HTC HD2 officially headed to T-Mobile
We had a pretty clear indication that this one was coming, but Microsoft and HTC have now finally announced that the HD2 Windows Mobile phone is officially headed to T-Mobile. Unfortunately, no one is being very specific about launch details just yet, but it will apparently be out sometime this Spring for a still to be determined price.

I shat bricks when I saw this on my Twitter.
@Lucas I think a lot of people had the same reaction in horror and disbelief at hearing that this phone was bundled with WinMo instead of Android.
@Lucas
I shat bricks too! My Nexus One is going back tomorrow, sorry Google!
@Lucas
As someone who is typing this on a HD2 right now I can say that you're in for a treat ;)
however be warned that there are some bugs mostly small but the worst one being the random inability to send SMS messages without turning it in and off. Check out CDs developers for more info. Hopefully htc will have ironed out the bugs by then, then this phone will truly make a grown man weep. I can play tekken 3 with a Bluetooth gamepad on it for crying out loud!
*sorry, that should read 'XDA Developers'
@HighestRanked Quite the critical man, no?
@Esat Dedezade This does seem like the only touchscreen-only devices can use, my thumbs are too big for most screens, but unfortunately, I'm only 16, and am on my mom's T-mobile plan with a Gravity 2. Also, when my contract ends when I'm 18, I'm going back on Virgin Mobile if I can't find a job job, and I'm switcvhing to Sprint. They have much better service in my area. Or I should just stay with T-mobile... My school recently switched to T-mobile for the administrator's phones, many Blackberry Flips, a few Dash 3G's, and I enviously looked at the TouchPro 2 destined for our principal...
ATT is getting no love. Nokia's n900 and all the androids.
I wonder why ATT...?
And yes the N900 is not subs by Tmo, I'm talking about the 3G
@tehslax Because AT&T didn't pay up. Thats how that stuff works. Also seems like T-mobile has some kind of 'more than just business' thing going on....
@tehslax
What are you talking about? AT&T is getting almost everything http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/atandt-finally-goes-android-confirms-dell-htc-and-motorola-on-bo/
@Eduardo - yep ATT is getting 5 android devices along from HTC, Dell and Moto.
AND they are getting HUEVOS... I mean webOS as well. They said it yestersay.
What a fail of a carrier choice.
@Peter F
How is this oblivionated? Dude, Peter I'm with you buddy. TO THE DEATH!
@TonyMontana2367 Sorry fellas but I have T-Mobile, live in Chicago and have beautiful coverage.
HTC was silly to commit this beautiful device to WM when its fully capable of running Android.
@Why should I have all the fun Agreed. This form factor with Android goodness would be most delectable.
@Why should I have all the fun
+1 I totally agree I like the nexus one but it looks so much like my Sprint Hero, but the HD2 it doesn't look like too many other HTC phones and I think it would kick so much ass with 2.1 on it now if there was only a way to get it to run Android natively completely doing away with WM
@Why should I have all the fun
Dont worry, guys at androidonhtc.com are working on a Android port......not yet there, but if all goes well...... you'd have a 1Ghz dual boot phone. that's one of the luxuries of a non Apple product.
the day that happens, i am officially showing my middle finger to Steve Jobs.....fuck that, i'll do it right now. ‹^› ‹(•¿•)› ‹^›
@thegreatskywalker - Sonys snapdrago will have a 4 or 4.1 screen. I wonder if android supports 4.3 at the resolution. I dont see why it would be an issue. You have to understand.. google designed the N1 with HTC.. HTC can release whatever they want.. and who knows.. maybe they will make and release something like this size with Andy. (android)
blah spring
Awesome! TP2's getting swapped out on launch day.
Now where's WM7, to give the HD2 the software it deserves?...
@amb9800 I have a T-Mobile Touch Pro2 too. I will be getting the HD2, but will be giving that or the TP2 to my girlfriend who is using a G1 on my other phone line.
Does not get any better than that. Will have the both the TP2 and HD2 to make my choice, depending on which one I like.
But that will mean no more Android. I was thinking about the Nexus, but I like the HD2 far better.
I am as excited about the HD2 as I was with the TP2.
And cool thing is that I bought the TP2 on a one year contract, so if this does not debut until August I can get it at a discount, but I'll pay full price if necessary. (I sell my used phones on eBay after about a year and get almost what I paid for them or $100 less. So it does not really matter what I pay, unless I don't have the disposable cash at the time.)
@amb9800 The HD2 hardware deserves Android and norhing else
@HighestRanked Not a big Android fan-- I think the iPhone OS is better in terms of UI consistency/smoothness, broad and rapidly-updated API capabilities, etc., and WM provides more functionality. Android's somewhere in between, with its only real "killer app" being Google's own apps, the vast majority of which are available on other platforms too (even if not as tightly integrated).
Android doesn't do desktop syncing, which kills it for me (and Google's Outlook plugin to sync to Google Calendar, which then syncs OTA with Android, is not reliable/consistent enough to compete with local syncing via WMDC (for WM) or iTunes (for iPhone), primarily because of differences in how Google Calendar formats PIM data (leading to sync issues)).
In any case, the HD2 is going to be able to run WM7 when it ships, either by official upgrade or XDA-Devs. Also, HTC's phones scheduled for later this year are all slower than the HD2, with the focus being on increased battery life (via the smaller-process Snapdragon revision).
So overall, not a bad phone in terms of short-term future prospects either-- use it with WM6.5.3/Sense today and then upgrade to WM7 in the summer.
@MichaelSF Yep, HD2 should be awesome, and also a solid idea in terms of WM7 upgradability (which is not the case for MSM72xx devices like the TP2).
I bought my TP2 a week or so after launch for $149 on a 2-year contract. They're selling for over $300 on eBay at the moment, so right now I could make a profit (/recoup enough to cover the additional cost for the HD2 if I don't get a subsidy) though I'm sure prices will drop like a rock when the HD2 hits...
wow, this is a monster of a phone.
I'm really glad it's coming to T-Mobile.
Only thing that scares me is:
1. They won't have full exclusivity
2. I'm scared to see the pricing of this thing
otherwise this is some really awesome news
@elithegreat I think the pricing will be fine.
Arguably, anything with a keyboard is more expensive to make. My T-Mobile Touch Pro2 by HTC has a keyboard and it is now priced at $450 and was $550 when it debuted in August 09.
So I suspect this, without a keyboard, will be about $450 retail and $300 subsidized. And if they compete with the Nexus, by that time it may even go for less, assuming the N1 is down to $400 or so.
Sidenote: In the old days I would say that since it has a larger display, that would drive the cost up, especially this one with a 4.3" display. But TFT displays cost very little nowadays. So that helps us siginificantly.
@elithegreat
in response to my old comment
I read over at tmonews that T-Mobile will in fact carry the device exclusively. That makes me really happy!
Wait what? I walked into a T-Mobile store about a month ago and saw this with pricing and everything.
@Dan H
Would you care to enlighten us?
@Dan H
USA
@jaalin
well that narrows it down...
@Dan H
I thinks not...
Still one of the sexiest phones out there.
@XChrisX
Possibly the only phone better looking than an iphone.
The Nexus One AND the HD2? T-Mobile is hitting the gold mine this year so far for phones.
@Wes Steele
Yes T-mobile is getting a lot of great phones, I'm glad they are it's about time. This makes up for all the years of horrible flip phones
@(Unverified) Notice that both of these phones are HTC
@Wes Steele If you read about thier 'project black' or whatever it was called, they basically are trying to become a substantial player in the smartphone market. That means a Lotttalottalotalotaaalotttttttaaaaaaa smartphones. And from what a little bird told me, even more to come... :):):)
@Wes Steele Let's not forget the Sony Xperia X10 1gz Snapdragon with Android coming soon to T-mobile as well....
@Wes Steele Hitting the HD2 is like hitting a land mine: all hurt.
It'd be a different story if it came with Android.
Yes this is part of the competition for the N1 I was talking about.....Of course that crappy WM6.5 is inside but hey Xda devs might just be able to make this thing play nice with android
@Vision77 : WinMo 6.5 is NOT crap. Obviously you haven't used it, or at least not to it's fullest potential.
@Quikboy I have used various incarnations of Windows Mobile 6.5 via Xda Devs on my HTC tytn....It is an improvement somewhat over winmo 6 but in comparison to Android no contest....I could survive comfortably with a winmo 6.5 device(with a few tweaks via xda)But with WinMo its the lack of innovation and stagnant mobile OS development cycle which pushes me toward android....I have waited patiently for a few years now for WinMo7....Whats even more aggravating is to see the company behind one of the most well known and most used mobile operating systems not innovate and not raise the bar......Oh and I own a Tre 650(I wish I had a GSM Pre),At&t 8125 Htc Tytn, G1 and Iphone....All of which have been tweaked hacked or modded to no end...So I definitely know the potential of any device I buy or plan to buy......With all of that said I'm still rooting for winmo because now they are the underdog still have the potential put out a great os...with the way Google and Tmo are dinkin folks around with the N1, I might just end up with that HD2.
the even bigger and better news will be when android is ported to it
@iams Why not just get the nexus one? The only difference i really see is the OS. They even run the same Qualcomm Snapdragon Processor..
@ThePengwin how about the bigger screen the tiny bezel the only thing that I can see that would make it a little bit of a pain to use as an Android device and thats the lack of a trackball/pad or something of the like to handle small text on webpages such
@iams Yes. Both phones are pretty much the same. Except the OS. If you're a WinMo like I am, the HD2 is the one. But if you want the best of the best right now, which i might consider, then N1 is the one.
@Mjguira
How do you guys not see the biggest difference is the 4.3 inch screen??? Have you seen a side to side comparison between the HD2 and NEXUS??? HD2 basically puts the N1 to shame and makes it a completely irrelevant product. Android or not, HD2 is the sexiest phone on the market at this time period.
