Apple Tablet rumor roundup: publishers and carriers edition

The rumor: The Apple Tablet will "strike a familiar chord with owners of the original iPhone, with similarities in industrial design trickling all the way down to the handset's button and connectivity components."
Our take: Honestly, we can believe this one. Apple has had a great deal of success with the iPhone, and we've already seen the "tablet PC" as it's known today take a nosedive. Apple Insider is saying that the device may look a lot like a "first-generation iPhone that's met its match with a rolling pin," and while we've obviously no inside way to confirm nor deny, we can get why Apple would stick close to a design that it knows will work. Oh, and be sure to peek two more clearly fake mockups after the break.
The rumor: New York Times Arthur Sulzberger, Jr. won't be at Apple keynote next week.
Our take: So? Just because the head honcho from The Times is planning to be in Davos, Switzerland next week while Apple unveils its tablet doesn't mean that Jobs can't showcase the device's ability to video chat across oceans in front of the masses... if Apple even has a deal with any publisher. If Apple really is reaching out to publishers for content deals, you can bet your bottom dollar the NYT is listening. And be honest -- if you had the option of being in Davos or some convention center in San Francisco, which would you pick?
More after the break... if you dare.
The rumor: Double dock connectors (one on the bottom, one on the side) and iPhone-esque antennas are coming to the Tablet.
Our take: If this tablet doohickey ends up being as multimedia friendly as we imagine, having twin dock connectors makes gobs of sense. With a 7-, 8-, 9- or 10-inch display, you can rest assured that some users will want to flip this thing sideways and dock it as a portable movie viewer, which becomes infinitely easier with a side-mounted connector. As for the antennas? We'd be pleased as punch to see a stripe extend along the full side of the device rather than some "iPod touch-sized pill" -- the latter of which we found remarkably disruptive to the flow of the touch's design. If Apple Insider's earlier report about the overall look pans out, we'd guess this one would fall right in line with that.
The rumor: Apple is in talks to bring McGraw-Hill and Hachette educational content to its forthcoming tablet.
Our take: Apple's no stranger to the world of education; in fact, it's difficult to find an institution of higher learning here in the US that doesn't have an OS X-based machine somewhere on the campus (and in a public-use facility). Considering the likelihood that some sort of e-reader functionality will be baked into the device, the suits in Cupertino would be crazy to not field interest from powerhouses like these two. Of course, we can't exactly see schools lining up to drop however many dollars (read: a lot) on scads of Apple Tablets for students, but we suppose all those free iPod and iPhones given out to select kids at select schools could one day be replaced by a slate.
The rumor: Clayton Morris expects that both Verizon Wireless and AT&T will offer subsidized versions of the Apple Tablet.
Our take: Hmm. Early, early reports noted that the impending Apple Tablet would boast HSDPA capabilities, and given the company's existing relationship with AT&T, it seems like a partnership with "America's fastest 3G network!!!" would be in the cards. But Verizon? We guess anything's possible, but unless Apple has a next-gen iPhone waiting for Big Red's CDMA network, we highly doubt it'd publicly open that can of worms. Not that we'd argue with actually giving consumers a choice or anything.
We've got a sinking feeling that the final days, hours and minutes before next Wednesday's keynote will keep the leaks and hot air flowing, but at this point, you're probably better off stepping away and just waiting for the live coverage to begin. Unless you enjoy having your expectations crushed, that is.

you can call with Apple table phone xD
It's odd, to me, the vitriol that Apple gets for making a successful product. The iPhone is a great phone. It may not be your cup of tea, but you have to credit them with producing something that lots of people *do* want, the vast majority of which are very happy with. Yes it has issues, but the issues are outweighed by the numerous advantages, at least for the people who are buying them. It use to be that Apple was an underdog and everyone bashed them because they weren't doing that well. Ever since they started having success with the iPod and now the iPhone, people bash them for succeeding, wildly. I guess they can't win. Err... well... not in these comment wars, anyway.
@(Unverified)
Exactly.
@(Unverified) I think the 'dislike' of the product and the 'dislike' of the fanboys gets mixed up into one thing most of the time. I think most 'haters' really only hate the fanboys, and perhaps because of them started to hate the product...or just play up their hate to piss off the fanboys. For example myself. I don't hate the iPhone, I have never even used one, touched one, or stood next to someone with one in their hand. I have no problem giving it respect though. On the other hand I find the diehard fanboys to be highly annoying. They will rip every other device/company simply because it is not their product of choice and they will defend Apple at no end as if it were their mother (or personal Jesus).
You there, with the negative comments! You are creating a new paradigm. You cry like a scorned lover yet you can not resist the drama you despise. You don't know what love is, you aren't a fanboy. You don't carry any flag. You tell yourself this makes you special, you alone have clear vision.
Reality distortion fields are for the weak. You are strong.
But still you click, read, type and press the hipster styled cyan button, accurately labeled 'SUBMIT'.
@Badison Let me get this straight, since he shows un-favoritism towards the rumors, and he "bothered to comment a few times" he needs the wambulance? He bothered to comment because he wanted to voice his opinion on the matter. The quantity of his posts explaining his opinion, including his counter-argument towards Average White Boy in the 2nd thread, doesn't show him whining...at all.
Whining would be that comment that TheRogueFFAngel put up that got deleted.....proven by example. But hey, lets play by your rules, opinions be damned.
and since Step 1 is already completed, I might suggest that we duck for cover now.
How many people are really going to get one though? Really?
@MVMNT I certainly would it would be a lot easier than carrying around my 17" MacBook Pro... I have been holding off on getting an iPod Touch because the display resolution is too low, and the screen to small to view my video files without eye strain. If it comes with at least a 720p display resolution I will buy one...

No, No & No.
More Apples please.

Can we bring back the apple bullshit post ignore options again that would be great.. Cheers

@Accidental I don't understand why there isn't more buzz about this either. If it's a fake then it's the best I've ever seen.
I sense collective denial. Everyone is enjoying the gossip too much.

check this out.
I read the interview in the french newspaper, and either, he is ready to make a fool of himself, which I doubt for a company this size.
or he doesn't give a ... to apple's stuff and told this anyways

Overrated!

It's unbelievable. The design of Apple tablet(iSlate??) is pretty bad.
If Apple release same design, I never purchase it........ Shit!!!!!!!
Those photos are rather realistic. The dual cameras may look like a bad Photoshop job but I don't see any other tell-tale signs. Perhaps it is some bold new 3D initiative (which would require dual cameras). That last photo looks like the first-time screen on a Mac which contradicts the rumors that it is an oversized iPhone. Perhaps it is a compromise with a full Mac OS X desktop but relies on iPhone apps which would allow for intermediate functionality as rumored. I don't see why the educational market would need this as it is way too expensive and unneeded as there are cheaper laptops. Eventually the educational market could take advantage of such a device when they are cheaper.
@brown like dookie I think Verizon is definitely a possibility. If the tablet is just a iPhone on steroids, and it’s marketed against the kindle as a multimedia device that does all, then I would say yes.
It probably will be a device to compete with kindle like devices but with features to do gaming, music, videos and more. On top of that, remember the deals that apple was making with major networks. That’s where Verizon comes in. It would provide streaming to a tv broadcast service they would offer with this device.
I could be wrong but if the tablet is true, Verizon is definitely in the picture. Details: http://bit.ly/iphone-4g-apple-tablet-details
I will laugh when Apple actually does announce the slate and it turns out to be the exact one shown in the pics above.
One thing I do not get is that if this does have VZW or AT&T as a carrier and offers a subsidized cost, which it most likely will, what makes that any different than a 3G Netbook under contract? Unless AT&T were sweethearts and let me use the tablet on my same account with little to no additional cost. :P
Exclusive leaked shot of the Apple Tablet http://yfrog.com/1yuydvj
I really, really want the Wednesday reveal to just be Core i5 Macbooks, iLife '10, and a hard drive storage increase for the Apple TV. The sheer unimportantness of it would be hilarious considering all the hype.
I think the idea of the slate is pretty cool, but I doubt it'll take off.
27th... Apple TV dead. Ipad launched with N wifi, content streaming to the drive over your network and one more thing.... N wifi streaming add on for the tv that plugs into hdmi. Control and stream your content directly to any tv anywhere you go and control it via the tablet.
SLATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS!!!
