Samsung's
IceTouch PMP sets itself apart from the rest with its two-inch transparent AMOLED screen, and boy, is it a looker. While the rest of the device is slightly reminiscent of a baby toy, the screen itself is killer and the image couldn't be more clear or crisp. Unfortunately, the engineering sample we got to mess around with was not loaded up with any video so we couldn't see that in action, but if the smoothness of the interface is any indication, playback shouldn't be a problem -- save for the fairly tiny screen. We've got video of the interesting player in action after the break.
So what's the point of the bottom half? Holding the components of the device?
@Vulcanus Presumably. I thought it was a touchpad and that the screen wasn't touch sensitive, but apparently that's wrong.
It's a little silly to have that whole bottom part do nothing while your fingers are blocking the screen to navigate the UI.
Come on, is that all you could do?
Innovate, Sammy, Innovate!!!
I don't understand the point of the transparent screen. Seeing things through the screen just degrades the image on the screen (which I'm sure is even worse outside with bright things shining through), you lose some of the brightness you could have had as some light is showing out the back as well as the front, and everything's backwards to anyone you hold it up to. Also, as noted above, the components must go somewhere else until they make transparent CPUs and the like.
Course I didn't really understand the point of the Sony thing, either.
@dajimmers I totally agree.
It is like someone trying to sell me an expensive book printed on transparent paper. It only serves to make it more difficult to read.
I suppose throw that tech into a windshield for heads-up displays, and I'll love it.
@Anatidae HUDs with that would kick. This one's just a test. It's cool, but way unpractical.
Looks better than the screen on the Xperia Pureness. Still don't see any point to this.
This is the part where I give them a better idea. No fugly do-nothing half of the device. All screen with a few buttons. No transparent screen please. unless this is for the purpose of both sides displaying video. Then you can keep it. Until then, your new pet stays outside.
Unless the upper half slides into the bottom half, I agree that the bottom part looks ugly and useless. Having transparent display is cool, but not so practical. But I guess I can sacrifice some for the coolness.
Improvement of technique amazes me day by day. I’m looking forward to see it in real. Does anyone know when it is going to be released in public?
It's really impressive product. I just saw other pics of this one and they looked good. http://www.flickr.com/photos/35920857@N07/4265387982/in/photostream/ However, since I know Samsung's UI is not that great, I have to wonder does this players' UI work fine or not. Is there anyone who actually experienced that player?
