YouTube nabs live sports streaming rights
Alright, before you jump on your sofa Tom Cruise-style, these rights don't relate to the NBA, NFL or anything else quite so exciting to the Western viewer. Google's master plan for getting into the cutthroat sports broadcasting world is to start with... Indian Premier League cricket. Oh sure, you don't know what that even is yet, but plenty of people in the Eastern hemisphere live and die by the stuff and YouTube's slated to start broadcasting live matches from March of this year. What should be tantalizing for all of us is that Google seems to be taking this as a pilot venture which, if successful, could be the harbinger of plenty more live streaming content to come. Cricket at the vanguard of modern content distribution -- who could've expected that?

Lots of people in the Western hemisphere like cricket. It was invented in England, and in occidental countries, is most popular in Australia and New Zealand (where I live!). Although I doubt many would be interested in the Indian Premier League...
yeah, crickets is fun. taste pretty bad though
no thanks google we are good with http://www.justin.tv/pasfasfa#r=
@wdansey Since when are Australia and New Zealand in the western hemisphere?
@wdansey actually, those people will be very interested in the IPL, which runs for only a short period of time and features the top players from the different test cricket playing nations around the world, alongside plenty of indian players. it is very popular internationally, so this is a big coup.
@tinytom ooops. Didn't see that word occidental. Actually I did, but I had NO idea what it meant, so I ignored it... standard procedure, no?
@tinytom Since they were colonised by the British in the 18th/19th centuries. And don't try to tell me that England isn't a western country!
@heliotrope Yeah that's true. In fact, a New Zealand cricketer just signed up for $1 million contract for two weeks in the IPL.
@wdansey
Next (or future) IPL is going to held in US of A too, so it'll be all over the world soon
@avis Really? I couldn't find anything on that ... where did you hear that? And why would the INDIAN Premier League ever be held in a country other than India?
@wdansey
Here is a news link, after all, why USA? may be, it's all for money!
http://cricketnext.in.com/news/ipl-to-reach-usa-in-18-months/46441-13.html
@avis Well key word there is "contemplating" ... it's not final yet. And it won't all be held there, only a few matches initially.
@wdansey That doesn't change their geographical position though! I do agree with your occidental-ness so lets leave it at that...
Any non-US westerner doesn't give a damn about NBA or NFL either, which vladislav should know very well since his profile says he's located in london, UK.
@wdansey
Only popular in AUS and NZ? you must not leave that region at all then. If you havent noticed. this is the INDIAN PREMIERE LEAGUE!.. and there is a population of 1 BILLION People who watch that. Take Australia and NZ combined, would not compare.
Stop spreading BS around!
@wdansey why do think so, may be you are not interested but I'm. don't try to show your opinion as every once. I love IPL
@wdansey Actually, the IPL was played in South Africa last year. Just sayin'.
@seriousam7
Dude, IPL is not any ordinary cricket fixture.
Google has done well to start off with IPL. Literally Billions of dollars have been put in to form IPL teams owned by some of the world’s richest people like Mukesh Ambani.
There is a huge market in cricket, and Google is making a good decision in that regard. More people around the world play and follow cricket than they do almost any other sport, apart from soccer/football. Unfortunately, America's only attempt to field a team resulted in a humongous loss against a low-ranked team, causing their disbandment.
Wow!! Just wow!!! Did not expect that coming.. Master move by Google...
Hopefully there will be no suddenly appearing couches or white robots appearing on the field televised.
@wdansey
Many would be inetrested in the IPL as well
@wdansey well the number of people that would be interested (arnd 1.5 billion Indians) is still a much larger than the number of self-claimed westerners!!!
p.s. England is bang in the middle ya'l!!! you count as western Europe but not as the west! the west only refers to the Americas!!! sorry guys!! you came up with the term. remember those good old days (or so it was for you) when you thought that you were the best and even decided to map the world with your nation in the middle?
@tinytom
culturally speaking...
@vVv
Well done on the Douglas Adams reference. I am suitably impressed.
Dosen't youtube need to put live streaming systems in first??
@McKirdy already has them. Theyve streamed stuff before, just not on a regular basis.
@rkmac
Ahhh, that makes sense now, I hadn't heard of it before. Still, why would I watch it, as NZ ( one of "the" cricket places)broadband is pretty laggy, and thats useless in such a high action sport.
They of course use some better stuff than regular youtube pipes to stream live, else it would work for nobody in the US either since they are also always bitching youtube is so slow.
(did you know many internetfilters filter out the word 'bitching' btw? Weird world)
As wdansey said, cricket isn't just Eastern.. It's played in over 100 countries.. It's just America that ignores sports that are played outside of its waters... Football(not American Football), Rugby, Cricket..
@newgadgetdrool
american football..? ah..u mean handegg..
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_APjgPmP_12w/SZEkmZuG1CI/AAAAAAAAEc0/mZzSuIDvRR0/Handegg_thumb4.jpg
@doobster The USA does have a team... just that they're still in the second or third division because they aren't good enough, yet!
The USA under-19 team actually qualified for the Under-19 Cricket World Cup. It's also worth noting that they crashed out without winning a game!
@newgadgetdrool
"America that ignores sports that are played outside of its waters"
so? the rest of the world ignores American football. why does it matter anyway? different countries can like different sports.
Vlad, get yourself to Lord's immediately because cricket is the finest sport known to man. Now where's my Earl Grey?
@Badge
for starters, Cricket is a Gentleman's game (until now), once it reaches US of A, only GOD knows!
@Badge
for starters, Cricket is a Gentleman's game (until now), once it reaches US of A, only GAWD knows!
I don't think "Western" is specific enough for NFL. The number of non-Americans watching would be tiny.
And cricket is the second most popular sport in the world, after soccer.
;)
Americans ignorant about things happening outside of the US of A? Well I never!
Anyway, this is wonderful news. It'll be a pleasure watching the games.

@unyari
i'm assuming you're not from the US. how many NFL teams can you name? not many? OMG YOU'RE SO IGNORANT. (/s) no i don't follow cricket because it's not big in the US. why is that a problem?
Cricket is the second most popular sport in the world, by audience numbers.
@cmdrdingbat
Thats because India is the second most populous nation and has more than a BILLION fans in itself.
@vvnraman
Lol so true!!
nice!..bye ustream..hello youtube.
Yes the Americans live in their little bubble and not recognise the breadth and depth of the rest of the world and what it has to offer. Sad really. NBA and NFL who gives a rats ass!
Since the author is in britain maybe he meant it subtly sarcastic? Putting it such that the americans will think it's true adds to the joke.
@whateva
I'd just like to point out that Vlad is British..
@whateva
I know Europeans that follow (and aspire to one day be in) the NBA. I'm confused, I thought the NBA was the one American league that everyone else sort of liked. Would the fact that the Europeans I know happen to be Serbian make a difference?
@whateva
what the hell. non-americans get all pissy when americans say "who gives a rat's ass about cricket" but then you turn around and say "who gives a rat's ass about the NBA and NFL" and get highest ranked for it. doubles standards much?
i for one, realize that worldwide football (soccer) and cricket are much more popular than American football and basketball. however, i really couldn't care less about cricket (though i enjoy watching football (soccer) once in a while). to me cricket is just a fucked up version of baseball. but that's not to say it's a bad game. just, watch whatever the hell you want, and be respectful of people.
lol Failtube. What's next Curling?
@traceroute Yes - because cricket really IS only as popular as curling. Let me guess what country you're from....
Ironic that Engadget should fall into the same trap as this idiot, by mentioning 'big' sports that nobody outside the US have any interest in. Wake up - there's another 5.9 billion people on the planet...
