The Space Bar sleekly covers up your grimy keyboard, adds a few USB ports to boot
Let's face it -- there's at least an 89.4 percent chance that you'd be utterly embarrassed to let your mother, SO or inner neat-freak inspect your keyboard. Years of wear and tear have cleared the way for minuscule portions of delicacies, follicles and all manners of foreign objects to make their home just beneath the vowels you smash on a daily basis, and considering that cleaning said keyboard or buying a new one is far too difficult, the Quirky community has a better solution. The Space Bar ($42 in a 3-pack) is an aluminum keyboard cover that can slip right over 'boards that measure 18-inches wide and 1.5-inches deep; aside from covering things up, it also provides six easily accessible USB 2.0 ports. Too bad there's no germ-nixing UV light on the underside, but there's always hope for v2.0.
Update: The pricing has since been updated -- it's $42 for each.

To save money I'm just going to use an old plank of wood and glue my USB hub to it then set it on my keyboard when I'm not using it.
Now it does exactly what this thing does....answers on a postcard please.
Better yet, just take a vacuum with a brush attachment and use that to clean out your keyboard. Nothing is simpler or quicker.
is it worth to buy?
I already spent way too much time wondering where this thing is supposed to go when I actually want to use the keyboard. Especially when those 6 USB ports will turn it into a tentacle monster. We live in a world where even bad ideas make it to market.
Thanks all who have posted responses about why it would be useful, I can now certainly see the appeal of the product but again I would hope it would be strong enough to perch the monitor on top... I still don't get the pack of three idea though
I get $.02 every time someone buys this thing.. thanks engadget!
@l3it3r
You're not getting a thing then.
I just throw my dirty keyboard under my bed at the end of the day. That's where all my dirty stuff goes.
What kind of idiot sees the pictures of this item and instead of thinking "monitor stand/USB hub," thinks "keyboard cover?"
crapgadget?
Make it tall enough that I can type while keeping it over the keyboard, and I'd be happy. No more cat typing!
i dont care what all these haters are saying, its a great idea( even though the originall/intended use is stupid) but for me as a musician i can place a small middi keyboard on top and put inront of an iMac and have a nice 3layer setup with an added 5 USB Ports( one of ur original ports is taken up by plugging in the dock in the first place), but i must agree, for the price is way too much for the basic use, 20 bux and i'd buy it.

P.S. it's difficult to get a point across without the letter "u" without sounded brain dead.
Good. I could use it to put my plate with sandwiches while watch some podcasts :)
$40 brick. This is just stupid. This thing is down there on the level of Peek.
