Verizon unveils new FiOS bundles with symmetrical 35Mbps pipes, heftier ETFs
As expected, Verizon is rolling out a new line of FiOS bundles for this perennially broadband-starved nation, and bumping up its early termination fees in the process. The traditional ETF for the installation-heavy service has been at $179, but now it's rocketing to as high as $360 to break from these fur-lined shackles. The new bundles of course don't skimp on the goodies, particularly with the 35Mbps up / 35Mbps down symmetrical service that should be a boon to HD video chats, big torrents and medium-sized torrents. For a limited time you can get into the "Prime" triple-play bundle (TV, internet, phone) for $90 a month, though that price will bump up to $110 a month after a year. Sweet enough to calm your fears about a $360 early cancellation penalty? Verizon sure seems to hope so -- no matter what sort of condescending looks the FCC shoots its way.

I would have no problems with EFT's if, if, they were subject to reversal, being that if the instigator of the EFT fails to meet any of the minimums advertised that they must pay the customer the EFT.
Who can hit more than 1.5 MB/s on torrents? Usenet is one of the only places where this would be useful, even most online backup services have upload speed caps/limits.
@10nisman94
I can hit 3.0 MB/s on well seeded torrents from private trackers with the fios 25 megabit speed tier. I just upgraded to 35/35 and I will expect to hit 4.2-4.3 MB/s.
@10nisman94
Clearly you don't have fios. I guess its part of the protocol but the faster you upload the faster you download it seems.

My speeds are so high I forgot which package I was paying for. Almost looks like I already have 35/35.
@10nisman94 torrents are funny thing. speed is 99% dependent on who's sharingn and who you're connected to. try using a direct download service like megashares or megaupload (stay away from rapidshare, their limits suck). I always get my full speed and never use more than 4 connections (torrents required hundreds of connections for decent speed and make it impossible to surf at the same time).
just realized why my account doesn't show the upgrade packages, my current contract isn't quite up yet. need to call and find out why i'm still at 25/15 instead of 25/25 though.
@10nisman94
Anyone? At my university I hit 8MB/s on bittorrent.
Anyone know where I could get a chair like the one that broad is sitting on?
dear Big Red. please install into Indianapolis. thank you.
Just so everyone is aware the $360 ETF goes down $15 every month that you have it so the ETF isn't that bad
Broadband should be next to free in cost, server maintenance and upkeep costs are next to none (I spent a better part of my professional career managing servers for a huge network in the southeast.) So long as you don't have monkeys handling the servers and fucking up the super delicate super expensive fiber it pretty much runs itself. The only cost associated is on the front end. After that you just pay the techs and the electricity for running them and cooling.
I just called and upgraded my package (I get phone/internet/tv) to the one with 35/35. The package also includes every premium channel.
The monthly is basically what my 20/20 triple bundle was after the discounts ran out, which is ok for me price/features-wise.
They explained the ETF and frankly, I couldn't care less. FiOS has been great for me. There have been problems with billing and service, but all of them were resolved quickly. Basically the only way I'd cancel my service would be if I moved. The rep explained that if I moved to another place where FiOS had a presence, the account would just be transferred. If I moved somewhere with no service, then they'd waive the ETF. It's not like I'm going to go back to crappy Comcast and their bandwidth cap, peak slowdowns, and worse TV picture.
I got lucky, Bell aliant decided to use my city as a test install. They are in the process of running fibre to the whole city. It's a small city mind you, even by Canadian standards. It's also not that cheap, but it's better than Rogers cable. Uncapped & unthrottled.
20d/5u with HDTV, non PVR is $149. There is a 30/10 option as well. They gave me 3 months free PVR for Xmas and a 22" 720P Sharp LCD TV for signing up. Now I can game and download at the same time, while my wife and kids surf without LAG.
Fibre rocks
Here I am paying $100 (after taxes) to Comcast for Phone and Internet (12Mbps down) and no TV. Fuck monopolies.
When I got my install a year ago, the tech said Verizon was losing a ton of money on each installation. They're dropping like $1000 worth of equipment into your basement or garage, not to mention the equipment in the street and the half-day of tech time to do the installation. Perhaps the economy took a ding out of their subscription projections, but it's not surprising to see them charging people a cancellation fee for tying up the equipment and the installer. The alternative is to pay for the equipment up front -- then everyone complains about the high price. You can't have it both ways.
WHY IS THERE STILL NO FiOS IN UPPER MANHATTAN?!?!
sorry for the caps but man that pisses me off.
To all that seem frustrated at not being able to get FIOS what would you leave for me to say I have been watching FIOS when it was first tested in a small town in TEXAS Keller I think that’s the spelling .when they finally came to NY it was to come in from long island and work its way up but when it reached the town that one of cablevision board of directors live in he did not approve it then they went to Westchester not sure what problems they went through there but they started jumping from town-town hood – hood I lived in crown heights and could not get it so I moved into a hood that has it midwood now the excuse is that they are waiting for the landlord my uncle is the super and gave me the ok for install but VZ will not just do they want the whole building
So for those that know they are not getting it stop crying cause it is hanging outside my window and I cant have it
Still no verizon fios in nyc (Queens), my uncle has it in long island. But I'm still suffering with time warner crappy service. Due to compression every channel gets artifacts, the upgrade menu is laggy as hell (like a turtle going up hill carrying weights)
My complaint about this, as well as with all Engadget articles, is the self-referential walled garden readers are confronted with. All product links refer back to Engadget, very rarely to manufacturer pages (when they exist) for the items being discussed. Google and Bing probably don't mind, though.
What if there service people suck on the phone and your bill confuses the heck out of you regularly (verizons additional service fees are mind blowing). What if you call and you are forced to pay $80 for that call out with problems and you've had enough...
Well if you want to cancel, what if is replaced with Verizons (just like sat) $360 ETF (one giant FU) for canceling.
ETF' should be illegal.
oh ETF's are/were illegal?

There's not enough money in the world to get me to go back to Verizon after the 10 years of hell they put me through with phone service and dial up Internet.
My Comcast service has been good and FIOS is in my neighborhood now but when you add up all the equipment costs Verizon is still about $20/mo more for the same service.
@Onazuka Define "service" No 7 o'clock slowdowns on FiOS, but if that isn't a problem in your area and the TV is decent (minimal artifacts), then stick w/ cable.
@10nisman94 Service for me is defined as: Comcast came into my neighborhood in 2003 and they said I was connected to a new fiber run. My Internet connection has been excellent. I think I've had one outage in 7 years and that was because lightning hit a tree and blew out the cable box. A very professional Comcast technician came out first thing the next day (Saturday) and had my cable working again before 10am.
I don't ever notice slowdowns. I even regularly rent "HD" movies from iTunes and watch them on my Apple TV. Movies are ready less then 30 seconds after I order them and never stop/pause due to downloading. TV has been good. I have no complaints. I don't use the phone service but my alarm is connected to it and it has worked every time I've had a false alarm or a test.
Comcast's prices have been relatively decent with the triple play they offered. They even called and offered a deal for the next year right before my triple play was up. Some people nearby have gone to Verizon and I have seen what they are paying and priced it myself a few time and it would still be about $20/mo a month for me to get that same service from Verizon.
Of course I don't like Comcast's DVR, but Verizon's isn't much better, and I record off the air to my Apple TV and use iTunes and On Demand which minimizes the DVR use.
wtf???? I'm currently paying $145/month for tv and 18Mbps dl x 1.5Mbps ul!!! God I hate AT&T!
COME ON VERIZON! I SO NEED THIS SERVICE!!
Wow I didn't know internet tv/internet providers even had ETF's. Shockingly my U-Verse doesn't have that that I know of anyway. What's the required term to keep fios?
I would sign up for this in a heartbeat if it was available where I live. I'm paying $135.00 for just internet and full boat cable. That's 7 meg down / 280k up with a 30 Gig cap.
I would love to get FiOS because I'm sure it would destroy my Time Warner Cable connection; alas, they don't offer it in downtown Cleveland.
I hate how it's not in ANY city at this point really (I've heard stuff about NYC, but that's rumor as far as I know). Their rollout plan seems to be "suburbs, suburbs, and some more suburbs." The same suburbs that are ruining this nation...they deserve nothing.
Verizon FIOS isn't available where I live, but I'm curious, how much would it cost to get service, including installation WITHOUT any evil contracts? I don't believe in contracts with a business, I believe in earning a customer, not binding them!!!!!
I'd rather be a free consumer!
I so, so much agree with you, screw contracts!!!!! They have no motivation to keep the customer happy at all if they are BINDED by a contract.
I'm old fashioned, I believe in EARNING a customer!
I would love it if this was available in Columbia, SC. I would switch in a minute fro Time Warner. I am paying $115 a month for 12/300 Internet and Cable TV now.
i love it

Don't buy FiOS!
When I first signed up, Verizon told us someone had to come to the house and we had to be there.
The first 5 visits, Verizon did not show nor call to cancel. 5 wasted vacation days waiting on FiOS.
After a year, the billing is still not fixed. After many phone calls with more than 2 hour wait times; its just not worth fixing anymore.
Your time will be wasted. The service times out often. Its not nearly as good as advertised. On demand often crashes. The FiOS box crashes almost everyday; and anything that should be recorded after the crash is not until you restart the box.
You cannot pause the system from any other room except the main terminal. You cannot see HDTV on any TV except for the one connected to the main box. If you have two HDTVs, one is wasted.
Save your money and go elsewhere.
I got the 15/5 Internet plan n when u run speedtest I get 25/5-8 usually
