Hey! Don't run away just because this here display has
3D in its name -- it's optional don't you know. Sony is showing off its 24.5-inch OLED television here at CES, and we have to admit to being blown away once more by the sheer vibrancy and clarity of the output. The jump from the 15-inch panels that are still
very sparsely available in retail channels is most welcome. We can totally envision spending our happily ever after with one of these screens serving all of our visual needs, 3D or otherwise. Sony's reps couldn't tell us
when these will make it to market, but the pics below should whet appetites appropriately.
WOW....
@vishnu93 So good it looks shopped
@vishnu93
I will run away simply because of the fact that it is a Sony. Sony is dead to me over a camera that they refused to do anything about. I usually bypass anything that says Sony in the title, but the bear and the "don't run away" caught my eye.
@vishnu93 I know, Polar bear crotch shot. Breath taking isn't it.
mmmm OLED
Probably cost over 10 grand
@techlord Exactly, OVER 9000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@techlord But i wonder how many years till there down to ~$500, im guessing 4 :( hopefully 3
PASS! I can do without polar bears in my living room, thank you very much.
@bill cant fart
Your avatar rocks.
@geekthree
I agree points for sheer originality.
The death of 3D will be more satisfying than HD-DVD.
@mugatu
I agree. Too bad we'll have to deal with all those preservation societies trying to keep the 3d polar bears alive...
@mugatu
but not as sweet as the downfall of tablets and slates :)
@mugatu
Why does everyone here hate 3D? Seems pretty cool to me, at least in theory, as I've never even seen one in a store before.
@mugatu
I personally looking forward to the death of Blu-ray
@manekineko2
Because people are never going to sit in their living rooms with glasses on. And because it is the Television manufacturers big idea to keep people buying new TV's and its lame. I don't need another $2500 television. Fool me once ...
@Steve B
+1 for you.
@(Unverified)
Abso-freaking-lutely. ;)
@mugatu I love 3D, but I JUST bought a 52" $2000 120Hz Sammy... Not gonna be upgrading for a while lol
Hopefully 120Hz works with 3D
@mugatu
I really couldn't agree with you more.
want!! WANT!! WANT!!
All cool. In 5 years time or so, when I'm sick of my current LCD TV, these things will be affordable. That's fine.
Wow, this screen looks awesome on my LCD the colors are so deep and vibrate... wait a second.
I personally always loved looked at HD tvs on the SD QVC channel.
If you watched QVC you should GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE
There are no excuses.
Wow, thought they had a polar bear tank at CES this year....
@MONKEY
Same!
Sexiest!
I can't afford it, it's too small to really be useful, I don't think I'll ever get into this whole 3D-in-the-home thing, blah, blah, blah.
I want one.
Whats with the stripe running through most of the images?? Just near the top of the screen...
@goseki
Yep looks like a technical defect.
Actually since it shifts position I guess it's a reflection of some lightsource.
@goseki
Or a glare from a overhead light. Notice it's only in the pictures that look at it head on.
wow! it looks very vivid!
I'm glad to see this. This should be a nice beginning to bigger screens, better tech, and eventually lower prices. Woo I love technological progress.
What we need, though, are more companies developing their OLED tech. We'll see it really take off when that happens. It's probably already happening.
So far there are at least 4 or 5 companies that released OLED demo stuff, and some chinese companies make small ones for portable, so I'm not sure what you have in mind.
Even if it dispensed chocolate and sexual favors, I don't think ANY 24-inch TV could make me live "happily ever after with one of these screens serving all of our visual needs."
Talk to me when OLED TV's are big-boy sized.
@kirkb 24" is almost the perfect monitor size.
Then it's too bad that this is a 3d TV and not a computer monitor, isn't it?
wait.. are 3d glasses required to experience a 3d tv??
@gcatechis
Ohhhhh yes. And not just cheap cinema 3D glasses. $100 jobbies.
@gcatechis
I've been wondering the same thing. If so, why couldn't you just do 3D on a regular 1080p?
@Gregorian that's stupid.. who would want to have to wear 3d glasses just to watch TV... Is that why people are saying 3d TVs are going to fail?
Most 3D displays can switch to 2D, so you can use the 3D for movies or really interesting stuff (lost in 3D might work? or NGC, nice underwater coral reef exploration in 3D maybe) when you don't mind using glasses.
They also make 3D displays that don't require glasses though.
@Wwhat cool!!! I was just thinking that.. if it can switch to 2D then I'm all for it..
@gcatechis I'm really liking the design too! The fact that it looks like it's coming out of the furniture unit is a plus..
I wonder how many years it will be before we have affordable 40" OLED screens?
@Hotrod
5 years, give or take.
Gorgeous!
All I have to say is thank whoever you worship that that isn't the Polar Bear that I've seen on Web Soup.
