Proving once again that those who don't watch
The Engadget Show are always going to be one step behind those who do, our latest star guest
Erick Tseng has dropped a dollop of exclusive wisdom on us: Android's next big iteration will be known as Froyo. That's short for "frozen yogurt" and fits right in line with the zany naming scheme that has delivered us
Cupcakes,
Donuts, and
Eclairs so far. If you had your money on Flan being next in that alphabetical order, sorry to disappoint. No additional info could be squeezed out of the Google man at present -- such as how much further along Froyo will be from Android 2.1 (technically considered part of Eclair) or when we might expect the upgrade -- but we've got a name and that should be plenty to get us started on another wonderful journey of soothsaying and speculation.
delicious.
@skyblaze
The version after that is code name: Gelatin
You see we have a huge sweet tooth here at Google and want our customers to get as excited for our OS as children are for dessert.
@Google Then I guess H = Humus? 'I' could be a tough one.
@CLCDAN
Ice cream?
@Google I think Gelato would be better... gelatin on its own has no taste.
@skyblaze
Why IS THIS BREAKING NEWS? Its the name of a version of software. Software that sucks compared to the competition,
it still doesn't natively support Exchange calendar sync and occasionally crashes.
@skyblaze
It's "Breaking News" because the android fanboys will burst an aneurysm if Engadget doesn't do that...
Cuz really all the android fanboys know how to do is flame the writers of this website that they hate so much for just happening to prefer Apple.
@Troll/TheRogueFFAngel
It's breaking news because it's hilarious. Hilariously delicious. Deliciously hilarious

@Troll
If it doesn't support Exchange Calendar sync natively, then please explain to me how I got my Exchange calendar, contacts, and email to sync before ever opening the Android Market. I'm really wondering how I did that if there is no support for it.
@ToniCipriani We will take that into consideration.
@Skyblaze http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KWbnxGcDCQ
@Google
If you haven't heard its Goatseed LOL
@Google
I have a feeling it will be a two-syllable word, like ginger. Although ginger isn't a "dessert..."
@Google perhaps Ganache? 2 Syllables, Dessert, letter G, and is delicious...
@CLCDAN Humus isn't candy.
@CLCDAN
No! H - Hot fudge.
@Steve B Magic...
@CLCDAN H can be Hotcross as in hot cross buns.
@Jordaan
Mmm, ganache... I miss my sis's cupcakes now.
@skyblaze No other info has been given on Froyo (like when we can expect it what version of Android it will be… 2.x maybe even 3.0..) so for now the name will just have to suffice. More details: http://bit.ly/froyo-new-android-details
@(Unverified) android G.. should be called Gingerbread!
why food names?
Because they can. And it's easy to recognize.
@outlaw85 .. I've come up with code names before and generally the development team picks a general "theme" and then you work alphabetically through the list. I came up with japanese fish for one .. and worked on two releases: Fugu and Gari.
@outlaw85
And Ubuntu with it's X (animal) double naming scheme.
@24hourpartypal
Google likes food. Next update will be a "Pie" derivative. We all know Pie>Cake>Froyo.
Fro-Yo ... sounds racist to me...
@outlaw85 Apple is a food, i see no one complaining
@MeepMo Sorry, but if you derive Pi you get zero. A derivative of a constant is zero.
Broke away from baked goods...wonder if this is going to be a big update or not.
@gentlefury
The theme is desserts, bro.
@gentlefury
Using that logic, it could also be the biggest update. =p
@pspkicks
And they have all been baked so far.
@gentlefury
"I must warn you, that this Nexus comes with a terrible curse"
"that's bad"
"But it comes with a free Froyo!"
"That's good"
"The Froyo is a beta"
"That's bad"
"but it comes with your choice of wallpaper!"
"That's good"
@gentlefury
Actually, android has seemed half-baked to me so far.
@CJ Well done, sir.
@CJ
OH! i see what you did there
@CJ
lol, classic
I'm very satisfied with my Nexus One except the lack of multitouch. I don't know what interesting things they could add besides that, honestly.
@bradsh And before anyone goes off on a rant about how android has multitouch, that IS ridiculous. It doesn't. 99.99% of the apps don't have it, and none of the stock apps have it (which is where it is needed most, as those apps are used the most). Whether it has it in some other country is irrelevant to me. For me, Android does not have multitouch.
@bradsh A better default music app?
@bradsh Go unlock your bootloader and load up some multitouch from XDA.
@bradsh I was very satisfied with computer software 1996.
Stop innovating and competitors pass you by.
@bradsh it does have multitouch, we just got get a few of those people on older devices up to speed =/ (G1 = no true multitouch)
@bradsh Sure, but the Nexus One doesn't have it yet either, at least not until the FULL 2.1 is pushed OTA. (Remember, 2.1 isn't officially out yet until 2nd week of Feb, 2010)
@bradsh droid eris then. multi touch comes on the stock apps. since android has multi touch
@(Unverified)
Some people will always find something to complain about. It doesn't have multitouch. It doesn't have exchange calendar sync. It doesn't wipe my ass. For some reason I don't recall hearing the whining about how the iPhone didn't have a camcorder, or cut and paste, or mms capability for the longest time. At least Android is making these things work through OTA updates and making you buy a whole new device (ie 3GS) to get the capability.
@Webcat
er...should be instead of making you buy a whole new device...sorry bout that.
@bradsh
Ummm, yes it does...my droid does multi-touch just fine. What because you have to take one extra step and install the software to do it it doesn't exist....how freakin lazy!
@bradsh Then download dolphin browser and B&B Gallery and stop your bitching.
@Dreadly
Cept the Dolphin browser is ultra shitty compared to the stock browser and only runs via ad support (no pay version).
