CES 2010 is awash in a sea of
ridiculous 3D glasses, but that's nothing compared to the insanity of the
Vuzix 920AR, an $800 set of augmented reality specs with cameras built into the lenses. Sadly, the 1504 x 480 display just isn't very impressive: we certainly saw a stereo 3D image, but it was grainy, dark, and generally unusable for anything apart from the augmented reality maze game on demo. Walking down the street with these things on your face would be incredibly dangerous, as far as we can tell. That said, the maze game did work seamlessly -- you hold a pre-printed cardboard sheet in front of you, and in the glasses you see a 3D maze with a ball and puzzle elements that respond to "gravity." That's it, though -- there's no other software involved here, and unless you're deep into developing augmented reality applications or extremely interested in looking like a killer robot from the planet Nerdotron, your $800 is better spent elsewhere. Check a Joanna Stern Video Event after the break.
awesome idea tho.. i hope they improve its resolution
2010 is shaping up to be the year of 3D and augmented reality. Sweet.
Can't wait for PacMan 3D.
In before the dorks saying they'll hit it?
@IEngadget
I like your user name. It's clever.
@IEngadget
I'm confused you are talking about the device, or the nice lady?
;p
better resolution, wider field of view and a bit more style and this thing could be the future.
think of the possibilities, taking photos and videos in ego perspective, zoom in any situation, get infos on everything and everybody you see. get directions, play games, watch movies. the possibilities are endless even though it might take some time till this becomes reality.
"I can't get out of the dice"
"It's funny cause I'm in Vegas"
... pause
"Hahahaha-----ha"
@Special Agent Steve not going to lie that part of the video stuck out the most to me...
hahaha
I know you guys are at CES and everything and thats why we're getting all these different Hands-on and stuff, but how come theres never been anything to do with emotiv or neurosky headsets?
@bluemajik
All wrong. Total lady magnets they are. They must be. A female is wearing them.
I hope she just has a really small head so I can imagine that this company is not completely restarted making a device this size.
My virgin ears bled when Joanna said "shit" when she fucked up in the game. Errrr...
Internet is not public TV.
Make that 'US public TV', there are plenty of countries were people aren't quite so uptight and confused.
@Wwhat Miss the sarcasm in that fuckin' post?
What's she supposed to do in this game?
I'm not sure if there's much potential for these virtual boards, but I think a motion sensing remote (like the Wii) would go nicely with these 3D goggles.
@Infinity88
You are clearly not getting it, this device uses cameras to get the orientation of the board then adds virtual reality items to make a game, so the board is the controller, think project natal
(make sure you pronounce natal wrong, instead of saying nay-tall say nah-tahl, else MS's joke gets out)
Wii is outdated in comparison.
meh
Hahahaha-----ha
That Asian guy was awesome.
I honestly can't wait till augmented reality. I hope it gets implanted in your eyes so you can download clothing. Taking Custom Design to a whole to level.
Also making it easier for Furries to elope.
I'd hit that...but I'm drunk.
Technically an interesting device, but blind users of The vOICe definitely need a much less obtrusive appearance to reduce chances of getting mugged while wearing a head-mounted (stereo) camera setup.
