For a while MS offered a remote record service through TV.msn.com. I happily used this for a few years until MS decided to pull the plug. It required that I installed a add-on app to my MS Media Center, then log on my PC using my hotmail account. I could remotely see what my PC was scheduled to record and I could change or add new shows. I guess that I have not accepted that it is gone. On demand is a better option anyway. However, I like live TV for sports and some news.
Media Center won't load from a Remote Desktop session, but you can use other 3rd party remote tools. Still not the same as a real web guide via a web app or a phone's app.
@MLamont Crap, my MCE machine has been out of the loop for so long, I hadn't realized this service was gone!
I was just about to get it going again. But, I have AT&T Uverse getting installed at the end of the month, so I'll have a free DVR. I wonder if their DVR can stream from PCs?
@Down8 You won't be able to use MC to connect to the DVR STB even though MediaRoom and at least MC on Vista supports it. The U-Verse STBs will be upgraded to MediaRoom 2.0 later this year and it's claimed that AT&T will enable the feature for XBox 360s to connect and function as a standalone STB: http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/xbox-360-will-support-atandts-u-verse-tv-later-this-year/
IIRC, MC on Win 7 supports MediaRoom 2.0, but AT&T probably wont enable it. There isn't any word on if AT&T will charge extra for the privileged to use an XBox 360 as a STB or not. No, you probably will not be able to use it as a DVR either.
the Nook Color proved it was an undercover tablet all along, Barnes and Noble has hit back with this latest Nook as proof of its focus on one thing: reading.

@MLamont
there was a 3rd party app called webguide. Dont think its active anymore so not sure if it will work with WMC7
Remote desktop should work to see GUI stuff remotely right? That's free from MS and pre-installed.
