We've already seen a pico projector here at CES that packs
1GB of internal storage, but Syndiant and Foryou have now finally announced a new device that has an upgrade where it really counts: resolution. Unfortunately, it's still just a prototype, and there's no word about pricing or availability, but the projector does use Syndiant's 1,024 x 600 resolution SYL2061 panel (pictured at right), and it still fits in a shirt pocket. Nothing else much in the way of details just yet, but this one's definitely the pico projector to beat when it comes to pumping out pixels.
Yeah so how am I going to plug my hdmi cable into that now?!? Apple create a mico hdmi cable please?
@fatslug
Your kidding right, it's merely a resolution chip that goes into a projector? Yeah and because Apple totally makes HDMI cables.
@TehPenguin
Whoops. Didn't mean a question mark on the first sentence!
Nice, but I hope this doesn't just mean that we get $700 dim pico projectors with a lower resolution than a bright $700 standard projector.
It seems like with all the manufacturing innovation, projectors still have the same price as a decade ago.
@dan1123 That's not really a bad thing though, if prices remain static but the specs go up, that's a win for the consumer. Computer companies have been doing this for years.
And if what you say it's true, then it's even better because of inflation.
As with all tech, they'll be more expensive to start off with for not much benefit - although is comparing a large projector to a pico fair? They're designed for totally different environments. Once a bit of healthy competition is injected into the market, things will run on their natural course.
Or did you mean literally the process of building the things should mean lower costs?
@Whiternoise
I mean that as the process is more refined, the companies incur less cost to build, so keeping prices static don't help the consumer, they just add to profits.
This'll go well with the broken screen on my Eee.
Why not go bold, increase the size of the thing by 1 mm and make it an even 1024x768? I am really getting sick of 600 line displays, when everything from Blu-Ray to Windows 7 really banks on you having at least a 720p display. Have you guys tried running Win7 on a 600 line netbook? about half the control panel windows have the OK buttons below the task bar where you can't click them.
@RandomGuy
Damn good point, as if 1mm is so much.
So, I guess 1024x768 is nothing but a pipe dream.
I sort of covet mini projectors, but so far that laser infinite-focus one peaked my interest most, because of that infinite focus feature.
WHY CAN'T THEY JUST FINALLY MAKE A FREAKING 1280X800 PICO PROJECTOR PANEL?
I don't care it's a mini projector instead of pico. But 1280X800 makes the most sense in the world as a resolution!
1280X800 allows seamless mirroring/extending of laptops.
1280X800 allows movies to be played back in 720p
1280X800 allows 16:9 resolution work too.
COME ON, WXGA should be the standard resolution! These new 16:9 laptops make me sick!!! What's the point of having a screen with the aspect ration of a movie on your laptop!? Most of the time you need more vertical resolution than horizontal, so WTF? It's more scrolling for sure.
Not to mention the BS associated with 16:9 "OOOH YOU CAN HAVE TWO SPREADSHEETS OPENED AT ONCE!!!" NO SHIT!!! You can have that with 16:10 too with less scrolling!
LASER PROJECTORS are at 1024x768 resolution today and can easily go higher to WXGA and even 1080p. They are the smallest technology that will actually fit inside a slim cell phone. Always in focus, you don't need to diddle with expensive and space eating optics. The contrast on lasers is much higher than LCOS or the TI DLP stuff.
ok what evil clown said, "no...cut it down to 600 lines....we save the xga version for christmas....and charge the fools an extra 20% premium...WOOO HAHAHA.."
I wont be troubling myself with laser-sharks and batteries though, these panels go right in my eye socket, my backlight is the sun.
Oh look, now i can have 2 spreadsheets open at the same time....whilst driving.
...and i just.."Select All"..OHHH SHHHIIIIII......
