ReCellular will recycle your phone and donate all proceeds to Haiti disaster relief
It might've been hard to watch pictures of the latest natural disaster striking the island of Haiti recently, but lending a hand in the relief effort shouldn't be. If you've got an older cellphone -- functioning or otherwise -- batteries, chargers, or other accessories, ReCellular wants to hear from you. The cellphone recycling company has launched a Phones for Haiti program, whereby you can donate your unwanted handsets and rest assured that 100 percent of the revenue raised from them will go to helping Haiti survivors rebuild. Partnering with the American Red Cross, ReCellular will even pay for the shipping of your castoff electronics, so really, how much easier do you want it?

I guess this would be quite a worthy cause. I urge everyone to empty out their closets and find their old dumbphones - afterall! We're all on our great, hot, powerful, brand new smartphone! Lets help those when we can! And they do need our help... :)
What are you going to donate? 2 of my old Sony Ericsson phones, and my HTC Magic for me!
Define "rest assured".
Sorry, I am a sceptic.
I'd rather wait till there is a plan for all this money, rather than blindly giving it -right now-, which won't help anyone -right now-. I don't mean to downplay this horrible event in any way, but throwing cash won't make the dead come back alive, or make their tiny airport accept shipments any faster. I'm always glad to help out when I can, but that doesn't mean that the money donated will be put to good use.
Is this being run by Wycleff Jean?
@LAY
What does that have to do w/ anything? How insensitive can you jackasses be? Disasters strike ANYWHERE at ANYTIME. Tomorrow it may be your turn.
Just donate if you want to help; recycling your phone means sending it to India or rural China so that kids can pick through it for $5 a month.
That's what I was thinking, but it will have to be disposed of eventually so doing it now at least has a fringe benefit, so you could - assuming you really don't need it and it's busted, otherwise it might be better to donate the phone itself so people can use it as a phone in poor areas, and you save on pollution by the industry not having to make a new one.
I imagine a phone can be very handy in places where people have to walk rather than having cars, and cellphone support is pretty widespread even in poor countries because the rich managers of help organizations and the posh journalists and even posher UN officials and CIA bastards and spam lords need them in their marble palaces. Oops I vented a bit there.
has anyone else noticed the spawn of people trying to gather other peoples money and donating it in thier name, everywhere i looks its "buy our products and well donate, aka give us money and well give a few to those people and then write it off in our name.
Seems Haiti is the hottest marketing tool everywhere in the world.. Sad..
A ton of people have moved from perfectly good dumbphones, prematurely, to get into new, sexy smartphones. These phones will never see the light of day again, for these people. Don't question when and how the money comes together, just do it.
@wimaxwax
Oh, right - great logic there. Don't care if the money actually makes it there, just do it because someone tells you to!
I hate this kind of "reasoning." I see it more and more in this country.
@paul34 In this case...yes...the logic works. An unused cell phone depreciates so much that the time it takes to find out where its going and how it is flipped isn't worth what it means to the whole effort. I wasn't talking about ALL charities. Just this one.
Give $ not old phones and get the profit seeking or cost causing middle man out of the middle!
Listen folks. ReCellular is a real live company, take a look at their website before assuming we don't exist. I know, I work here. There are many people besides just the people in Haiti this effort helps. There are people like myself and about 300 others who are employed by a company who recycles phones in an effort to help charities and businesses. We've given over $20 million to charities through our efforts. Of course there is profit for the company when they can sell the phones but, without it, they could not employ all the people they do, and we would be more stiffs looking for a job. Haiti is one of many efforts assisted by ReCellular, and yes, they do receive the actual money for the phones. Additionally, we do not send phones overseas for little kids to pick through, nor do they end up in landfills. Do your homework and you will see. We are partnered with some of the top carriers and the charities they work with as well. We didn't get those opportunities by selfishly thinking only of our profit. The owner is a great guy whose head is in the right place, trying to help the environment along the way, it is one of our core values here.
