ITG xpPhone gets a price, more pretty pictures
If you're China-based and you think there might be an xpPhone in your future, we've got some news for you: according to an email from ITG, the device will cost from 3,000 - 4,500 Chinese RMB (or about $400 - $650), depending on options. Funny how the world works -- put Windows XP on a laptop and it's yawn city, then you go and put the same OS on a handset and the thing is a bona fide curiosity. We also have a few new shots of the thing, and now we're we won't be stingy with 'em. Take a look below to get your Ya-Ya's out.

@fatslug
we will probably be using Windows 9 for our desktops before we can have windows 7 for our phones
now we're we won't be stingy with 'em
what?
*Homer Simpson voice*: Mmmmm...numeric keypad!
@Acey: Only if Windows 9 comes out this year, which of course it won't.
what if you uninstall the phone software??
"now we're we won't be stingy with 'em"
Uhh, what?
I'm prob the only one, but I'd love to own one of these. If it was a little faster it would be my dream phone. I'm big into creating custom windows interfaces in bblean and other alternative windows shells, so I'd have a blast using that tech to create an interface for my phone.
@math I've actually been holding out for pricing on this - it was this or the Milestone: and since the milestone is closer to Y6000 this might win out.
@math I think you hit the nail on the head.
A little faster, a little more ram, a higher resolution screen, a little thinner, a little less bezel.
For crying out loud, My Everun that I bought in 2007 was the same size, same screen resolution, same ram, same processor. Oh yeah, with the right 3G card, you could make and receive phone calls on it.
Not sure that this is progress.
so does it have a really small screen or is the device enormous?
Wonder if there is any way to get Android on that thing?
Hey someone finally put the d-pad on the correct side!!
@gentlefury
It is quite big see video, might still be pocket sized but not comfortably.

I really want a affordable pocketable full pc, the technology is about there, I wanted a oqo but it was to costly and I looked hard at the viliv s5, but want a hardware keyboard. This might fill the gap, hopefully they sell it with out the cellphone module, I hate paying for something I won't use do to high data charges.
@fatslug: Since all the words weer spelled correctly, I fear your proposed solution would be ineffective.
Call me when it's not made in China, the evil empire that is constantly tryng to attack US interests, us corporations, and US citizens. When will people take a stand and BOYCOT Chinese goods...well as best we can. I am a total tech geek and do my very best to not buy things made there. If everyone did this, it would send a message.
@fatslug isaid TRY dummie. read the post. i TRY my best. i have an htc nexus one...and yes, most of my gear is made in china, i KNOW...but when there is a CHOICE i do buy from american companies even though most still manufacture there. but lets be aware of their practices with regard to americans doing business THERE, and see how we give them the GREEN-LIGHT open door to sell whatever they want here. Maybe some of their own medicine would be good. Make them have brick and mortar presence in OUR country be4 they can sell their inferior shit here.
@mcosmi ummmm
why in the world would you ever do that?
The us is exploiting people all over the world, just as bad, and worse then china. Why dont you boycott like 90% of our products? stop buying food!!
atleast china is protecting its people to a certain extent from be ass fucked by the united states
if they didnt have such strong laws there we would be long fucking the chinese in the ass and ripping them for every penny that its worth.
luckly for them, the factory conditions in MOST places are much much better then working on a farm on an island and being paid 2 cents a day.
@Loonie : ...it is almost a given that any post commenting upon spelling will itself contain a typo.
this thing does look kinda cool
i wonder how fast it really is, i am hopefully going to china in the next few months and would be interested in checking this out.
fatslug man..
your alll over this post huh.
lol
@fatslug The interface can also switch between landscape and portrait views, and there's a unified look to it all. The xpPhone's maker—China's In Technology Group aka ITG—also says it will support direct access to the Outlook address book for contact management. More details: http://bit.ly/xp-phone-details-video
@fatslug Well according to this article on gsmarena it will get windows 7: http://www.gsmarena.com/itg_xpphone_gets_windows_7_5mp_camera_and_120gb_storage-news-1256.php
@fatslug
XP is dead?
Hrm, that's odd, because I'm using it right this minute on my Desktop -- and still receiving updates from Microsoft, to boot.
*shrugs*
All I ever wanted was an OQO phone, running real Windows. It's starting to look like my dreams are possible.
I wonder what kind of battery life it gets...
As a person with low vision I would buy this phone for the big screen. I wonder if you can change the screen resolution? There are many great new phones available now and more coming. But after trying Windows Mobile on a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 with 800 x 480 resolution on a 3.2 inch screen I need something bigger. However, being an SE fan I may still check out the X2a when it comes out. But, an X10a might be even better. For now Blackberry is the best phone I can find for people with low vision since you can set the fonts to 14 pt. Too bad all developers do not honor that setting and often choose to use very small fonts.
This company was quick to announce the xp phone a week before apple announces their probable portable tablet
@MrMixist you must have missed the 40 other xpPhone posts around here - they're just announcing pricing
@MrMixist wow, that is a actually about the most funny piece of fandom I have read today.
Xpphone was first announced at Computex on 2 June 2009. There have been about 10 Engadget articles in the past couple months about it.

I am sure that this phone and the iSlate are not really competing products. Different form factors, different OS, different theories about what type of hardware people want to carry around and what kind of software people want to run.
Kind of a stretch to try to connect the dots on this one.
That keyboard look delicious.
Now if only it ran an OS that didn't suck ass. Seriously, I'd take even an old version of Windows Mobile than any version of desktop Windows.
XP will not die. Long live XP!
I want and if I can get it any where between the chinese prices then I'm game.
Nice. On the customizing page of xpPhone they have a list of operating systems that can be installed on the device.. Windows 7 among those listed. http://xpphone.com/en/yingyong/Customized.html
What happens when you BSOD in the middle of your call?
What is this I see? An Apple supporter worried about competition from a little known Chinese company? Don't worry Apple will still be willing to control your phone and computing life as long as you are willing to buy their products. As for XP could it be that Microsoft has reached the pinnacle of their OS dominance? If this phone actually ships could it make Windows Mobile irrelevant? Could it even make any phone with a mobile OS irrelevant? Will Microsoft be smart enough to keep XP around and support it on phones........$$$$$$$$?
@aubreyq
dude omg what happened to windows 8???
It said "If your China based" that means no US release? I have been eagerly awaiting this product. I desperately need it for my currency trading on the go.
Maxkincaid:
No, it didn't say "If your China based"; it said "If you're China-based." Note the hyphen, but, more importantly, from a quite basic literacy standpoint: "Your" is possessive; "you're" is the contraction of "you are"--as we all learned in third grade. Don't mean to pile on you, personally, but the level of writing skills in this country--as evidenced by this and every other friggin' thread--is just appallingly, embarassingly, bad! But, to the point:
You will undoubtedly be able to snag this from a Chinese exporter upon release (hopefully a Hong Kong English-savvy affiliate, although if you check out ITG's website, I think you'll find that their English is far better than the norm)--perhaps even from a U.S. importer at some point, further down the road. In any event, the manufacturer is in Shenzhen, I believe, and although the stated market is worldwide (given the wide compatibility with 3G worldwide standards), "China first" is the watchword from ITG, who's NOT manufacturing this as an OEM for a western company, but is directly making and marketing the unit on its own; as is typical, then, the first hint of the unit's price range given is, not surprisingly, in Chinese currency, for that (huge) local market.
As an aside, I recently bought a PMP from a Hong Kong exporter with long experience catering to the west (mp4Nation), and have absolutely no regrets going that route for that product...and if I must buy this unit directly from China--particularly from ITG directly, eliminating the middleman, if possible--I'll happily do that, too. YMMV. But as a "currency trader," surely you can see the cost-lowering benefits of dealing with the Chinese directly, hmmm?! (Warranty issues are a different matter, but this thing weighs only ~400 gms, and would be cheap to ship back, if necessary).
