PS3 finally properly hacked?
In a post titled "Hello hypervisor, I'm geohot," hacker George Hotz (already known in the iPhone community) has made a strong claim: that he has cracked the PS3. The system has remained (mostly) uncompromised for over three years now, with a few exceptions here and there. But, this one pledges full read/write access to the entire system memory and complete control over the processor -- all without a mod chip. Has he really done it, if so how, and what comes next? That all remains to be seen. This exploit supposedly "isn't really patchable, but [Sony] can make implementations much harder," meaning he isn't tipping his hat until he's ready, because once he does the never-ending firmware update war begins, and as we've seen on the PSP, Sony can really knock out those updates. [Thanks, Deepak]

@Hydra
Download the PS3 Media Server and it will stream MKVs for you. (as well as a plethra of other formats).
i do it all the time.
I can't logically buy a ps3 until I can play ps2 games on it. So until someone makes a hack for that that isn't dangerous, I am not interested. I know they took out the chip or whatever, but the hack has been done already, google it.
The PS3 is such a beautiful machine, but Sony is such an ugly machine.
All of you are hilarious whining about PS2 emulators... guess what? I don't need one! Ha! 60GB SKU FTW!
@Kyle Krcmaric
ps3 slim = 300 bucks
ps2 = 80 bucks
having 220 bucks more in my pocket than you do ftw-er-er
Does this mean I can I tap a PS3 into a render farm and us it to speed up 3d renders? Would it even be worth it?
I have no interest in pirating software, but I'd be interested in using the power of the PS3 in a more pragmatic fashion.
That would be awesome to finally use some of the potential of this little beast sleeping under my TV, what i would really want is BOXEE and the capacity for the PS3 is to act as a "wireless screen sharing hub" that would just make my TV act as a second screen for my macbook so I wouldn't need to plug the long HDMI adaptor to it or use the PS3's crappy browser.
BTW, i hope GEOHOT put his face in the jailbreak process like he did in the Iphone one, that was funny...
Even if this does work, everyone's PS3 has a different key...
I really hope that PSN doesn't turn into what the PC and XBOX versions of games such as Call Of Duty have become. Cheating is neither cool, fun nor fair.
Sony pick up the phone, call him, and buy him out...
pay him 50, 000, he'll step aside... Or higher him as a programmer, or something, the guy obviously knows the ps3 inside out...
What do they by he hacked it? What special things can it do? Please
help?
@Fye537 he basically opened up a closed system to have hardware level access to the processor and all the useable internal bits. This is a very good thing to the people who really want to do anything with it since Sony already stated that it "Only does everything". Now there is the possibility that it really will do "everything" in the computer sense of he word everything...
What would the PS3 be capable of then?
Can I use it as a DVR?
Can I download a better browser?
What?
See, he says he's got control of the Cell and hypervisor access, but nowhere does he mention RSX access. And if he doesn't have that, it's really not all that different from just putting Linux on an older unit.
Here's hoping he doesn't release it. Last thing we need is pirates driving the system into the ground.
@Alan Smithee I have to agree, the idea of free games is always appealing, but look at the psp, it's shit now, to be fair.
I'd like to start by saying GREAT JOB Geohot!!!
But, come on people! Please, stop with the "I want to play pirated games!"... The only reason why the console is locked up this tight is because of you hypocritical winers! You want all the good games, but you are too cheap to pay for them?! How do you think Sony pays for the hardware in your PS3?! How do you think the developers pay for the cool games?! If everyone play pirated games, there will be no money for developing games and quality will drop to a WII-like state!
If it hadn't been for you people, we would have been able to get a proper media center onto the console and use the hardware to it's full potential years ago!
I am crossing my fingers and looking forward to this hack hopefully seeing the light of day so I can use my PS3 as an über-media center soon!
Homebrew is a mixed bag. On the DS it's gone nowhere On the wii, it's enabled piracy but I don't think the wii is sufferng from that and I'm not so sure homebrew on the wii is having much of an affect. On the PSP it's used primarily to assist piracy and is really hurting that market. On the iphone, homebrew pushed Apple into opening up the app store and allowing for more & more apps to be created for the iphone.
I'm hopeful this forces a path more similar to the iphone than the others... I hope that this opens the door to a playstation app store on the ps3, and we get some really useful stuff. I'm sure a bunch of people want their Mame rom emulations... that's not so important to me. We all know the ps3 is robust and yet lacking in the media playback capabilities. Give me the ability to play back (or for that matter, rip) HD DVDs with an xbox 360 drive plugged in. Let me rip blu-rays to the internal hard drive. Support for XBMC/Boxee. Software that can work with a USB TV tuner or other USB hardware.
@h0mi
The Wii is starting to suffer, but it's more on the publishers. Still, over a million people pirated SSB Brawl last year. And House of the Dead: Overkill? 85k sold, 860k pirated...
one of the reasons for PS2's longevity...modding
If his hack doesn't kill your PS3 Sony's own updates will.
My 1st gen 60GB has run out of time... :(
Sign me up for a one-way ticket to hell, baby.
if it gets hacked, then i guess it'll be the time to own a ps3. hahaha.
here goes jack sparrow. hahahaha
you cant tell those guys to go "properly fix" the current broken ps3 fats?... seems sony cant fix there own stuff atm, perhaps getting in some experts may be a good idea... j/k
Im sure sony is working hard firing programmers, and rehiring as we speak
