Ready to get your Bing on, iPhone owners? That curious little Microsoft search engine you shrugged off just a few months ago could become a mainstay in your daily routine if
BusinessWeek's sources are correct. According to a pair of persons familiar with the matter, Apple and Microsoft are discussing dropping Google as the default search engine on Apple's somewhat popular handset -- talks that have been underway for "weeks," apparently.
BW paints the move as further evidence of an escalating rivalry between Apple and Google. In fact, one
BW source claims that, "Microsoft is now a pawn in that battle." No doubt, the once cozy relationship has seemingly fractured with Google CEO Eric Schmidt
vacating Apple's board and Apple recently snapping up
Lala and
Quattro Wireless -- acquisitions that some analysts see as defensive measures against a
rapidly encroaching Google. Isn't competition fun?
I almost hope this does happen. Perhaps with the iPhone default search issue out of the way Google will finally have the balls to implement multitouch in Android.
China mandated Apple to make a version of the iPhone without Wi-Fi.
im a apple fan and i use a lot google search engine for COMPUTER but i think bing mobile version is real good to search the right page for a mobile device i think there will be any problem with that change of search engine.
OMG, Bing is so terrible... Unless this default option is removable it would seriously hamper my desire to get the next gen of iPhone. :S
@sh0nuff
Sure it would....
"BW paints the move as further evidence of an escalating rivalry between Apple and Google"
And Microsoft isn't a bigger rival...?
100% apple 100% of the time, eh?
I'm all for more choices. But if apple forces me to use a search engine that is (for now) inferior to google, I cant help it but hope that google sticks it to apple by dropping iphone support for maps and youtube - would make it that much easier for me to replace my 3G with something not from apple this year...
isn't that "bundling"?
maybe Google will unlock multi-touch on the Moto Droid now...
Google ads are everyone and they're annoying. I'm all for BING.
Yuck, I wonder who is binging who to get this dorsal dongle of a search engine to replace google on Apple devices?
Funny how on those 'what you might have missed' reports on engadget you see any apple article is A:WAYS getting the most interest by a huge margin, and yet people wonder why engadget has a good deal of apple stuff, duh.
I like Google's results and features better than Bing. So do 85% of internet users. And Apple and Google have always seemed to be best of friends, Apple and Microsoft have always been rivals. Why would Apple do this?
Wonder how EU will react to this.....They will probably ask for a ballot screen to select the default search engine...
I think this is Microsoft not publicly (but subtly) admitting that they are way behind on the mobile space. Its a covert admission that they won't be able to catch up. Instead they'll focus on other ventures that are more profitable (increasing Bing market share, which is also pushing Silverlight market share).
Of course, they'll still compete in the mobile market place but this shows they have no major plans of catching up any time soon.
Thoughts?
Dear Steve,
What type of politics and positioning are playing now? This is the same methodology that got us in trouble with Iraq and Iran in the first place!!!
Stick to the original plan man!!!! Kill off MS!!!! You know what will happen if you give your enemy ammunition to fight off another enemy right? A few years later, you'll be fighting your new "friend" and will have to beg your old enemy to help you....UGH!!!!
Google is now invading Microsoft's and Apple's territory with Android, and ChromeOS. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are putting their heads together to unite against a common enemy.
Android Phones VS Windows Mobile, iPhoneOS
ChromeOS, Android Tablets VS Windows 7 Tablets, New Apple Device
My opinion is goolge beats bing. I truly believe bing sucks. With bing I like how it can solve equations. But if u type in something like training puppy some random thing will pop up like cooking hamburgers. Google is ontop and I don't see them stepping down.
