Verizon unveils new FiOS bundles with symmetrical 35Mbps pipes, heftier ETFs
As expected, Verizon is rolling out a new line of FiOS bundles for this perennially broadband-starved nation, and bumping up its early termination fees in the process. The traditional ETF for the installation-heavy service has been at $179, but now it's rocketing to as high as $360 to break from these fur-lined shackles. The new bundles of course don't skimp on the goodies, particularly with the 35Mbps up / 35Mbps down symmetrical service that should be a boon to HD video chats, big torrents and medium-sized torrents. For a limited time you can get into the "Prime" triple-play bundle (TV, internet, phone) for $90 a month, though that price will bump up to $110 a month after a year. Sweet enough to calm your fears about a $360 early cancellation penalty? Verizon sure seems to hope so -- no matter what sort of condescending looks the FCC shoots its way.

Now if Verizon Wireless would just get on-board with high-bandwidth at lower prices all would be good at my 'big-red' house.
@Why should I have all the fun
Ummm paying $69/mo for internet (I have it bundled with TV) at a "discounted" "bundled" rate with comcast; total monthly bill with no phone is $150. So this triple play for $99 w/ 5x the bandwidth looks friggin cheap to me still no Fios in my area though. They would get my entire suburb south of Seattle if they were here.
@spodee
I don't think you understand.
He agrees with the point you've just made.
Verizon Wireless is not the same as Verizon Residential/Business.
@spodee
Too bad Verizon sold off Washington state to Frontier.
Too bad that Verizon stops the fiber build out in June.
If Fiber isn't in your area now, you're going to keep on waiting indefinitely.
If only fios had nfl Sunday ticket
@MasterTick
FiOS has the REDZONE channel which is awesome. I had the Sunday Ticket with Direct TV and 99% of the time I was watching the redzone channel they have anyways.
Still no FIOS at my place. Hurry up VZ, can't wait to ditch DSL!
@DirtyVegas Yeah, seriously, FiOS needs to be available in more places. I think it might be unavailable in some places because AT&T is the telco in those areas, but I hope eventually they get around those problems. I don't even know what I would do with 35mbps up/down, but it would be awesome.
@iofthestorm
Ahh fuck, so I'm screwed because ATT is the telco in my area...
Now, if Verizon would just buy AT&T so the rest of us can have decent service.
@kcmurphy88
Yeah, they'd really be motivated to increase speeds with one of their competitors gone.
@Konrad
AT&T and Verizon residential services to compete in any way. Well done.
@Konrad
Only if I'm willing to move do they compete. My location has been AT&T (old and new) and _not_ Verizon since about 1920.
Or do they have two pure phone companies where you live? Here I have AT&T phone (copper twisted pair) or Time-Warner Cable (coax). Or DirecTV, but not much fiber there, either.
i supposed he's here to fix her sink?
@va jj
Cue porn music...
@va jj
Awww, and he's so non-threatening.
The last FiOS guy that came to my house was 200lbs of muscle, had a skull tattoo on his forearm and hadn't shaved in three days.
@Why should I have all the fun
Cue porn music.
jeez thats fast..you know i rather prefer verizon than any other carrier here in new york..i work for cablevision and frankly cablevision sucks balls..NO ONE GET IT PLZ lol..we use private contracters to install service so most of the time its done half assed..i get 25mbps/25mbps and not one problem with fios so far..also i think verizon wireless just changed some of there pricing plans
@Jvalen
You work for Cablevision? What department?
Inbound sales here and while the price/speed does sound alluring even to me I would never get in bed with VZ even if CVC fired me. With their preposterous ETF's and shady billing....
I can't tell you how many customers I get saying "Get me the hell out of VZ"
Still though, I will admit...this will definitely make the Cable Co's sweat. I hope they step their game up.
@kiddluck i work for optimum online and optimum voice level 2 tech support.TSG at the jericho location basically. I take it you work at the same location? lol anyway i hear so many complaints i guess its kinda etched inside in me that cablevision service is kinda bad at least the installation part of it. Ive seen some installations that are pretty damn terrible. Wires all over the place and stuff but meh lol.
@Jvalen i have cablevision and i find there service better and way cheaper than verizon. i have a 101/50 connection which is cheaper and more bandwidth than verizons 50/? connection thats over a $100 a month. couldnt be happier
@Jvalen Not sure what sort of complaints you're getting but everyone I know has been more than happy with their optimum services. Over the past few years I've hopped between a few apartments and whether or not I got a CVC tech or a contractor, the service has always been clean and professional. The CVC techs are better at fixing problems but I don't think the contractors are really sent out for diagnosing signal issues.
@JiveMasterT could just be my experience working there. I mean I know I only get a small majority of the customers out there but I've heard some horror stories. I'm sure vz has there's to
..
@Jvalen My Experience here in TSG Shelton screams of whiny New Yorkers that have no clue how good they have it, here the best I can get is ATT's U-Verse 16/2 service and that can't hold up to Boost, it's that or comcast and you know how bad they are
still annoyed that I can't get more than 3Mbs (yet pay for more).
@nrb
8d/3u here in Seattle advertised at 15d. Feel your pain
@spodee 6d/.6u. 16d advertised. It's bullshit where I live. I get less speed than the tier below me.
@nrb
o how i agree with you, its sad i cant get a decent speed EVER
Her pipes need to be cleaned out.....
verizon sucks balls....the kings of bait and switch
That sucks for you verizion customers i get municipal FTTH and its doesn't have a contract.
You know that would be really nice if I could even get their service. Why don't they focus on spreading their footprint a bit?
The relatively weak state of American broadband, and the extraordinarily high prices we pay for it, sadden me.
In Hong Kong, you can get 100Mbps for $13/month. See http://www.hkbn.net/bb1000/ for example.
@UUCP If I was a telco and only had to focus on ONE CITY I think I could provide such service for that price. I mean you hook up one large high rise and you have just covered hundreds if not thousands of people. Also Hong Kong only has 7 million people... so like the size of NYC.
Much more difficult covering thousands and thousands of miles let alone millions and millions of customers. Just paying for the' right of way' to run the cable is insanely expensive.
Fiber to the home is much more complicated over a huge land mass... not to mention the crazy rules and regulations around telcos in the USA and how they have to negoiate rights on a township by township basis.
@LanMark
it's just a lack of competition that's to blame if you ask me, DSL is no longer capable of keeping up with Cable, and all the Cable companies are pretty much allied together
@LanMark
The population density of Manhattan is more than four times that of Hong Kong, yet the best residential broadband available here is 50Mbps for $140/month, while in Hong Kong you can get 100Mbps for $13/month.
The fact that it might cost a lot of money to provide broadband to Kansas doesn't explain this. Only lack of competition can.
It sounds really good, if you're one of the few that can actually get it.
(Yes, I'm bitter. Why do you ask?)
Does Verizon have a map for that?
@EWTHeckman
no but dslreports does.
http://www.dslreports.com/gmaps/fios
@credo
Thanks.
Looks a lot like ATT&T's 3G map, don't it?
::evil, sarcastic grin::
@EWTHeckman
No offense, but did you seriously just try to be coy while comparing 3G Wireless and FTTH Fios?
I used to work ATT b2b sales and am still an ATT mobility customer but...really?
Wow.
@Toradora
I've been wanting to get FiOS for at least 4 years now. I don't live in the boonies.
In fact, at one point several years ago, I was told by reps that they were going to be installing it in my local CO "shortly", only to be told a few months later that there "wasn't enough room" for the equipment, despite the fact that they had just finished expanding the place.
I just think it's ironic that Verizon is (appropriately) busting on ATT&T for their limited 3G coverage, while their FiOS coverage is in worse shape. Even worse, they're advertising it heavily in areas (such as mine) where they're apparently not even making any installation efforts. Nor do they seem to be working on expanding FiOS coverage nearly as hard as ATT&T is working on expanding 3G and/or 4G coverage.
I just realized I've been mistyping AT&T's name. It wasn't intentional. (Doh!)
So no pricing on the 35/mbs speed? I just checked my account and it's not available yet. Actually, all the options there to switch to are not there as well right now. Hopefully they'll add it soon. 25mbps is starting to feel slow, hehe. I started with their 10/2, switched to 15/5, then to 25/15. I've not had a single issue so far and regularly get the entire amount of bandwitch promised, sometimes even more.
The only times I don't get the full bandwidth relate to issues on the "other end". Not all sites are on server with such a good pipe.
@jonyah let me clarify. I have ONLY FIOS internet. TV isn't offered here in houston, so their bundles are of no use to me. They only have pricing on the bundles. I'd like to know the price of the 35/35 ala-carte.
@jonyah
Sorry to bug you. I was wondering where you were in Houston that you had access to FIOS? I had heard it was in Baytown and League City but was interested if it was in the loop.
@Firewall As you expected I am in League City (Victory Lakes to be precise) and I'll never move away as I could never go back now after having FIOS. I've also been trying to figure out where I can get a business FIOS connection. I'd like to rent possibly a small room/closet to house servers on a FIOS connection in the area.
I wish FIOS was available in my area. Been told there is no plans to bring it to my state. :( Verizon has no love for Michigan.
I'd easily switch to FiOS if they would just hurry the fuck up in my area. They've had a sign outside their branch office for 3 years now saying "Verizon FiOS, coming soon!" and I'm STILL waiting!
I would care about this if they rolled their dam service out in my area!
