Needs OLED.
@TheSmartOne OLED my ass, I saw a 40" Samsung LED set next to Panasonic plasma showing the same video and making the plasma look like lame in comparison.
@3rdsun Clearly this was an unfair comparison on purpose.
@3rdsun I do not understand the relevancy. Are you saying LED is good enough or OLED sucks?
How do they maintain rigidity with something that thin?
Very cool setup they got their with the towering LCD garden
@wonderbread Yeah :) It's very green! :D
@wonderbread
I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist.
That's what she said.
Yep. Ultra thin LCD? Who cares? So it's half as thick as it was before, which makes it what, a half an inch instead of an inch? Big deal. Call me when it doesn't have a pathetic contrast ratio and I might care just a tiny bit!
@grumbles actually, 3,9mm means it's less than a fifth of an inch thick... which is impressive however you look at it
@grumbles you do realize that most LCD TV's with Local Dimming LED backlights claim they have a Dynamic Contrast Ratio of like 1,000,000+:1.
Some of them now perform on par with most plasmas (other than the Kuro's and maybe the new top tier Pannasonics)
People keep going on about OLED like it's the greatest thing ever, and perhaps it does have the potential to be, but at the moment, it still delivers massively overblown colors especially reds.
@Amnesia87
Hahah. Don't quote bs dynamic contrast numbers at me. That panel would be lucky to have higher than a 1000:1 native contrast.
@grumbles Indeed. Take a camera and photograph the blacks and whites to see for youself.
@grumbles
My Samsung UNB8500 has 7,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Or are you being contrary just to be a Troll?
@(Unverified)
So what? Do you know what Dynamic Contrast actually means, or how it's measured? It's not a useful measurement by any means. Manufacturers use it just so they can wow clueless consumers with big numbers.
@grumbles
Not unlike how you expect to 'wow' us by spouting off your preeminent television knowledge, only to be shunned by an indifferent audience?
@thebadmintonking
Ignorance is bliss.
@Amnesia87
He's actually correct; AMOLED and plasma have better contrast ratios with deeper blacks. But inexpensive, large AMOLED screens are still sitting out there in the distant future.
@grumbles
Well, I agree with you. Recently I bought 47" 1080p 60hz HD TV.
To made this decision, I was researching about HDTV technology. Dynamic Contrast is very simple trick. (when they measure black, backlight is turned off or lowered) LCD pixels cannot block backlights completely, but OLED does not have to do that. because OLED does not have backlight. this is why local dimming trick came out.
Also. I am very disappointed about 120hz and 240hz since I found out every HDTV only can accept 60hz input( Which means that 120hz and 240hz are emulation from 60hz original sources) except 3D ready TVs (they have additional connector)
3D tv is total capitalism(it is bullshit to me). Even HDMI cable(1.3 ver) can transfer more than 4.8 GB/s (1080p 120hz 3D contents), TV manufacture want to you buy 3D ready TV which is more Benjamins require.
Most TV programs and movies are less than 30FPS.It means that 60hz TV can handle that (30hz for left eye, 30hz for right eye)
however TV maker don't care about it.
I am a person who want 3D TV(with glasses) to be die. ( Sorry guys)
@raiden8383 Like capitalism? Barry is that you? Lol what a moron.
@metric
I means that each person needs glasses, it require additional $$. They charge for it $50~100. four family member? $200~400 additional money. I'd like to see real 3D without glasses. as you know shutter glasses tech been out for long time. I think what they need to do is 3D without glasses.
I love new technology not marketing sht
anyway who is barry?
@grumbles - you must be a REALLY happy person...

Actually, your TV is getting results close to this:
- Real World - Samsung UNXXB8500 LED TV's
Contrast ratio local dimming OFF: 4605:1 - Deepest Black .08 / Peak White 368.37
Contrast ratio local dimming ON: 17,300:1 - Deepest Black .02 / Peak White 345.99
Very nice indeed for and LCD, but you're getting nowhere near 7 million to 1. Not even close mate. ;) Wouldn't stop me from getting one; but you shouldn't listen to the marketing.

@grumbles
There's a troll in every blog and you're it! Get over yourself or maybe you just can't afford a Samsung LED TV like I have.
it is too insane thin
Ships in a big envelope?
@Abe
A big manila envelope.
Seriously! At first i thought the side viewed TVs in the bottom pictures were antennas for the one in the middle!
@Abe
the envelopes are reserved for macbook air's
Damn. Beautiful.
Edge Lit? Or Back Lit?
And yeah jaw dropping....
I nearly skipped over the two side-view images after the video thinking it was nothing, and then the "Holy Shit" moment befell me.
@Nintendo Tim same thing happened to me
@Nintendo Tim
Same here
Edge Lit? Or Back Lit?
And yeah jaw dropping....
That's nice. I'd prefer a really thin bezel though.
So does this thing cause cuts when you set it up?
Its like a giant glass razor...except it has HD!
Yes it is backlit not edge lit,
Yes it has localized dimming.
The ironic thing is 3D is coming out on the thinnest TVs ever made.
@axendo79 Heh, that's gold.
I can't wait for my first 1080p 3d porn movie experience. It's gonna be so awesome.. like Avatar!
@Aboozer - gotta be careful as you may get poked in the eyes...
Engadget, how are the viewing angles of these new TV's? LCD's are improving everywhere but in that area.
On another note, any manufacturer claim of dynamic contrast is BS, just as the guy posted earlier. A typical LED LCD has a contrast ratio of about 2000:1. The average plasma's are around 5000:1, Kuro plasma around 10000:1.
how big do these go in screen size.
Tried to take a photo of these at the show today and the guy said no photos...WTF!
Is this one of those TVs that is really thin, but then has a bulky box hidden somewhere else with the rest of the electronics?
@scyber probably, I don't see point in thin tvs if you have to have a separate tuner box.
@danhawk911
I agree. Plus the difference between 3.9mm and 1inch is pretty much irrelevant to me. There is no practical place I would place this TV that would require it to be thinnner than an inch. I'd rather have more features packed into a 1 inch thick screen than have a screen this thin.
@scyber
Look closely at the last 2 photos; you can see in the middle of the backside of the TV, there is a thicker box, about 1/2" wide.
Is it just me, or is this unnecessarily too thin. I mean yes it results in some wows and great press for them, but in looking around the walls Most the items I have hanging are thicker than that.
I have some unframed canvases that are about 1/2" thick, some that are 1.5" thick. I have framed stuff that approaches 2.5" and even framed photos are all still thicker than this thing. In other words, most people who could afford this have stopped putting posters on their walls probably wouldn't be even slightly adverse to something 1" thick if it looked classy enough.
I think the battle for thinness has reached the silly point and they should start focusing on reducing the bezel and improving contrast and general image quality rather than sacrifice those things to go any thinner.
But heh, with it that thin, you could probably have it framed with a matte to cover the ugly silver bezel.
It's hard for me to believe that thing has a tuner it wow just wow I want one.
Dynamic Contrast ratio is pure marketing according to HDNation's Robert Heron (who's been in the TV review / analysis biz for quite some time now). The ANSI Contrast ratio (which is usually 1000:1-2000:1, etc) is much more accurate.
80000:1 is just silly for example
