McDonald's starts dishing out free WiFi at most of its U.S. restaurants

McDonald's promised that it would be make its in-restaurant WiFi service available for free in "mid-January" and, right on cue, it's now kicked things open to everyone with a laptop and a fast food craving starting today, January 15th. That service previously cost customers $2.95 for two hours of use, and it's already available at 11,500 of the company's 14,000 locations. Incidentally, that also makes McDonald's one of the largest providers of WiFi hotspots (free or otherwise) in the United States, with the company itself claiming that no less than 16% of reported WiFi hotspots in the U.S. are located at McDonald's.

Wha ? Over here in Europe you got free Wifi at all McD since almost 4 years now ..
This is something that should have been done from the get go.
In Germany we have WiFi since 2006 in every Mc Donald's. If you have the largest Telecom DSL flatrate it's 4 free.

Get some cling foil, put it over the keyboard, starts wifi-eating.
Cling foil is good for remotes too, thin enough to allow operation but protecting against dirt and grease, they use it on remotes in public places in my area sometimes, in fact that's where I first saw it actually.
Not sure it would work on keyboards but I don't see why not, certainly should be ok on chiclet type ones, only there's the issue with the trackpad I guess

Wendy's FTW - how can you compete with 99cent and wifi? They've had it for awhile.
I'm not in a McD's long enough to make use of WiFi. And I wouldn't want to touch my laptop after touching the food there. heh.
dont get too excited, if its anything like australia mcdonalds free wifi, it will be lsow as sht prob limited to 128kb with half the pages timing out. wont stop the tryhard yuppies pulling out thiere netbooks trying to look like king sht though

3 kids 5 and under. Playland+ipod Touch+wifi= happy parents.
There is a better chance that I return to a restaurant if they have free wifi.

They have done it for years here in The UK.
Hmm, I can't help but wonder why it's taken so LONG for this to be implemented.
Here in Aus, most of the McDonalds within reach of my location have free Wi-Fi, and have for quite some time now.
Is it logistics? Are there simply too many restaurants for this to have been viable before now?
lol this is pretty funny since australia maccas have had free wifi for a long time, at least a year. NOW the US is getting it.

If any establishment wants their customers to eventually leave, they should somehow implement a popup ad that displays the nutritional content of what they just consumed. That way they'd be inspired to get off their ass and take a walk.
