug agrees.
@fatslug
oh come on... What do you mean? How is it that it won't compete
with thoes phones if they are all using the android system? Haven't you realized that it's the same dog gone thing in a different case??
@Son0fsocal Android is not magic pixy dust, Dell still has to take care of making sure the hardware works well and plays nice with the OS, plus a whlole bunch of other issues. If their track record with MP3 players is a sign, they've proven to be totally incompetent in building consumer electronics.
They should really just buy Palm. Not sure how many would pick a Dell branded Android over HTC or Moto?
this phone is already outdated before its released
@Yaoooo84
don't you have anything better to say than this ignorant statement
you just made based on NOTHING..:((
@Son0fsocal
based on nothing????
3.5-inch 640x360 display, Bluetooth, 3 megapixel auto-focus camera with flash, microSD, and GPS
What part of that is new and cutting edge?? 3.7 inch screen is pretty much a must now. 640X360? come on... 3 megapixel camera...wow
yea I based it on nothing.
@Yaoooo84
:)
@Yaoooo84
My underwear is moist, and not because of those scepcs!
eww..
Am I the only one who thinks this is the best looking android phone yet?
@kopmis
yup
@kopmis
I think it's pretty good-looking. I just wish there was more screen and less bezel.
@kopmis I think you might be...
@kopmis I think most android phones look to flashy and techy, like they are trying to convince you how advanced the phone is just by the looks of it. This on the other hand looks like a merge between the iPhone and the Pre, the best looking smartphones on the market imo. It looks fluid and natural.
@kopmis:
It looks like a turd sliver that happened to slip out after a struggle of trying.
@Jordan ha! ha. ha. real mature.
Am I the only one here who's excited??? If I can buy this phone unlocked and on pay as you go for just over half the price of Nexus One, then I'm excited.
iPhones are too expensive and it's the same story with Nexus One. I hope this is my affordable choice.
It's pretty, but looks like a HUGE fingerprint magnet...
Cue in the Nexus One fanboys bashing this phone, even though it's also an Android phone.
@pika2000
LOL
The problem isn't so much that its ugly or not, but that the hardware is something you might expect from a first generation android device. Not only would I never buy a dell phone, I sure as hell wouldn't spend money on this device with other options coming to the market in the same time frame. Even if they cost more.
oh yeah!!! AT&T didnt want to mess with crummy htc and such< so what do they do???? they get the big gun! DELL!! that phone is gonna rock!!
@Son0fsocal
Dell is hardly "the big gun" and no, I do not hate Dell, I'm typing from a Dell laptop right now. But, an HTC phone would eat this with a side of Samsung for breakfast.
@Son0fsocal Yea, HTC is so crummy that AT&T is releasing TWO HTC android phones this year....
@barry99705
Well yeah.. If u walk into AT&T you see that blackberrys and iPhones
are the main focus, while htc are the dirty basterds bunched up
with the rest of their crappy phones you get for free..
