Nokia 'Mystic' leaked, collides E72 heritage with Centro-esque design
Here's a bit of confusion for the eyes: a new Nokia hand has surfaced at the Vietnamese tech site iTech.vn which marries the traditional E-series candybar form factor with a big dash of Palm Centro-style face buttons. There aren't many details so far, other than the 5 megapixel camera around back and the spooky fact that the phone is temporarily going by the "Mystic" moniker. While that legendary keyboard looks delicious as ever, we can't say we're digging much of the rest of this handset's looks -- or lack of expanded functionality implied in the form factor -- but we'll reserve judgement for when we know more and get a chance to play with this in person.

pretty.ugly
@Lectronsect - Jesus.. who the hell signs off on these designs, right?
@POZ not just "pretty" ugly
@Lectronsect
Por Que!!!!!!!!!!!!?????
@Lectronsect
It has a very generic look, kinda like Nexus One.
It's ugly by Nokia standards, perhaps, but not as ugly as you make it seem.
@Lectronsect The 1990's called Nokia! They want their cellphone back!!
Holy crap thats one ugly phone.
The E71 and E72 crys ugly emo tears...
@NeoXY
As an E71 owner, I'd concur.
eeee-yuck
fugly
Holy crap, no wonder Nokia is suing Apple for everything. That phone looks like something I made on the toilet a few hours ago. This is why Nokia is scared of Apple. Nokia has pure shit for designers.
Waaaaaay early April fools?
I was almost going to say "oh come on, Im sure its just an unflattering shot". then I looked at the rest of the pictures.
eeewww!
I didn't realize that phones were considered jewelry.
Who cares what it LOOKS like, all cell phones have essentially the same damn rectangular shape. At least this one has a physical keyboard in a compact bar-shape instead of just another annoying touchscreen.
@Hazdaz Since phones do mostly follow a pretty standardized form factor, the ascetics play a big role in actually use of the phone, as well as marketability.
There is a ratio for Function over Form, that I can't recall verbatim right now, but for phones, with a such a low expected output from them (making phone calls, and simple texted based functions) Ascetics are one of the MAIN factors that set phones apart (for the normal person who doesn't care about processing speed), and it has been PROVEN that people enjoy using simple products much more, when they have a pleasing aesthetic quality to them.
Your argument is null.
Hello 1999?
Is this seriously what Nokia is bringing in 2010? It looks like something from the previous decade.
@good grief
Just FYI, last decade was 6 days ago... so.... :-) Just picking!
@(Unverified)
That's the joke... get it?
@ctt1wbw
I agree that this is not the prettiest looking phone, but what does this have to do with Apple? When did Apple ever make a business-focused phone with a physical QWERTY?
For Nokia's Eseries devices, which is what this looks like, RIM's the main competitor, not Apple. And not every conversation is about X vs. Apple.
@JoeKay The iPhone has a keyboard. You are aware of this fact right? I can type on mine and everything.
@ctt1wbw
Reading is fundamental. Apparently comprehension is not.
@CMA I comprehend that he's saying that just because a cell phone doesn't have a physical keyboard, it is not intended for business use.
Looks KiRF-y IMO.
@Step666
Agreed. While most of Nokia's designs are pretty basic, I don't think they would take a step in this direction. Someone's playing a prank on iTech.vn.
ZZZzzzZZZzzz...
I see nokia are really stepping up their game in 2010 and are going to provide great alternatives to the Nexus One, iPhone and Droid...
Oh wait....Their Not...
It's a part of the Supernova series.. hence the design.
Here's the 7610 Supernova for comparison

Still ugly though.
Looks like the update to the E63, which is a damn fine phone. This might look good too if only they changed that crappy grey colour...
Looks like a cheap baby brother for the E72. This is Nokia's low cost B-list material here, not a flagship product.
Probably a hoax. The UI does not look like recent S60 UI. Or is this S40? Definitely not an Eseries phone anyway.
Weird but wouldn't plastic= E6x? If its an Eseries.
I won't go as far as to say the device is ugly, but I do think it has a pretty damn boring design. Nevertheless, the phone looks very, very functional. For one, the keyboard looks delightful. Also, looks like it's gonna be an inexpensive device and, coupled with Nokia's lauded building quality, it looks like an overall pretty solid device.
My eyes! My eyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!
Please.... add a new story FAST. I don't want this hideous "thing" waiting for me every time I refresh.
Who is Nokia's industrial designer? They should be fired immediately. The Zune at least copied the iPhone in an anti-thesis way that made sense and looked unique in it's own way. Also, why doesn't Nokia just buy Palm outright? Nokia may still produce a majority of worldwide cell phones in use, but really do they think BRIC citizens are too stupid or poor to desire an actual functioning OS?
"but we'll reserve judgement for when we know more and get a chance to play with this in person."
You might want to get a tetanus shot first...
Seems most people think it's ugly?
is this 2010????
If this turns out to have a 2.6" display which I've been waiting for since the dawn of time, I'm gonna be furious. It wouldn't be so bad if it were so plasticy looking, and what is with the home and email buttons and the d-pad?? If this is supposed to be a budget version of the E72, the older E63 looks better than this. Come on Nokia. Are you trying to make life harder for yourself?
@LessThanDug yeah pretty upset. the phone doesn't even have optical track-pad, just a cheap dpad. and the home + mail buttons are pretty lame. How the heck are we gonna go to Menu! (remember how nokia phones usually have a menu button?
@nqduy The home key takes the place of the menu key. Press it once, takes, it takes you to the menu, press it again and it takes you to the homescreen. Just like it was on the E71.
@LessThanDug oh, that explains it. well since e66, i never touched a E-series again.
as far as i know it's brand new and something nokia is working on. And yes it's running S60 just like E72. Anybody remember Samsung Jack or HTC Snap and their similarity towards BB and Palm? so yeah, shouldnt be surprised if this baby's coming out.
And them people wonder why Nokia is suing Apple....LOL no wonder Nokia has no imagination....
It really looks like shit. I have a hard time seeing this as a successor to E72, it's more propably either a low-cost sibling to E72 or a fake.
If it turns out to be a low cost E72-variant, I will be a little bit surprise as the E71 cheapo variant (can't remember the name) looked ok.
@triplea Nope, definitely not a fake, judging from the names of the Phonebook and the Browser application. It's either an early prototype of something, or a case of horrible design.
That's horrible. I mean, they do the E72 and then come out with that?
Ugh.
And they wonder why they're losing market share?!
Jeezden what were they thinking?! E series devices are some of the most elegant and slick looking devices around, this one's gotta be a new budget level device, maybe sub-e series?
