Sure, those new Core i7, 27-inch
iMacs are lovely things (
when they're working), but there's something missing: the sense of touch. That's coming soon, according to a report published in the Chinese
Commercial Times. The new 22-inch model is said to slot in between current 21.5- and 27-inch iMacs, will use a capacitive touchscreen provided by Sintek Photronic, and unsurprisingly will be built by
Quanta. Beyond that, and a supposed release before the end of the year, we know nothing -- but maybe we'll learn more at a
certain press event next week?
Cleaning this screen won't be as hard as other LCD screens. Just like the iPhone it's a glass panel. All you need is a soft towel and may be some windex.
And I think the touchscreen on an iMac would be a huge success especially in the small business market. It would be super cool and effective for a photographer to show his photos to his clients the iPhone style on the beautiful IPS iMac screen. Same thing can be said for a sales guy or any other client dealing business for that matter.
@fatslug Apple has 7.4% US market-share (although they are outside the top 5 globally). Should Toshiba, who they best in the US, not bother selling there; should Sony drop out of the game "because they do better at televisions".
Would this rumoured touchscreen definitely not have a multi-touch mouse with it? I don't know for sure as it doesn't exist yet, but I would wager that it would.
@Titanium Man I thought the general consensus (as if there could ever be consensus on here) was that below 30" 1080(i/p) wasn't necessary.
Holy shit, an engadget post about Apple that doesn't mention a Tablet?
IS this going to be the typical apple advertising. OMG nobody has ever done this. I present to you a touch screen desktop.
I really hope they dont present it that way considering a there are a lot of touch screen desktops already.
Woo, gorilla arms for everybody! (...or "zombie arms", depending on how you see it)
touch desktops have been around for a while and they suck. It's just not a good idea. The mouse and keyboard are more comfortable.
What if this all Apple had to announce next week. How disappointed would everyone be.
Once again, Apple catching up to the PC.
it's a response to the hundreds of people who walk into apple stores and, after touching the iphone screens and marveling at them, beeline straight for the imacs and touch the screen first, then come away dissapointed deep down.
They would need to significantly revamp the operating system. Try hitting those tiny tiny buttons with your finger (like the ones to close and minimize windows.) I can barely do it with the mouse!
@DavidVogt I have an HP TouchSmart running Windows 7. The computer sits on my kitchen benchtop, and has become the most used computer in the house. Windows 7 is fully touch enabled, and all commands are easy to access via touch, if the touch screen is large enough, such as a 22inch (forget the 10inches!). It takes longer to use a mouse to direct a cursor on the screen to the close button, than to touch the close button directly. And no, the button is not too small if the screen is large enough.
It is great for accessing the web and also multimedia such as my videos an music collection - much more intuitive using a touchscreen than using mouse or keyboard. Maybe you should try it out for an extended time. At first, I was sceptical, but after a while, I am now converted. I expect the Mac experience to be even better.
What I want to see is:
1.) the ability to wall mount this puppy (21.5" or 22")
2.) can we get an HDMI in/out
