Nokia Ovi Maps with free turn-by-turn navigation hands-on

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Sorry, but its another fail from Nokia. Nice idea, but they leave out the owners of their flagship handset from the initial release - and they're the one group of people who have loud voices, wide circles of influence, and are most annoyed by the company.
So yes, good one Nokia - shaft us N97 users again.

Common Nokia, i have one of the most expensive Phone ( N97 ) and i cant get any update yet ?. This is unfair to us with N97. Does anybody knows when N97 will get the updated Map ?
@Dbanj
28.1.2010 apparently. So only a week. N97 has a problem with free memory (there's not enough) and that needs to be solved first..
It will be great if Nokia's free pedestrian GPS navigation features prove accessible to the blind.

wll this work for the folks in the US ?
@Dbanj
Omo Iya, it does work in over 70 countries plus the unites states.
The Future Open Source and Free!
NOKIA has just made a superb move, everything is under one umbrella and free, thanks to OVI.
@Nino - this has absolutely *zero* to do with "open source". I really wish people would at least try to know what they're talking about...
thank god. now i can get rid of that cracked garmin mobile xt that always freezes up 5800
Ok so i have had the link to download the new version of Ovi Maps sent to my Nokia 5800XM (30.0.011) from the website, i have downloaded the app from the website also but i can't get either to install.
I'm presented with the "sorry not compatible with your device, check for firmware updates" message, but when i do this using either the handset or the Software Updater there are no firmware updates available
like it says the FW should be or greater than 31v , current version is v40 which is awesome.
if you want to update to v40
use http://handphone-solution.blogspot.com/2009/07/change-product-code-use-nemesis-service.html
right your product code down on a paper and then change your product code to http://www.nokiausers.net/forum/nokia-5800/23038-nokia-5800-product-codes.html
pick one and update your phone and after updating change your product code to back your original code.
@Nokia N900
or you can update from the phone directly. Type *#0000# goto options then check for firmware updates. make sure you do it over wireless though as im sure its pretty big.
@ Eric P, thanks for the info but i dont know or see how Nokia can deal with the lack of memory issue on the N97, anyway, lets keep our fingers crossed till next week, never say never
@ Nino, ewo lose, do you have the N97 Mini or the N97 and if you have the N97 Mini, is it working in the US. I heard people are having some difficaulty in downloading.
cool, just installed this on my 5800. Just a simple... Menu > Applications > App. Update > Install
Thank god i can get rid of my garmin xt that seems to have lost all the maps, yet voice nav still works.
TomTom -15% now. I think they'll have to find a new Business Model...
@Khattab
I guess we now wait for one of the big players to buy TomTom. Will it be Google or Apple?
Would this updated Ovi Maps work on older models like the Nokia E61?
@Ahmed Eltawil E61 does not have GPS built-in so my guess is no...
So what happens to "the best selling nokia device ever" - the E71? Are we seeing some kind of agressive "forced upgrade" play, here? 10 million dissapointed customers. That is way worse than Droid vs Nexus ..
Bad News: seems that Nokia is finally understanding how the game is played, too bad for the consumer.
Good News: there is hope yet for the sleeping giant of Espoo ..
@webber
Try that version:

In addition to this, SkyFire 1.5 Beta has come out for Nokia touchscreen phones (5800, and N97 etc..)
Man, they are making a killing today! :)

@jpxdude
cool thanks
S60 5.0 version (like N97):
http://nds1.nokia.com/PRODUCT_METADATA_0/Explore_Services/Ovi_Maps/maps_installer_3.03_10wk1_b05_s60_5.0.Nocs.sis
S60 3.2 version:
http://nds1.nokia.com/PRODUCT_METADATA_0/Explore_Services/Ovi_Maps/maps_installer_3.03_10wk1_b05_s60_3.2.Nocs.sis
Maps 3.03 for the N97 is going to be available from the 28th Jan 2010 via the IAD (also kown as Software Update).
Users of the N97 are advised to update their firmware after release, which will then make the Ovi Maps 3.03 application available for download
Niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
updated mine via nokia 5800 app updates, works great
Guess I'll have to finally replace my N95.
THUNK!!
yeah, thats the sound of the last nail in the GARMIN / TOMTOM coffin!
Maybe I shouldn't have let go of my 5800. (Off to buy an E72)
no N900 support? whats up with that? isn't is their top of the line device
@mottis
I believe Navteq and Teleatlas owns the map data (maybe apart from possibly NASA like bodies). Pretty much all the GPS / map service companies use either of them.
Nokia owns Navteq
Tomtom owns Teleatlas
Google uses teleatlas (atleast maps.google.com copyright mentions)
Garmin uses Navteq
MS uses Navteq
Interesting scenario. Days of paying for GPS s/w are over. Garmin might be the biggest loser in this as they don't own any mapdata. They have rely on Navteq or go to Tomtom for Teleatlas..
Tomtom can still make money by licensing Teleatlas data to all the vendors likewise Nokia too with Navteq.
@sundarms
i think they will all start to market service extra's and try to make money from them.
Why do they have to call it a gender-mixed word for "eggs"
@pachi72
Did you load the map using the maploader first ?
They make the N900, their best smartphone ever, with the biggest screen (N810 etc NOT smartphones), fastest processor, best GPS (get's a lock in seconds even indoors, my old N95 8GB took minutes under clear skies) and they leave it out of this?
COME ON NOKIA: get your programmers back in the cage, just because they did 2 updates for the N900 in a week doesn't mean they get to slack off this one.
@Xen
The N900 is an Internet tablet with a GSM/UMTS radio.
It's in the same category as the N810.
There's probably plenty of reasons as to why it won't work currently,
Hmmm.. now I'm not sure if I should go with a BB Bold or an E72... :-(
Mmm...I'm lost...I need free turn by turn navigation to the ovi store please!
Not sure about this "free" business. Can some please explain something to this newbie...
I've just successfully downloaded (with the phone and WiFi connection) the new FREE Ovi maps to my Nokia E72 but it launches GPRS data mode for an internet connection when I try to run it. It appears I cannot view/launch "Ovi maps" via my Wi-Fi connection only via "paid-for" GPRS connection, and download something as I scroll. Please could someone advise. Thanks
@Marvo
Load Nokia map loader to your pc and then load the maps to your phone's memorycard with you pc.
Application that makes maps from thin air is not yet ready for Nokia phones.
My phone N97 just flashed now with a question asking if i want to check for updates, i clicked yes but no updates available but i guess something will happen soon, hopefully by tomorrow as promised. Nokia, please don't disappoint
