Inbrics M1 is the thinnest Android slider we've seen, probably everything we ever wanted
We don't know what everybody else in the phone business has been doing lately, but Inbrics has just unveiled what looks to be the near-ultimate Android phone. The Inbrics M1 is a slider handset with a (great) 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display, 3 megapixel camera, front-facing VGA camera, 16GB of built-in storage, microSD slot and all the other usual trimmings, but what's particularly stunning is that the phone is not only half an inch thick, but it has a full QWERTY keyboard that's surprisingly clicky and typable. The phone is running Android 1.5 right now, but it should be up to Android 2.0 by the time it hits the market in March. The biggest concern is the 800MHz Samsung processor, the same chip that's in the Samsung Moment, but the interface (as demonstrated in the video after the break) is smooth as butter, and they demo'd it playing back 720p video just fine.
Inbrics actually has a lot of custom UI and software running on top of Android, but the most interesting part is what they're doing with video calling and beaming media from handset to videophone to TV to laptop over DLNA or through an access point device that plugs into the TV over HDMI. Inbrics also has a Cover Flow-style media browser that isn't super deep in functionality, but still puts the stock Android stuff to shame, and some rather sexy custom widgets.
The plan is apparently to get a carrier to bite and rebrand this phone in the US, so price and availability are still pretty hard to pin down, but if this phone can hit the market soon it sure could give the rest of the QWERTY Android sliders out there some body image issues.

@HighestRanked
ok ok you suck
That is a lusty design, but I'm a little confused as to why I would want to bother with 720p video on a 480 pixel screen...
@StvDvs because you can run 720p mp4 video without converting it down?
Landscape keyboards are crap. I prefer virtual keyboards to a landscape. When they release an android phone with a portrait keyboard i will be happy.
@risk This fantastic phone really impressed me. Currently shit-Inbrics.
"The biggest concern is the 800MHz Samsung processor, the same chip that's in the Samsung Moment, but the interface (as demonstrated in the video after the break) is smooth as butter..."
Why, because it's faster then your beloved iphone or because its smooth as butter?
@spaz1
Come on now, I know Engadget tends to be biased at times but this didn't even seem biased towards iPhone at all. It seemed like they really liked the phone. They called it smooth as butter and possibly the Android phone they've been hoping for. I think the chipset comment was an honest mistake, thinking that it wasn't as powerful as the recent Droid/Nexus One.
Gotta ridall these android fake phones. There is only android phone for all = google Android = the Nexus !!
Flipping eck these Androids are getting common now and the OS releases are not even consistent. As for the ultimate Android phone.... Hardly!!!... I do wonder what Apple is making of all of this... They must feel like they really have perform now and also compromise some of their ideas... Such as customisation?? Maybe??? Who knows just a late night ramble
That thing, with a 4.1" screen, full phone functionality, and T-Mobile 3G, would be outstanding.
Test
@logic thinker
i am the internet. Welcome.
No iphnekiller here. Who's even heRd of this brand.
@logic thinker
Who said it was an iPhone killer?
Verizon start biting!
16 Gigs internal storage plus microSD expansion? Now that wasn't so hard was it fellas!
Why has it taken a relative unknown to accomplish what should be essentially a standard for new multi-media-intensive phones/devices?
I really hope this device has decent build quality though, else no awesome specs will help them out of that hole.
@MXY23
that's a lot of hyphens
@MXY23
I think that price will be the biggest factor on this device, not quality.
@HighestRanked when I looked "avert" up in the dictionary, I saw that you meant "aver"
@theylive or possibly "averse". Or maybe even "adverse," but that would be only slightly less incorrect than "avert".
Holy crap its thin.
If it's everything engadget would want in an Android phone, does that include multitouch?
@theylive
Very good question. I'd like to know about that too. I really want to see more of this thing in action.
looks interesting, would like to read more about it.
Add Maemo, ditch capacitive screen, put in an usable camera, emboss the keyboard a bit better and make it a bit thicker for some extra battery juice and I'm sold... Waaaaaait, that would almost make it as good N900... Oh well...
I don't like that comment that he made at the end of the video that it's up to the carrier to say what the U.S. consumer wants, The "CARRIEER" doesn't represent it's consumers!!!!! There have been numerous handsets over the years that have been compatible with ATT's network (Nokia N95) that ATT didn't pick up, because the carrier makes way too much decisions for us CONSUMERS.
@Jayshmay I agree. How hard is it to know what US consumers want. visit any forum or gadget page and do some research. and for your average consumer visit youtube and look at those comments under phone reviews.
that ui is just beautiful
@HighestRanked
When you see it you'll shit Inbrics.
Garbage phone.
@Goona
Give up and live with your iPhone. You realize people can see your previous posts.
@TheGM
At this point, I think most people have realized what a troll Goona is, anyway.
@TheGM
So ?
I'd buy it unlocked if it works on AT&T 3G!!
@5pteron
great input. upranked.
make a 4.1" version, put it on T-Mobile USA 3G, and carried by T-Mobile (for the 20 month instalment plan), and I'm in.
@Unverified User Same here!
Second to last comment by the Inbrics rep. Man he's just asking to get raped. They should present the phone, allow the carrier to add their stock crap (SprintNav, VZNav, NFLMobileLive, etc) and thats the deal. Not this, 'let the carrier customize the phone' mentality. Carriers suck. At everything. Don't give them this to handle as well.
@MRCUR: I so, so much agree with you, carriers need to bud out!!!!
Let the manufacturers concetrate on making the device, and let the carrier concentrate on making the the device recieves a signal.
its nice to see a smartphone running Android with a QWERTY keyboard. I really dislike it how manufacturers are slowly stepping away from adding physical keyboards to their smartphones.
Even though I'm not into smart phones, I would totally buy this I mean look at how thin it is! Makes the G1 look overweight.
My biggest gripe is that it has been slimmed too much to be durable. The first thing that comes to mind is the PSPgo...
I want to have sex with that phone, dirty no holds bar unprotected sex!
Man, Sprint needs a good android phone with a physical keyboard. Otherwise it's Samsung Moment or LG Touch Rumor (ugh, I don't really trust LG with phones). I like Sprint's service, but they have so many crappy phones. I would get myself a Verizon phone if I had the chance, but I'm stuck with sprint as long as my g/f has Sprint.
@Mike10010100
Ahhh but see, you want to believe that "inflammatory statement" and "constructive" are objective words that everyone has a general understanding of, but you know that they are not. If that really was the case fanboys of any camp would not exist as they actually do. Those words are in fact quite subjective specially here in Engadget and you know that differing opinion from the Engadget norm --however stated in any logical or decent form-- is solely an invitation for down-ranking and name calling. So to suggest that this great majority doesn't down-rank in the face of opposing opinion is simply not wanting to admit it, or lying to yourself, or being too dumb to be aware or being in denial and it really is that simple. In the real world in democratic America objectivity is a cherished value but this isn't the real world, this is the Internet and in cyberspace things work quite differently. If you have not yet woken up to that fact then do it now because otherwise you'll be living confused and bitter in some alternate reality. So if you don't like my posts go ahead and skip over them and don't read them because at least you're still free to do that much.
I am HighestRanked.
Meh, I don't care about front facing cameras or video calling so this one doesn't do anything for me, but I like the keyboard.
@Mr Oos
Maybe they're thinking that the majority headphones still have jacks that are at a 90 degree angle? Neither of my headphones are, but it if you have headphones like that it shouldn't be much of a problem.
This phone has potential. ANd I hope someone *like T-mobile* picks it up. Otherwise, we don't know about their h/w QoS track record, battery life and durability.
It's already 14months and we need a G1 replacement (i.e. GSM 3G Tmo) --the CLIQ, though has probably the best keyboard out there, just *doesn't cut it*.
Sweet
@Mr Oos
That's what Stereo over Bluetooth is for.
