Microsoft's Twitter chatter suggests Danger is up to something -- Pink drawing near?
The other day, we happened to catch a tag on a tweet reading "from Danger." No biggie, really -- Sidekicks have had Twitter integration for a while now. Here's the thing, though: tweeting from a Sidekick plugs a "from Sidekick" on the end, not Danger -- and what's more, the Danger text links to Microsoft's home page rather than Sidekick's. It's starting to get juicy, right? Anyhow, these "from Danger" tweets have really picked up across dozens of accounts since December or so, to the point where we've got a constant cacophony of 'em today -- possibly a sign that these guys have a product in the works that's nearing completion.
Danger... new product... Microsoft... ah, that's right, Pink! We haven't had any fresh intel on the alleged lovechild of Redmond's acquisition in some time -- it could be dead, for all we know -- but there's definitely something going on inside Microsoft's labs that involves Danger's legacy tech and headcount. Whatever it is, they've got a predisposition for the hashtag "#tmdp" (it used to be #tmd and changed at some point) -- we've no idea what it stands for, but we're curious to get your opinions. Anyhow, is this what we're going to see next month at MWC? Is WinMo 7 going to take a back seat yet again? Will it be a one-two punch where they reveal a whole slew of Danger and WinMo stuff at once? Heck, are they the same frigging product? Who knows, but hopefully we'll have it all sorted out within a few weeks' time.

Can't wait.
@untitled I can't either. I use Zune HD and love it. Hope they have learned something from it.
@engado
My next phone may be a winmo phone, so I'm definitely interested in this. I hope MS can finally do something that's worthy of the 'game-changer' moniker here on engadget.
@a dumb cat
why
@uck Well why not?
Hype training is starting to pick up with all these rumours and implications.
@GON
Well Windows Mobile 7 sessions were just announced for MIX10:
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/01/20/windows-mobile-7-session-at-mix-2010-announced/
@Crapolin
Yeah I saw that. Practically everyday we get more hyped up for this with people teasing. Guess Microsoft wants the people talking.
If you were testing the ability of your brand new super-secret project to tweet surely you'd be a little more subtle than having having a go at the winmo7 guys that work in your office. Unless this is one of those "semi-controlled leaks".
Does that mean Sidekick owners are about to lose their data again? ;)
@MikeZ It means their working on an entirely new phone so they'll have a fresh set of data to loose :)
I would be interested as long as it doesn't look like those crappy mock-ups that found their way on the internets back in August or so...
@Rick James
I thought those looked pretty nice to be honest. The stuff they teased in the tag videos were also interesting.
@xberxinfinity
Just a word of advice, don't do like I did and goto jail for it.
My guess is #tmdp stands for T-Mobile Danger Prototype, and #tmd stands for T-Mobile Danger. Seeing as T-Mobile handles Sidekick sales, and would be the likely carrier to launch the new product.
@v12spd I was just about to say exactly the same thing.
@v12spd Most likely that is T-Mobile Danger Pink.
@v12spd
Teenage Mutant Dinja Purple!!
@Glodokboy
Terp Merp Derp Perp!
Winmo7 team isn't sharing their donuts?! No wonder there's chaos in the world!
@LiQuiDFuSioN They could get donuts from the Android team if they wanted to.
@FallenArms3 No need. The android team shares the donut source.
TMDP = Apple Tablet? Why not, that seems to be the answer to everything :).
@The Shadow
T-Mobile Danger Phone!
@glenskey The Microsoft Danger Phone
Probably not relevant at all, but I thought it was interesting. Danger's building in Palo Alto California was rebranded to Microsoft just a couple weeks ago. MS seems to be rearing them in as an internal entity rather than just an owned property.
@iryan
which means they're preparing to lose lots of money and live off Windows lock-in revenues for the next 10 years?
@Wesscoast Because Microsoft is terrible at making money right? It's not like they're the most powerful software company in the world.
Why will no comment I write appear
@Cy Starkman
Are you clicking the left mouse button or the right?
Prepare to be amazed...
I hope
Team Microsoft-Danger-Pink?
Let's get dangerous!
If Team WinMo7 would stop stuffing their faces with donuts and start coding, it might actually get released this century.
@Bandigolo
Funny thing is we said the same thing last decade.
@xberxinfinity
ew.
Wow. Something tells me Microsoft just got Internet access.
Woot Woot 1996 FTW!
Welcome to the party guys! You will not believe the por...oops gotta go.
#tmd = That’s My Donut
#tmdp = That’s My Donut, Punk!
I’ve counted 5 different users making posts from Danger and following or being followed by each other. One of which (@pbernard) says on his website that he works at Microsoft and “is involved in a number of initiatives regarding mobile and embedded devices.”
MWC couldn't come soon enough!
30 comments for a Windows Phone rumor...
OVER 400 comments on the Apple iSlate rumor...
Yeah engadget haters engadget sure is biased...
@TheRogueFFAngel
They don't allow comments from IE7 or 8 in compatibility mode, and don't allow ranking comments from any version of IE.
Could this bias be contributing to the turnout you see in the comments on MS related stories?
@TheRogueFFAngel: I think the Apple haters really take up a majority of those 400 posts in the iSlate post.
Most big Apple posts are just filled with various bickering comment threads.
As for Windows Phone rumor comments, the last one got 167 comments. Thats not too bad, I guess.
The Microsoft Dumb Phone = TMDP
The Microsoft Dumbphone = TMD
@LiQuiDFuSioN
Of course we're sharing our doughnuts, they're just not sponsored by the Build Lab any longer so you need to hunt them down in another building :P
TMDP = This Miserable Device is a Pile
The truth is much less entertaining than some of these guesses:
Truly Madly Deeply Pink
The phrase is plastered all over the studio in Redmond and is one of Roz Ho's (de)motivational catch phrases.
doesn't anyone remember this rumor floating around from a while ago?
http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2009/10/05/microsofts-project-pink-might-be-dead-in-the-water/
in brief, the source seems to believe that microsoft never really intended to ship any "project pink" phones in the first place, and that the prototypes they've crapped out so far are next to useless.
i'm hoping for a new sidekick just as much as the next danger-faithful, but let's be frank for a minute -- sidekicks are always about one generation behind the current crop of phones, and with the advent of 3G on t-mobile it's long past time for them to get rid of the proxy browsing model they've been using since the beginning, and put a decent web browser on it for a change. the ui is heavenly and the keyboard is downright unbeatable. the whole os is quick as can be, despite the screen flip animation lagging once in a while, but those phones have always been fantastic in more ways than not.
all i'm saying is, let's not get too excited or we'll just end up being disappointed.
I don't care as long as whatever Pink/Danger/WinMo7 news means more app, third-party apps for my Zune HD.
I just hope that the apps for Pink are cheaper than winmo apps. That was partly the reason I changed to iPhone
impossible that this is project pink
i think that if they had something this big, they would have said something at ces
Also, if they run windows mobile, doesn't this create the same android-nexus one-google conundrum
The Monsterous Donut People
who cares
