Motorola takes Android to Korea with MOTOROI
That Korean-language version of the XT701 we saw recently is starting to make more sense now that we know exactly what was up Moto's sleeve: meet MOTOROI. The company's very first Android-powered phone for South Korea takes most (but not all) of its cues from its China Unicom-branded doppelganger, featuring a 3.7-inch WVGA display, 8 megapixel camera with 720p video capture, HDMI-out, and -- like most phones sold in and around Seoul -- support for T-DMB television tuning. Like the Droid, it's available with a home charging dock that'll turn it into a handy alarm clock; unlike the Droid, though, the MOTOROI features multitouch browsing out of the box similar to the Milestone in Europe. The oddly-named phone (is "ROI" acceptable for short?) launches early next month on SK Telecom.

@Steve Jobs CEO Really dude? Focus on improving your life anD maybe you won't have to impersonate someone to feel good about yourself.
@Steve Jobs CEO
Pay nokia ya bastard!
Go MOTO!
@B3astofthe3ast +1 moto it's on the way of sucsses with android based phones
@ango Slow moto:
"3G: Yes, 384 kbps"
:\
@rock99rock and a front facing camera.
Damn. Someone needs to come that little green Android down, it's hyped up on all those pastries.
Why are all the Asian phones so ahead of American and European ones? Could someone explain, please? (other than the whole carrier stuff; this phone can work just as well over here, except for the T-DMB tuner).
@fatslug We do have 2-year contract subsidies and the sort. But even with that kind of thing, phones are more expensive. But phones are not our primary computing device! Computers are.
@fatslug
I live in Southeast Asia... While we are indeed willing to pay unlocked prices and carrier subsidy is rare, we certainly do not use phones as our primary computing device...
@fatslug your comment doesn't apply to korean mobile phone market, at least
Roi in french is "King". Just sayin'.
@otarolgam Exactly what I thought when I saw the name. The french Moto-King.
wow that phone looks sick, 8 mega pixel camera, multi touch, 3.7 inches.
Do want.
dont get cocky, moto..
@Edobe I believe there is a front-facing camera, as video calling is a very common feature in Korean-release phones.
@Edobe I'm sure that's one feature that wont be on the U.S version.
Is it bad that I first parsed that as "MOTOROID?"
@Cheesus Crust yea, that and multitouch
Good god, this phone is a beast!
@rock99rock Hell, I'd take it any day of the week!
I wonder if it would be possible to activate it on Sprint network stateside.
@Gorilla800lbs No because all 3G phones on SKT are WCDMA.
@Edobe Who uses a front facing camera? For what, so that someone can look at shot stills of your face? Don't be ridiculous. Every phone has it and nobody uses it.

Knowing Motorola, they'll find some way to screw it up. There'll be some flaw that will stop sales dead. That company is going nowhere. They're just a bunch of followers with no vision of the future. Google has Motorola in their pocket and will likely keep them a step behind in Android development.
@Average White Boy
Hmm, where have I heard this before....Oh right, you said the same thing about the Droid and look where that went.
I swear, if you like your iPhone so much, why are you so insecure and bash every other phone company and mobile OS out there?
It's a monster! (And an awesome one at that!)
@ChazClout
must resist urge for thats what she said joke
@josesxi Front Facing camera's are you used for video calling, and and even better Skype mobile.
that design makes me want to cut off the tumor on the right side
google is american, moto is american, why in the world does asia get handsets like THIS first? Jealously..
pretty sexy looking device there. Even with the side bump thing.
isn't T-Mobile rumored to pick this baby up here in the states?!
I think I can hear 50 million Koreans laughing at American 'innovation'
*sigh
Motorola, will you just die already?
No, Motorola, don't die.. Sell us a waterproof Sholes tablet phone!
@Wesscoast
Why do you find it necessary to bash every device that doesn't being with an "i"? Do you really not have a life?
@PBB
well, Apple is American too, so I guess he's just bashing America in general.
@Guticb Designed to take full advantage of the power of Android 2.0, MOTOROI™ gives you a full touch screen with a huge 3.7 inch, high-definition WVGA (480X854) display, making it easier than ever to view full page websites, videos, games, or photos. -- If you live in S.K, there's no doubt that this Android device is spectacular, but we all know that's not the case if you'll look with the current android smartphones in some western countries. The specs are awesome but I would NEVER buy this phone: It looks ugly IMO.
The specs are great, but I'd NEVER buy this phone: It looks ugly, IMO.
@TareG
Low rank this one. Same old Engadget comment system.
Motorola must be pulling in alot of money now. Cause they are coming out with phone after phone. Show like my Droid doe.
Not a bad phone. :) Oh & to answer the people who question about phone specs in overseas vs in the states. If you're curious you can google it. I have before. My findings have shown that it's really just the wireless infrastructure, America has a much larger landmass than SK & Japan. Those countries are much easier to cover b/c of their size. That's why they have so much faster & better networks for cheaper. Not to mention their population density helps to grow that infrastructure faster. Another thing to note is that there are more hoops to jump through to make better smartphones & faster networks a reality in the states than in many other countries.
Feature phoneesque hardware coupled with smartphone software. To me, it just seems like if you are going to put smartphone software on a device, it should be on hardware that looks the part.
@rock99rock
I'd tap that... screen
koreans and japanese are on trains all day - they have so much time on their hands - phones are a primary computing device for them - of course they'll shell out more for their phones
Here is a video I found on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdnzJWN4hpk
Not only 8 megapixel camera but I believe a Xenon flash, finally can ditch my Omnia I8000 & Nokia N82.
..
If the nexus is a Super Smartphone then this is an Ultimate Smartphone, well done Motorola.
