Windows Mobile 7 coming to MWC in February, not just 'evolutionary'
We'd heard some rumblings, but apparently Robbie Bach let the cat out of the bag at an analyst briefing this week, stating that we should expect a showing of Windows Mobile 7 at the Mobile World Congress show in Spain, which begins on February 15th. He also added that the OS (which he's played with, surprisingly) will "set the bar forward not in (just) an evolutionary way," and that Microsoft is going to be "more engaged" with OEMs in its "go to market approach." We love a good buzzword or three, but the hope here is that Microsoft has learned its lesson from iPhone and Android and is ready to compete in the next-gen smartphone game in a big way -- a WinMo 7 showing just four months after the release of Windows Mobile 6.5 certainly smacks of that.

[Thanks, Matthias]

Go microsoft, though I'll still keep my iPhone 3GS.
Haha.. now we see how long it takes engadget to photoshop a headline picture. Posted on 11:15pm with a normal picture, photoshop up at around 11:29pm.. not bad, but somehow i dont feel like this discovery was worth the comment. :-/ damn
@gargle 11:15am*
The Microsoft slate is really a big windows mobile phone!
@GV2811
wow that was the most grown-up comment i've ever read on here...kudos!
@GV2811
cool, i am confident MS will be able to turn around with wm7 as they did with w7, they are capable and they have no doubt the reasons too!
@One Love
and that can only be a good thing.
@GV2811 Yeah, Go Microsoft, I'm so sick of Apple and the damn media drooling over their 1 device. It's time we get some good competition so Apple's crap isn't the only stuff that we hear about.
@One Love When Mr. Jobs said that he will slate us with his tablet alot of hype started to gush on the techworld. MS sees this and that's why they are trying to gain competency by releasing their own HP tablet: http://bit.ly/hp-slate-tablet-details
Question is, With 'MS new tablet' and their WinMo 7 update, is it enough for them to be back on the game? A game wherein Mr. Gates left them at its peak.
@ninagosaimas There you go again... all excited about a device that doesn't even have specs posted yet. Get a life fanboi. At least the MS/HP tablet has specs and we've seen it. The Apple tablet will be just another piece of hardware... woo hoo.
@crapple Looks like you've been so petrified by the iphone's super success that you forgot Google is competing with their Android smart phones. You know, the ones all manufacturers are chosing instead of WinMo. Also you forget how RIM cleaned the floor with WinMo in the enterprise market. And of course Palm is charging full ahead with the Pre and Pixi in the consumer market. That's the good competition you apparently didn't know existed.
And remember, MS doesn't know how to compete so anything they try is not going to be competition at all, just failure.
@crapple
And that's why you're also mentioning, added more fuel to the fire, bloody idiot.
@HighestRanked I have an Android phone because I'm so sick of the iPhone fad. It's a great device and iPhone ppl can shove their iPhones in their iSockets.
My comment was in reply to the OP - I sincerely hope that MS pulls one off because the smartphone market is pretty much suck right now. There are a bazillion WM phones and they all suck. We either need Android on the variety of phones that WM was available on or we need WM to not suck anymore.
@HighestRanked: So which manufacturers, exactly, have ditched WinMo? Palm, who would look like they don't have confidence in their own OS had the continued with WinMo, and Motorola, who have been haemorrhaging share for years.
Meanwhile, LG, the world's third largest mobile phone manufacturer, have signed on to produce WinMo smartphones, and while market share have gone down, raw user numbers have gone up, indicating (I think) that most people buying iPhones are new to smartphones.
@crapple "I have an Android phone because I'm so sick of the iPhone fad"
Fashion victim. LOL.
@One Love You kid, but the zune interface is appearing on media center because of the large format touch capability.. It's likely WinPhone 7 will get the same UI feel, so I wouldn't be surprised to see some tablet series at some point with the same again.
The thing is that it might actually work...
@gargle One of the most anticipated features is the ability for it to seamlessly use it with your ZuneHD just like iTunes. Other feasible rumors is it using TouchFlo and Sense and some dash of silverlight 3.0. For sure the MWC event will be exhilirating. New info: http://bit.ly/winmo-7-leaked-info
Windows is the best
@(Unverified)
its over 9000 isnt it?!
@skyblaze That's an extraordinary amount of Internets to win.
Oh god, the only thing Engadget needs now is numbering their comments. Dummies trying to get gets will be all over the place.....
I hope the HD2 will have WM7 come this Spring.
@ceo2be
That's really wishful thinking. If it gets it at all I would expect it to be towards the end of the year.
@ceo2be It was already announced the HD2 will get the upgrade right? Not sure if it was just a rumor
Anyway... can't wait to see what Microsoft has for us! HTC can only do so much to hide the ugly (although very functional, no complaints there).
I hope the HD2 will be slightly more pocketable.
@indeed HTC's official Russia twitter account initially said it would in a reply, but that was then retracted, and left hanging...
http://www.wmexperts.com/htc-russia-twitter-says-hd2-getting-windows-mobile-7
If the minimum hardware specs are as leaked in the spring...
http://www.rgbfilter.com/?p=815
Then the HD2 meets all the requirements except for the the amount of Flash memory (supposed to be 1GB+ for WM7, HD2 has about half that).
I'd say it probably will, but since I'm on contract until March anyways, I'm going to wait until MWC to see what the scoop is. I've been debating a WM phone or Android... in either case it's probably going to be an HTC phone with Sense on it.
@Alan Strangis Ah! Thanks. I'm sure that, if it doesn't get the update, XDA will provide. Let's just hope the OS doesn't exceed those 512MB or so of flash available on the HD2.
But, honestly, I'd rather get a HD2 with hardware keyboard. Make it happen HTC!
@CJ
HD2 fits perfectly into my pocket.
Anyways I hope wm7 will help get some apps in the marketplace, b/c the marketplace is complete crap atm :(
@ceo2be
My guess is that we shall see the HD3 and the TP3 running WM7.
I may just ditch my BlackBerry for this.
@rederikus
do want HD2. hopefully a wm7 rom comes out not too long after release. too bad its on tmobile but oh well i'll suffer for hd2 goodness
I'm sure WinMo 7 will be earth shattering. Like that HP tablet/slate Ballmer demonstrated. :(
@HotFuzz
Microsoft is a software company with limited harware manufacturing (Zune and Xbox). It's not surprising to me that they don't unveil a new device. Apple is both hardware and software. They have a closed system, which makes it much easier for them to announce new gadgets, since they are actually making them. Microsoft has to rely mainly on the production capabilities and imagination of their partners.
The Windows Mobile front has more potential of the "ooh aah factor" because smart phones are the latest craze, and MS's partners (like HTC) are putting their own touches of flair on the devices that run it.
I'm really looking forward to what MS has to offer on the mobile front.
@Musicman247
"...limited harware manufacturing (Zune and Xbox)..."
Don't forget mice, keyboards, presenters, etc. Pretty big market.
I would love for Windows to get back in the game.
@perceptrons
Their biggest problem is that they dont TALK enough. They need saturation advertising on TV and MAJOR mainstream sites.
They simply never needed to engage in PR with WM because it was never meant to be a consumer OS, so advertising in business trade publications was more than enough.
No more of that. They need to be on offense, and they need to learn from Motorola and Verizon as to how to get major buzz going for a phone in a media with too many Apple-worshiping "journalists".
@perceptrons besides an overhaul of the UI, the one thing I want from WM7 is a better media playing experience. I'd like to see it hook into the media streaming feature of Windows 7 as well.
@Alan Strangis Medias on WM7 is based on Zune...
@Goona
"
Look at the leader of the Windows Jihad finding a way to squeeze Apple into his post, bloody idiot. "
Windows Jihad? Reeeealy? Am I honestly trying to get you to use MS products?
Newsflash: I really dont care what you use.
Most of the post was talking about MS's problems, and the shot was not even at Apple.
@LAY I understand where your coming from, but actually talk is cheap, especially in the case of Microsoft. They are letting the competition take the heat and set the stage, and you know it's smart as hell. When your perceived as being on the bottom where else is there to go, but up if they truly put the innovation that they are capable of to work and learn a little from Google and Apple, when it comes to aesthetic prowess, they will have a killer product on their hands. Seriously, Microsoft still owns the corporate world, now mix that with the Socialites,hipsters, and techies and what you have is a revolutionary product. They can do it, I think everyone has truly forgotten who we are talking about. Have they made mistakes, yes and big ones, but most people will forgive them if they come with something great, believe it.
@LAY
I've seen plenty of 'Windows Phone' ads, thank you. I own one, and trust me, they need to work on the software - not PR. Here's to hoping for a better WM7 than 6.5...
@LAY
Dude you complain about an Apple bias in the world in every one of your post, what does this topic have to do with Apple. You need some therapy to deal with your obsession, it seems Apple is eating you alive.
@Goona
And you can't help but post in nearly every MS related article, despite an obvious hatred of the company.
What does that say about you?
@LAY So according to you, even though WinMo was supposedy never meant to be a consumer OS, WinMo's biggest problem is lack of proper marketing? Ahahaha
how about MS actually fixing WinMo's rotten, 10+ year legacy API frameworks and updating that ancient CE kernel instead of letting HTC throw more lipstick on that hideous GUI. No amount of Tegra or high/rez OLED hardware is going to make up for those severe deficiencies.
Are you one of the frew who still believe the iPhone is so extrelemy successful only because some sort of self-imagined super marketing effort from Apple? :)
@Goona That poor boy Lay is traumatized at how much Apple is kicking butt whil MS can't do anything to win.
@jon
Yes every one of my posts is talking about Microsoft, another idiot.
@HighestRanked
It seems he's having nightmares about Apple, to him it's all a big conspiracy against Microsoft.
@Goona
"Dude you complain about an Apple bias in the world in every one of your post, what does this topic have to do with Apple."
Actually I dont, and my comment was:
"They need to be on offense, and they need to learn from Motorola and Verizon as to how to get major buzz going for a phone in a media with too many Apple-worshiping "journalists"."
I wont bother to get into diagramming sentences, but part of the subject of that sentence was about journalists.
@1ofdakoolkidz
"Microsoft still owns the corporate world"
uhm... on what planet? Here on Earth RIM has been wiping the floor clean with WinMo for years with their Blackberry army.
@LAY
What does "Apple worshiping journalists" have to do with this post. Like I said keep living in la la land that Apple and the world is coming to get you and Microsoft.
@HighestRanked In my corporation the BlackBerry Army was shown the door and we were all given shiny new WinMo devices. "In the current cost environment we can achieve significant cost reductions utilizing the Windows Phone platform..."
