Nintendo has already been talking up
what a Nintendo DS successor might look like, so it wouldn't come as too much of a shock if we saw the device in the near term. That's what EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich believes, anyway. He has a research note out saying that Nintendo will be releasing a new handheld in the next 15 months, and make the announcement within the next eight months. The reasons are numerous, including the need to bone up on online distribution, rampant piracy, and just the regular march of technology that Nintendo is never unaware of -- just ask the routinely trounced handheld competition. Unfortunately, there's nothing "solid" in this report as far as we can tell, so we'll have to wait for some "unnamed sources" or our cousin's friend's dad's barber to weigh in and tell us how it really is.
It would be nice to see another hand-held entirely and not another iteration. Another DS wont stop piracy, because just like with the iPod, the home-brew community will be all over it.
What about the 2 to people on the internet not seem to understand? This would be an entirely new system.
@Hiro I know it would be an entirely new system, I just used DS as a placeholder.
@AlienSix I think Apple buying Nintendo is a match made in heaven. They both have very similar business models and quality standards. They're both innovators. Eventually Apple with have the audience Nintendo needs. Look at the console numbers vs. Mobile internet numbers. Nintendo is doing fine now, but they have missed the mobile internet trend and I don't know how they can possibly recover.
@rinamontag I agree you can slow it down but you cant stop the homebrew community from doing what they do best. Exploitation of code.
@nicholas1987ucsb
Apple can just wait for Nintendo to go out of business. Why pay a premium price for the company to buy it out. If Apple decided to build a real hand-held mobile gaming device (with buttons and analog controls) people would practically stop buying the DS. In a way, Apple is giving Nintendo a break by not completely stealing the market from them. I don't think Apple should do that, Apple should just stay at the periphery of the gaming industry grabbing a few extra crumbs of revenue.
"the regular march of technology that Nintendo is never unaware of"
Is that a joke? Nintendo is always unaware. See online multiplayer, CD, HDTVs, DVD, processing power's benefit to gameplay, upgradable firmware, multimedia functionality, background downloading, sharing online currency/account info between multiple devices, proper internal storage (ie: hard drive) voice chat, multiple user profiles on a single device, the list goes on.
Nintendo is anything but aware of the regular march of technology
@nicholas1987ucsb
I am really sorry, but I couldn't bear to read past that first line.
What?..... WHAT?!
@Average White Boy All the while we already have a new Nintendo DSi XL up for grabs to UK as early as March this year, don't we? The Nintendo DSi XL, sporting two 4.2 inch screens (93% bigger than the screen on the Nintendo DS Lite) More Details: http://bit.ly/nintendo-dsi-xl-uk-details
Hey, a picture of a Game Boy Color. I get it. Because DS2 is... second. And the Game Boy Color was sort of the second, kind of. Sort of.
...
Good stuff.
@Parias
wrong
Game and watch Series 1st
Game Boy 2nd
Game Boy Pocket 3rd
Game Boy Colour 4th
@OCEAN CLAK still makes sense because:
1st: DS
2nd: DS Lite
3rd: DSi
4th: DS2
@OCEAN CLAK
DS2 would be the second generation hardware of the DS, like the Gameboy color. Period.
DS phat, lite, i are all mostly redesigns.
@TareG
The Game Boy Color can also be classed as a redesign of the original Game Boy, only really bringing a colour screen and infra red
@Parias
I so wish I could uprank you twice. I'll just have to settle for downranking OCEAN several times.
@kamikazeshrimpy dont forget the giant DS
@kamikazeshrimpy It's suppose to be "HD" so I like the name Nintendo HDS, kind of a portmanteau-abbreviation of HD and DS
@Parias
I keep thinking Dual Shock O.o
@TareG DSi is actually a hardware upgrade too, so it's more like the GBC.
@kamikazeshrimpy
We're missing the LL in the equation =)
@Parias
Hey dont forget Virtual Boy, and DS XL and plus your avater has an ape in it
@kamikazeshrimpy
in correct DS lite and DSi were only upgrades not a all new handheld sorry DSi is same gen as old DS phat, just like gameboy pocket to the original gameboy
Actually...
1- DS (phat)
2- DS Lite
3- DSi
4- DSi XL
5- TS...?
they should call it the 3DS
Take THAT Apple!
@Alexicov
Take which apple?
@Gad Get
How 'bout them apples?
@Alexicov
shup, the internet taught me how to grammar
@Alexicov
Nintendo 3D[s]
DS2. Double the ram. Fin.
@jol
Double the SCREENS. Call it the Nintendo QS. Holy shit.
Double? That's still not very much. My wet dream is to have the DS2 make the nexus one look like weak sauce
@jol
IMHO they need to more than double the ram.
@jol
DS only has 4MB of ram, you sure you only want 8MB of ram in the DS2!
@OCEAN CLAK
DSi has 16mb of ram already
@Murkurie
DS 4MB 67MHz, 250x192 res
DS Lite 4MB 67MHz, 250x192 res
DSi 16MB, 133MHz, 250x192 res
DSi XL 16MB, 133MHz, 250x192 res
Double of either is still not enough
@OCEAN CLAK
my point was the DSi has more then double ram of the DS, I know specs, i'm not here to argue.
DS2 should have a 2 GHz processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and a 1920x1080 screen.
@einhanderkiller
In that case sport, just buy a PC and put a DS emulator on it.
@einhanderkiller
It will definitely need to have a (N-) 64 bit processor. I think they should also add a keyboard and touchpad, and blueray drive and call it a day. The device will sit on the users lap (complemented quite nicely by the clamshell design). Now what should we call this thing?
@New Reformation
DS'i'Book
@einhanderkiller
Forgot to mention QuadCore ;)
@einhanderkiller
I have insider information that ds2 will have a 6" capacitative touch screen, no physical buttons and will feature a new fruit logo on the back
@dzeikei
I hope it's a grapefruit. I really like grapefruit.
do we really need dedicated handheld gaming devices anymore? look at the zune hd and the nexus 1 they have amazing specs and can run really nice games. maybe Nintendo needs to focus on making game software for phones and stuff.
@saturnblackhole
No hardware buttons to play games sucks.
@Solidstate89
No hardware buttons in general makes me pretty sad. I'll keep the hardware buttons as long as they still put them on phones.
Convergence only works when there aren't serious design compromises. In this case the ideal control scheme for a gaming handheld is just too radically different from a PMP or smartphone.
@saturnblackhole
hahaha, ignore the iPod touch with like 60,000 games...good job Redmond employee #92874
@saturnblackhole
I will just pretend I never read this.
I hall use the "View Comment" for low-rank LESS often.
How about we make games that require a code to make them playable? Like the PC..
