LG GW990: first Moorestown smartphone gets official, runs Moblin

In case you missed it the first time around, the GW990 brings Intel's power sipping Moorestown CPU (compared to its current generation of CPUs), a 4.8-inch panoramic widescreen display, HD Video, 3D gaming, aGPS, WiFi, 1850mAh battery, digital compass, HSPA radio, and 5 megapixel camera. As you can see above, that display splits into 3 vertical panels when held in landscape mode giving you independent control over each. Much to look forward to here. Hands-on as soon as we can get it. Until then, another pic after the break.

Intel said f-you snapdragon...
@Rick James
I'm much have a snapdragon can an x86 CPU in my pocket, those things are hot and will drain the battery on the ride to work
@JeremyBenthem
really bad typing, meant to say, I'd much rather have
@JeremyBenthem fyi Intel talked about the processor here codenamed Moorestown over a year ago and said it will use 10x less power than Atoms available at the time. This could be really good...we'll see later
@Wesley atoms at that time used about 4W, 400mW is very much for a phone processor
@JeremyBenthem
I wasn't saying it is better or worse than Snapdragon--but you have to admit its a competitor.
@Xstream The Moorestown chip will mean the GW990 is capable of playing HD video and of 3D gaming, and of course there’s the usual high-end smartphone functionality too.... That means WiFI and A-GPS, along with a digital compass and 5-megapixel camera. More details: http://bit.ly/lg-gw990-details
@JeremyBenthem Lol, well at least there's some enlightenment going around. As for the post, The Moorestown chip will mean the GW990 is capable of playing HD video and of 3D gaming, and of course there’s the usual high-end smartphone functionality too. That means WiFI and A-GPS, along with a digital compass and 5-megapixel camera.

carrier???
@newone757 HSPA radio ? That means AT&T
@Johnathan
thanks
moblin???
@qrius Its a super classified project...
jk its intel's linux based operating system for MID's and netbooks. This is its first MID and LG doesnt diserve might i add.
Lg just feels cheap and crappy.
@qrius
The world CLEARLY needs another phone platform so that it's even harder for developers to write mobile applications and get them to a large install base.
@Delta
x86 + moblin = desktop application.
All you need is revamp the UI.
using almost any languages you would like...
Really difficult yeah..
It's really the best the Open-source can get.
even better than real open source Linux + ARM there is Real open source linux + x86.
Now the question is : will Intel be able to follow Snapdragon and such.
Wait and see.
As far as I can get real linux I'm fine.
Less laggy than the Chocolate (which had nothing to do with its promo)?
SUCK THAT APPLE, hahahahahaha.
iPhone platform will die this year. :D
@rhezaganteng
doubt it. Apple's fanbase is like a cult. It's impossible tor them to understand the idea that Apple is not number 1, or that the possibility of being best does not exist in the consumer electronics market.
@rhezaganteng
let's not get ahead of ourselves, although i do believe that unless Apple makes some major changes in how they deploy and handle their phone, they could be in a bit of trouble.
@pachi72 suck that, iphone 3 billion download, there are 2 bilion download because dtupid developer release another update every night.
SUCK THAT STUPID FAN BOY. hahahahahha
@M3
That's true that the apple fanboys will always think the iPhone is the best, but iPhones are EVERYWHERE. It's waaaaayy past the fanboy crowd. A new phone would have to best the iPhone in terms of mass consumer appeal and usability - and I don't think separating a 4.8" screen into 3 separate panels is going in the right direction.
Look at the iPod for example, there have been superior mp3 players for years but the iPod caught on, and the reason it caught on is debatable, but it did. The iPhone has done the same thing, and hate it as much as you want but it is an excellent device. It will continue to dominate the consumer smartphone market until something blows it out of the water, which is doubtful.
Personally, I'd love to see an android phone that is as fast and responsive as the iPhone with a keyboard that I can type on (multitouch keyboard) and I'd be glad to switch to android.
This LG phone is pretty cool, but they are headed in the wrong direction imho. Why the hell would I be watching a movie and looking at my calendar at the same time on such a small mobile device?
@DonClark
That last post was not supposed to be so iPhone-positive lol. What I mean to say is that nothing will kill the iPhone just like nothing has killed the iPod. It has caught on with the mass consumer base and that's all that matters. Regardless of the superiority of this phone, or the nexus one, etc. The millions of non tech savvy consumers will stick with the iPhone and pass phones like this by, regardless of how awesome they are.
@M3
Still if intel get x86 to the mobile world this could be bad for Apple, since the open-source community is so strong on x86 right now,
Imagine any Linux developer could code for this.
:D
Moblin as in the same Moblin that runs on netbooks?
:O now thats a super-phone.
Brilliant.
You gotta admit, dual video conferencing is pretty sweet.
What they should have talked about was whether the thing was on WiMax or just WiFi.
You guys seriously need to update the iPhone app. Whenever I go to galleries it says "server not responding".
@n8equalsd
on a side note, this phone does sound very interesting. 4.8" screen is insane.
If the Moorestown processor is x86, when can we expect some enterprising hacker to jump in and write a BIOS layer for the device to handle booting, say, XP?
It's bound to happen.
!! x86 platform mobile phone !! How long is its battery life?
I like where this is going...
My guess is that this could be coming on Sprint. It's the only major carrier with no news of a "superphone".
@qrius
Not with that HSPA radio chip in it. As you should know Sprint is CDMA. So in that form sprint is a no go.
@qrius
I gave up on Sprint getting any new sexy phones.
The LG LS680 is the best we can hope for, whatever that is going to be and whenever it is announced.
@Ezye1313
u right!!wasn't there gonna be a big announcement about lg and sprint?i read dat somewhere jus can't remember where..
Wonder how much horsepower that phone has?
@Ezye1313
Over 9000!!!
This will fizzle pretty quick. Might only appeal to impulse buyers which make asmall percentage of consumers when it comes to a 2 year contract.
i love intel's laptop cpu's but moorestown wont cut it as a phone cpu.its idle power would be 10 times more than arm. i am sure it wont even last a day without even using.
we have to wait for medfield @22m before intel could even be competitive in mobile space. however arm with cortex a9 would still be better at that point.
Hmmmmh lg plastic. I'm trying to see in what way it's better than iPhone 3 gs??
@logic thinker
it is technically not competing with iphone. this is almost a tablet. i think cpu would be at least twice as powerful as iphone if not more and moblin itself will be like maemo(open and hackable). since it should run any linux app there wont be shortage of any app and techically should function as a portable handheld computer.
battery life would suck for sure. i am thinking 1 hour talk time and 15 hours standby or something similar.
I'm thinking it won't have enough battery life. They might have squeezed the Moorestown down a lot, but I doubt it will idle low enough to make a good smartphone base. I think I read somewhere that Apple rejected these for their upcoming tablet because they used too much power.
@Abe
Perhaps, but remember that the (rumored) tablet is in the 7"-10" range, and this has a 4.8" display. Screen size and resolution has a big impact on battery life--my CULV machine has a 1366x768 display, and that's the main reason why I get a similar rundown time as my 16" Vaio FW...
what can that screen format possibly be good for ? not web, not ebook, not really video... for looking dorky ?
