Navigon announces MobileNavigator for Android and Windows Mobile
We'd heard that Navigon would be bringing navigation to Android, and here at CES it's gone one better: MobileNavigator is coming to Android and Windows Mobile. The app will feature Navigon's trademark Reality View Plus view and Lane Assistant Pro features on both platforms, and it'll sell for $89 on WinMo starting now ($69 until Valentines Day), and launch for Android in the spring.

Huh, so... that or Google Navigation... Hmmm....
Why does the iPhone say TMobile for the carrier?
@Cheesy142 It's on edge, so perhaps someone is running a jailbroken one and unlocked the carriers.
@Cheesy142 Because it is a German IPhone from T-Mobile.
Well, why it is running on an iPhone at all? The article is about Android and WinMo.......
@bsom see where it says picture a hero here... the hero would be an android device.
@Andrew M Yeah, I saw it. Seems silly to use the wrong device then put some frilly text at the top.
@bsom The picture with the iPhone is better than nothing
@Steve B Doesn't Engadget have a copy of Photoshop? :-)
@bsom: Would you rather they waited until they got a better picture to tell you about it?
Why pay for a navigation software when Google and Bing give you pretty much everything for free?
Do you absolutely need that woman or man talking to you?
@kjb434 I'm talking about WinMo, google and bing does not give you realtime turn-by-turn navigation with rerouting.
@kjb434
I for one rely on GPS for my traveling. There is a *BIG* disadvantage to Google Navigation: Internet connection is required during navigation.
Navigon stores LOCAL maps on the SD card.
I don’t want to be lost somewhere, especially in a rural mountain road and not get signal and be S.O.L. That is worth the $70 assuming that includes all of the U.S. maps
Navigon is my favorite GPS program for smartphones (I’ve demoed TomTom, iGo, CoPilot, NDrive, Garmin and Destinator) so naturally I’m happy to see they are expanding mobile OS platforms.
@Accidental Google's free navigation is also only available in the US..
@Accidental
You bring up a VERY good point here. If you do a lot of traveling in rural areas it might be worth it to you to have a navigation program with locally stored maps. It's nice that Android and WinMo users will have that option.
I got burned on a camping trip last year using the iPhone's Google Maps as our navigation device. Luckily, the cached list view saved us. Oh, and before anyone tries to chime in with an AT&T service wisecrack, my buddy's Verizon phone was useless as well.
I like my Droid's sexy British accent, thankyouverymuch.
@ebgolfin Navigation works fine even when you don't have a good connection. Of course you have to have SOME connection, but I've used Navigation in areas with GPRS with no hiccups at all.
my sprint nav (free) in my sprint hero works just fine.
am I the only one who read 69 FOR Valentines day?
Can't it be Germany? It's not like US is the only country has T-mobile.
Quick question, what kind of dock/holder is that in the picture?
I just checked, and MobileNavigator is only $59.99 (on sale) in the Apple App Store. This is referring to the North American version.
If those prices are for the North American version of the software, then why are WinMo users getting screwed on the price?
Will it also be available this soon for the european market with maps of europe?
WTF?! MobileNavigator has been available for Windows Mobile for years. MN was originally developed for Windows CE...
@johnsonnr1 exactly what I was thinking. I used MN for windows mobile for a long time.
@johnsonnr1 +1
(hello... comment system!?)
Darn, when I read the title, I thought Navigon had made a standalone GPS that runs Android. Now that's what I'm still waiting for!
I am pretty excited about this! I bought CoPilot Navigator, and have really been disappointed, the maps are outdated, the exits are off (tells u to exit in 0.3 miles when you gotta exit NOW and the light at the end of the exit is 0.3 miles), I mean my house/street isn't even in it's database! And it's been here 5 years! So anyway... even though this costs twice as much, hopefully it's twice as good!
I have been very happy with CoPilot which is cheaper and hasn't let me down in the UK or Canada.
Maybe this will be better, but hardly worth the fanfare when the alternatives are already out there.
Why show the Iphone?.
Epic fail for anyone with Android 1.6 or above. Google Navigation works great. No need for this.
@Bobbo
Maybe it does, but Google doesn't give out that "love" for Europe. It's also cheaper if you don't like to spend 20-40/month on data charges.
My E72 has maps in the memory card and navigation license for ever, that should be the way for all mobile phones.
Nice press release, guys. If you go to Navigon.com, as the press release says to do, all you see is iPhone. One of the main reasons I said "fuck these guys" and went with CoPilot for $20. At least they acknowledge that they have versions other than iPhone.
Still don't see this as an "epic fail" of a product, though, since it does different things than Google Maps, etc.
so where do you get a copy of this software? Navigon.com only has the iphone listed and microsoft marketplace doesn't have it either?
I don't care about the navigon or their software, but I'm very intrested in that windshield mount.
@adp79, the press release says it will be available next week at pocketgear.com.
anyone know what kind of windshield mount that is?
Couple problems here...
1.) This article says it's on sale now for WM (I can't find it anywhere and it's not on Navigon's USA site either.
2.) Another article on CNET mentioned that the WinMo \ Android versions will not offer live traffic updates. That to me is the complete dealbreaker. 69$ is reasonable for their software and maps, it's quite good actually, but even google maps for free has traffic updates...come on now.
Also, those touting google's free nav software -- have you actually tried it? It's not that great imho.
@(Unverified) I'm using it all the time. It has its faults (sometimes it forgets to say when to turn, or it is too late), you can't say you don't want highways etc., but the basic functionality and address finding works great. And maybe the voice problems are due to running a hacked version outside the US. But it is the second beta version... obviously there is still work to do, but I have no doubt that these features will be added over time. The biggest flaw though was that you can only use it where you have free internet, otherwise it is a bit... expensive. Would have been awesome on my London trip recently, but the 7 € per MB... This is the main advantage of Navigon... but then again Navigon won't tell me which bus to take.
I still cannot find this software for sale _anywhere_.
What gives? The Navigon.com USA site says they only sell iPhone software for american people. The fuck's up with that? And if you choose international, the WM version is the uber old one, not the one pictured in the CNET article. Something is wrong here.
