Proving once again that those who don't watch
The Engadget Show are always going to be one step behind those who do, our latest star guest
Erick Tseng has dropped a dollop of exclusive wisdom on us: Android's next big iteration will be known as Froyo. That's short for "frozen yogurt" and fits right in line with the zany naming scheme that has delivered us
Cupcakes,
Donuts, and
Eclairs so far. If you had your money on Flan being next in that alphabetical order, sorry to disappoint. No additional info could be squeezed out of the Google man at present -- such as how much further along Froyo will be from Android 2.1 (technically considered part of Eclair) or when we might expect the upgrade -- but we've got a name and that should be plenty to get us started on another wonderful journey of soothsaying and speculation.
I would have been happy to watch the show but didn't see any links to it. So you did you spend a whole hour saying Froyo to each other or was there other information released during this discussion?
One simple request for Froyo: a more capable music player, possibly integrated with an online, web-based sync-application (i.e. web-based iTunes).
Would be nice if the G1 was upgraded to at least 2.1 before hearing about 2.2
@sintricate
I'd put money on the G1 never seeing 2.1.
@ feranick
yeah, you wish......so far the only change from 1.6 to 2.1 is life wallpapers :)
whats next then, Gelatin? Huckleberry Pie? Italian Ice?
Oh good. I was getting fat on those pastries. A low sugar alternative, finally!
Please change the font throughout Android to something more elegant... a la webOS.
Ew, I hate yogurt.
OK fine, just this once.
@Michael Leung
Frozen yogurt = similar to icecream cept 10x more awesome.
Hell my T-mobile my touch still is at 1.6.. wtf
Ok, I'll admit my mind was blown when I learned these where in alphabetical order, I con't figure out what food was the newest version! lol
Wow, and not one post bashing Engadget for posting a non-story about the name of the next release of Google's OS. I hope the Apple-bashing hypocrites keep this in mind when Engadget runs a story on the name of the next version of OS X.
next would be Android Ganache?
Fro what? I hate that name
Froyo's only big in CA. Especially SoCal. Home of Pinkberry. I suppose NorCal is getting yogurt overload, especially this past year. The rest of the nation is like "huh what?"
@dmo580 Froyo is in Brazil now too!
I didn't see anyone else mention this, but why would the next one be "Flan"? That's another F. The next letter is G, so I'm guessing Gumdrop.
hopefully they polish this thing up a lil bit and really work the bugs out. I think Android is in it's tween years readily approaching adulthood so i think it's time google should start sprucing up android like mobile osx or palm's web os. We all know it has the potential.
Aw...why can't it be called frogurt?

That's all good and well but when is the Engadget Android app going to be available?
Does it or does it not have exchange calendar sync? I see differing opinions.
@bessmilda It does, to some extent. If your company has any sense of security, though, it will not sync. Android does not support secure Microsoft Exchange policies at this time. Which to me, is a complete deal breaker. The Android Fanboys will tell you though you can just buy a $20 app called Touchdown which lets you do it...But, it is UGLY. It's a shame Android can't do it. Windows Mobile/iPhone have been doing it.
@daving313 Thank you for this valuable information. I was gonna consider dropping my BB for this, but it appears I would not be able to use it. Can't believe they would release a phone without this necessary functionality. Thanks again!
the next after will be called 'Gurt
Froyo>Gurt
:p
should have called it Frodo lol ;)
Gummi Bears?
i guess flan was too ethnic
What's next cookies n' cream
why not just make version G "Google?" or maybe that's too tacky...Googol then, sans legendary typo :p
It's funny that spell check corrects Googol, but not Google. As it turns out, all it takes to change the English language is a 400 billion dollar R&D company based on a search engine.
I agree with Gelato though.
anyone know what A and B were?
(i'm hoping not just alpha & beta)
I'm waiting for the Zabaglione version.
Froyo sound like Frodo with a potatoe in the mouth. I know I'm silly.
Froyo is a frozen yogurt chain in Brazil
