First Else hands-on at CES: 'still alive and kicking'
We caught up with Else at CES to check on how they're doing with the First Else since we last saw them back in November. According to CTO Eldad Eilam, the basic functions of the ALP-based phone are finally done and dusted, so now Else will mainly focus on fine-tuning its snazzy visual effects until beta around the end of March. There's no doubt that it's also finalizing plans -- pricing, content distribution, and remote sync service, etc.-- with various partners in the US and Europe. If you happen to be in Asia, then sorry -- apparently Else has no intention to visit you guys just yet, but you might get lucky if you sneak into Sharp's factories in Japan or China. For the rest of us, we shall continuously gaze at our hands-on videos until First Else's expected end-of-Q2 launch -- we've got a new one for you after the break.

I have to say, it looks nice and snazzy, but realistically it can't compete.
Interesting concept but probably will be vaporware.
@RockNStuff
thank you, Gartenburg
@TonyMontana2367 Drat, who figured out it was me?
@RockNStuff Probably. But stranger things have happened.
It does look nice , which happens to be the basis on which most consumers buy products anymore.
@Jonathan K Agree that it looks nice and consumers like something that looks nice. Though this is yet *another* app store developers will have to deal with and another interface standard they have to work with? If they don't have an app store, not sure if it'll win everyone over. Motorola razr was successful because of its design, despite its limited functionality, but that was many years ago in a different setting. Now it's all about smart phone and your appstore. I love the interface, I just don't know if they'll make it easy to develop for, or if developers will follow its GUI guidelines.

That stuff was amazing. I wander why they do not show this. The call management on ELSE is second to none
Can't see how this could compete with iphone and android.
@fractalbit
I kinda see this competing against Blackberry and Nokia, compared to those two.
what else?
Will all the apps have a blue color shade? I would of liked to see the web browser in action. It's a interesting OS but it's gonna need to offer a lot to really compete.
@Chas Percodani
Yeah it's WAY too monochromatic. Like a phone from a bad non-Speilberg sci-fi movie... from the 90's.
@TareG much agreed. What it could use is user-created themes to liven up the tone.
@Chas Percodani
yes, the UI needs moar color!
It looka cool, but theres not enough other color, its way to blue. And seriously, what about us lefties?
definitely sweet.
I do want to know more and check its browser. The competition is heated, so if they want to survive, they need to make a big splash ASAP.
Very interesting concept, seems easy to use. This looks like a it could be awesome after a few phones are released and a year or two of development on this platform. My biggest concern would be that Access may not follow through with development of this platform. Garnet OS anyone,
"drop-in knitting club"??!?! Oh engadget... knit yourself out of that one
If I say no iphonkiller here. Willl I be called fanboi,?
@logic thinker
yes. youre already on my shitlist
Something about the graphics...it kinda lured me in...hmm...
It's a little on the chubby side but nonetheless a very interesting device & I wish them the best of luck.
Looks too monotonous to be usable.
This Else is something else
I want this so bad.
why is the guy on the video whispering?
Is the Stapler guy from office space doing the hands-on? "mmmanum anum fish eye anumanum mmm."
@Anticrawl
he also wouldnt shut up and just demonstrate the interface. and in the end he ruined it with the glare.
can I get a plus on the "meh"?
this is a breath of fresh air in terms of interface. it different from the standard grid menu layout, typical homescreen, and whole interaction.
i have to say that i want one, but waiting like everyone else to see how the final product turns out and the apps and support there are for it.
exactly. the interface is really compelling.... but will it deliver outside a tech demo?
Also seems a little laggy, esp when he's in email. This phone prototype needs more horsepower when it hits marker.
I'm bored to tears with my iphone interface. It's super functional but i wish it could "skin" it with something more irreverent and visually fun.
Beware beware, I smell the stench of a vaporware.
Gorgeous UI. I'd love to be able to buy this today.
This will become about as relevant as Samsungs Bada.
To small, and all that blue color =not good.
@eka
That's what she said..
maybe they should have skinned android so right away they would have a few apps available ...
@wupolo I was thinking the exact same thing, this would make a great Android Skin. Reminded me of what Larva Labs are doing with their Android Skin.

Sexy UI, and although its very responsive, I think the animations could be a bit faster.
There were some aesthetic parts, like glowing borders that could be made a bit thinner too.
It's gonna take a lot to take me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never have
I'm yet to see more colors on this device, any Idea why not?
That glare at the end sold me.
Zune-killer for sure. LOL.
Crap, I keep reading it as Fur Elise.
@Akhen *ü
The UI reminds me of mobiles you see in films. A far-fetched OS made just to look good for the camera. I wonder what the battery life would be like.
like every one said,
THIS THING NEED MORE COLORS!!!!
please add some more colors!
This UI needs a bigger screen to be appreciated.
I've had the Hero, Tour, Pre and iPhone, and this looks more interesting than all of them. I need it and I'll follow it to whatever carrier gets it.
I love this UI -- it's INNOVATIVE instead of copying off other's they created something unique, and that is truly what the smartphone industry lacks today, everyone is copying off each other instead of taking risks and trying to create something unique that is still functional. I'm sure there will be themes, but I kind of like the colors the way it is.
@(Unverified) so true...love to see something different every now and then. Definitely following this thing's progress!
