Sharp debuts 60-inch 240Hz Aquos LED LCD TV, 68-inch set with a touch of yellow in its RGB
Like the steady hand on your wristwatch, Sharp is arriving at CES with a handful of new television sets... so let's get on with the show! This year, the Aquos LED LCD TV series is touting an impressive 1.6-inch thin frame, Energy Start Version 4 compliancy, and "four primary color technology" -- in a nutshell, it's a "RGB-meet-Y for yellow" world. The LE920 flagship series comes in 52, 60, and 68-inch models with Aquomotion 240 and edge-lit LED; those are due in May with prices listed firmly as TBD. The LE820/810 series hits the slightly tinier, 60, 52, 46, and 40-inch screen size markets and boasts 120Hz frame rate conversion and 4ms response time. They're slightly more within your reach, debuting in March with prices ranging between $1,800 and $4,000. Looking for something even faster? Meet the 60-inch E88UN with a 240Hz refresh rate alongside a X-Gen panel -- mum's the word on pricing, but it'll be the first of these out, in February. Presser after the break.

SHARP® EXPANDS THE LCD COLOR GAMUT WITH A GROUNDBREAKING TECHNOLOGY IN THREE NEWLY DESIGNED AQUOS® LED LCD TV SERIES
Revolutionary four-primary-color technology enables more than one trillion colors
Three UltraBrilliant Edge-lit AQUOS LED LCD TV Series with sizes ranging from 40- (40" diagonal) to an industry-first 68-inch (68 1/32" diagonal) screen class
Newly developed dramatic, contemporary design sets the standard
Flagship LE920 Series offers AquoMotion 240 for clearer fast-moving video
AQUOS Net™ adds streaming video for enhanced home theater enjoyment
LAS VEGAS, January 6, 2010 – Sharp unveils three new AQUOS LED LCD TV series, breaking new ground in LCD technology and design. Premiering in the U.S. in early 2010, this next-generation set of UltraBrilliant Edge-lit AQUOS LED LCD TVs unveils a revolutionary technology, introducing never-before-seen colors to the TV industry. Unveiled by the company at the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Sharp's proprietary four-primary-color technology enables more than a trillion colors to be displayed for more sparkling golds, Caribbean blues and sunflower yellows.
"As a pioneer in the LCD industry, Sharp continues to advance the technology, introducing it's first LED-backlight LCD TV on the market less than two years ago and paving the way for larger screen sizes, thin designs and Internet connectivity," said Mikio Katayama, president and chief operating officer, Sharp Corporation. "We have changed the way an LCD TV produces an image with the new four-primary-color technology, allowing us to broaden the visual experience and immerse consumers in a new world of color."
Four Primary Color Technology
This four-primary-color display employs a four-color filter, for the first time in the industry, that adds the color Y (yellow) to the three colors of R (red), G (green), and B (blue). This combination expands the color gamut, faithfully rendering nearly all colors that can be discerned with the unaided human eye. Four-primary-color technology enables the display to reproduce colors that have been difficult to portray using conventional LCD displays, such as the golden yellow color of brass instruments.
When combined with Sharp's 1080p X-Gen LCD panel, which incorporates UV2A Technology, the displays offer dramatic reduction in energy consumption compared to conventional fluorescent-backlight LCD TVs.
Continuing Sharp's history of innovation and originality, the new AQUOS LEDs offer a stunning new contemporary design that pushes the envelope for flat-screen television artistry. At only 1.6-inches thin, the full-front panel glass (on the LE920 and LE820 series) extends to meet the slim border for a subtle edge that befits the elegance of a modern home theater.
These advanced AQUOS LED LCD TVs also include Sharp's newest version of AQUOS Net, which delivers streaming video with Netflix®. AQUOS Net gives users instant access to customized Web-based content as well as AQUOS Advantage Live real-time customer support. The new AQUOS LED LCD TV product lines are all compliant with Energy Star® Version 4.0 standards which become effective in May 2010 and are equipped with Sharp's OPC function that automatically adjusts the unit's brightness based on the lighting of the room.

Offering extreme flexibility, the LE920 Series includes a USB media player for digital video/music/photo enjoyment.

Offering additional large-screen AQUOS LED LCD TV options, the LE820 and LE810 Series are available in 60- (LC-60LE820UN and LC-60LE810UN), 52- (LC-52LE820UN and LC-52LE810UN), 46- (LC-46LE820UN and LC-46LE810UN) and 40-inch (LC-40LE820UN and LC-40LE810UN) screen class sizes (60 1/32", 52 1/32", 45 63/64" and 40" diagonals respectively). Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh niiiiccccccceeeeeeeeeeeeee..
I still prefer my 92" screen with my projector.
Waiting for 3d 1080p Projectors :)
another freakin' TV... this is bullcrap. Enough with the TV announcements today already!!
Yellow, eh? Very interesting...I'm curious to see one side by side with a standard RGB set to see how it compares. Good to see them innovating, though.
@ryaninc
True...
Well see whos tech will be best...
Now about those OLED tvs............
@ryaninc
If I didn't know better I'd say everyone would look like they came straight out of the Simpsons.
@Kyle Krcmaric - Well, printed material uses Cyan Magenta and Yellow (along with a key colour, usually black or white), so I think as opposed to tinting everything yellow, it will give more vibrance to the picture, with strengths across the whole primary colour range?
Seems to me that adding cyan would go further to expand the color gamut than adding yellow... not sure what's up with that. Improving skin tones, perhaps?
@Old fogie late bloomer
It probably isn't yellow so much as they've split the green into two wavelengths, one happening to be more "yellow".
Im personally waiting for 1000hz refresh rates...
@Chas19
Honestly, I don't think even the human eye itself can see things that fast.
@Kyle Krcmaric Mine can....I wear glasses.....I have 4 eyes...
@Bill Gates
@Kyle Krcmaric
wtf my comment didn't show, nevermind I'm too lazy to type it again.
So no 3D and no backlit LED? Wow, a little behind there, eh Sharp?
the hz game here is so dumb. i was watching one of the pirates of the caribbean movies on a 240hz tv in best buy once, and it just looked terrible. it looked "live", for lack of a better word.
i think it takes away a film's... film look, if you will.
weak sauce yo. weak sauce.
@Jones Johnson
oh great, yet another person who has no clue what the refresh rate means and how it has nothing to do with the automotion/motionflow feature (which can be turned off) that gives the soap opera effect
@championple if so, then i stand corrected. what's the point of the automotion/motionflow crap anyway (i admit, it makes MGS4 look better IMO)
@Jones Johnson It's mainly used to cut down on motion blur caused by fast-moving objects on screen, such as you would see in sports, action films, video games, etc.
@championple
I'm with Jones Johnson. Whatever it's called and whatever it's for it makes movies and TV shows look horrible. I was watching CSI on a 240Hz screen and it made it look like I was watch a "making of" show not the post production version.
Thank goodness this "feature" can be turned off on most TV's.
What no 3D?
All of the new SHARPs are edge-lit LED :(, unless they have advanced the technology to the point that it will look = the new full array LED backlit displays
@10nisman94
Yeah, what's going on with that? I want to get rid of my old LC52D82U because it's getting sooooo old but Sharp is not making anything I want to spend money on. They need local dimming NOW!
@Jensen
It's curious that there's still no local-dimming from Sharp. Sony did introduce LD with Sharp's panels that they're using in the new XBRs.
When the 700UNs were imported with full-LED-array backlights, they were blocked by Samsung for some sort of patent violations. Then there was the mystery of why they lacked local dimming. Some theorized that Sharp turned off local dimming on these TVs. Now they're only introducing less expensive edge-lit panels?
Now--- Sony, being a partner with Samsung for LCD, would be able to use these patents legally and thus *they* would be able to offer local dimming on UV2A panels and not Sharp.
Look at the size of the edge thickness! After looking at LG's LCD line, this Sharp is just ridiculous.
U2VA panels is where it's at on these sets. They should look as good if not better then existing panels using local dimming LED. U2VA provides better viewing angles and black levels. I realize other brands might have more "features" but picture quality should trump everything.
I meant to say UV2A.
Here is a link to the tech.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RotGaNucvMI
@bpmurr
why would these be better than locally-dimmed backlights? In order to do that, they'd have to raise the native contrast to over 10:000:1 ansi.
cool :)
btw you named the image lg hehe
Fking new year!
This TV needs OLED XD
