Samsung OLED identity card animates your creepy, disembodied head (video)
For better or worse, it looks like RFID-ified identification is here to stay. Just about the coolest threat to our civil liberties we've seen this week, Samsung Mobile Display's Specimen Display Card Prototype is a pretty bog-standard ID -- until you bring it within range of an ISO 14443 RFID card reader, at which point the OLED display springs to life, summoning a 360 degree closeup of the card holder's head.Looks like it just got a little harder to change your identity, no? Peep the video for yourself after the break.

Can you say pointless?
@Oxyrt
P...p.....
I can't. ):
@Oxyrt
Only in that Engadget posted this 6 months ago:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/19/video-samsungs-e-passport-turns-your-head-into-a-rotating-gove/
But at least it's coming on nicely.
@Oxyrt
This is the coolest erosion of my privacy I've seen yet!!!
@Oxyrt
Yes. Incredibly useless.
Thousands spent on 45 extra degrees to judge a person's face, as if security was really that incapable.
Not to mention how much more it would cost to put it in authorities hands and then "educate" them on how to use it.
This might be useful if it was a mass storage device with criminal records and such, that's about it.
Oh man...try waiting for one of these to be made for you at the DMV...
....the lines just got longer.
Very Blade Runner
@Wolfticket Totally blade runner esq, I've seen something like this in a few movies, cool tho!
@Wolfticket
Can you say:
"Where am I?!"
"In the Village."
"What do you want?"
"Information."
@Wolfticket
I don't know why, but the word "Multipass" comes to mind...
it is kinda scary that this all is german, from the usage explanation to the card information. thought we already had the new electronic ones confirmed... http://www.thelocal.de/sci-tech/20091214-23931.html
"Just about the coolest threat to our civil liberties we've seen this week"
Oh noes, my civil right to forge my identity is being threatened! Where will it end?
@Gad Get
Hahaha I know right. They can't win. "Here something that will protect you identity..." "No I wanna be able to forge and change my own identity but not let other people rip me off..." errrr
Erika Mustermann! She is a total classic over here in Germany :)
And now she even is in 3D. Wow!
German wikipedia link about Erika: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Mustermann#Erika_Mustermann
@hq She's the German equivalent to the American "John Doe" I assume
@hq yeah i know, i live in Germany. But why using her instead of him and on top German "how-to-use"?
love the headline
replicant #6 520 200
An RFID in a passport where it could single you out in a crowd overseas is a little unsettling.
Attaching an RFID tag to your work badge, which would also give you entry to the building and other doors inside, completely sensible. I'm sure there was sooo much resistance to tech that could replace rekeying buildings when keys are lost.
RFID reader powered screen is very cool. Next up, put a little speaker in that to say 'Access Denied' when you swipe your card. If course I'd modify my to say 'Good Morning Dave'.
Two Weeks ... TWO WEEEEEKKKKS
@jasondefaoite
You totally beat me to it! Now get your ass to Mars!
That's one large adams apple Ms. Mustermann has!
SHE'S A MAN BABY, YEAH!
@flanders
I was thinking the exact same thing. She must have a voice like Kathleen Turner... or maybe James Earl Jones.
Wow this looks straight out of an '80s movie!
C...C...C...Combo Breaker!
They should have used Roy or Zora's face/head for the demo.
That would be a Nexus 6, by the way.
"Specimen" across the top makes me think all kinds of Big Brother-esque conspiracy plots. I am guessing that is the company name though.
Is it just me or does the animation pic look straight out of the 70's?
@Danthok
I agree, this is starting to get ridiculous. Too many cameras and other privacy intrusions. I'm about ready to go out and buy a farm in the middle of nowhere, if they even exist anymore.
@flanders
Go claim yourself an island...I'd be glad to help, we could recruit an army as well and when people come to vacation there we charge them 10 USD for a soda = D
The future is here! yaaassssssss
Lol @ title. This is kinda creepy....
You can see another video Samsung OLED identity card on http://www.ilogan.info/le-prototype-du-e-passport-oled-de-samsung/
This is where you are supposed to use a hot looking female model.
...and 37 seconds later, the first RFID "badge-formatted" porn appeared online...
I fail to see how a 3D spinning bobble head is going to help the TSA? They have lists, check ID, do random searches and people still manage to board planes and try to blow them up. Technology is only as good as the people using it.
Why does there need to be a screen IN the card itself?
From what I gather, you need to enable the screen with an RFID device like a scanner. Why not have the screen in the scanner? Oh, I get it - they won't be able to sell thousands of OLED screens that way.
There is no sanctuary...
Creepy. Also I would be careful posting statements about Blade Runner. Philip K Dick's daughter might come after you with a lawsuit.
Phhht. Lame. This was so done thirty years ago.
The lady's picture looks like on of the video reels of the cyborgs from Blade Runner.
