Apple tablet maybe starts showing up in app-tracking stats, kinda
It's sort of funny that this is the hardest evidence we have of an Apple tablet, but here we go: mobile app analytics company Flurry is saying that it's detected around 50 devices on Apple's Cupertino campus that have the "characteristics" of a tablet, running a new version of the iPhone OS numbered 3.2. How? Around 200 different apps with Flurry's tracking code were downloaded and used on these mystery devices -- mostly games, followed by entertainment and media apps -- and Flurry first noticed this new device in October, with numbers picking up in January. Unfortunately, Flurry hasn't said what these mysterious tablet characteristics are, so we don't have much to go on -- and without specifics like a bigger screen size or a faster processor we're skeptical. For all we know, this is just a new iPhone running a slightly tweaked build of OS 3.0 that supports a higher-resolution screen or something -- especially looking at that 3.2 version number, when everything else we've heard suggests the tablet will jump to 4.0.
What's more, 200 apps in the grand scheme of things really isn't that many -- Flurry only tracks small percentage of the 100,000 apps in the App Store. We're not exactly willing to accept any detailed analysis based on a dataset that narrow, so let's just say that it's very likely that Apple's testing new devices running a new version of the iPhone OS and leave it at that until Wednesday, shall we?

@kj4gr
Did you go hunting on the Cupertino campus?
So this confirms that the Apple tablet is just a giant ipod touch. An expensive giant ipod touch. LOL.
@R
I'm fine with a scaled up iPod touch as long as its thickness doesn't scale as much. The focus should be the software.
@onlymyrailgun excellent!
This is ridiculous. It has a column for gaming and... photography.
Impossible.
Everybody is sad to find out that the Apple Tablet will be running a version of the iPhone OS.
Are you really surprised?
Windows has 95% of the market... but tablets running Windows are 0.01% of that.
Why are you expecting Apple to make a Macbook-based tablet?
I'm pretty sure the Apple tablet is gonna be a *gadget* for specific tasks... web browsing, magazine and newspaper reading, videos, etc.
It's not a computer.
@Michael Scrip "Hey, "A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions"!!!!!! via wikipedia and common sense!
So your cell phone, ipods, tablets, gps units, pda's, mid's, e-readers; they are all technically computers..........
@cosmicinglewood
Point.... missed
@cherryboom and cosmicinglewood
Jeez... are you really obsessing about the definition of the word "computer" this much? I mean... you both went to Wikipedia and and actually pasted in the definition of computer. Wow.
Let me explain myself again... even though you knew EXACTLY what I was talking about... and I really shouldn't have to go back and clarify. But here goes:
People are hoping for FULL OSX to run on Apple's tablet. They basically want a Macbook without a keyboard.
Instead... all signs are pointing to a device running a mobile OS designed for certain tasks.
To review: the Apple Tablet will not run the desktop version of OSX ... It will likely be a device running a mobile OS.
Is that any clearer now?
I am truly sorry that the last line of my previous comment was so confusing that you both had to look up the definition of the word "computer" on Wikipedia. You both are smart enough to know where to look up information... but you completely missed the point of the comment altogether.
Wow, sounds like some frustrated readers need to play with them selves if they are all up in a hot and bother over the news regarding the most heavily anticipated gadget in history!
I cant wait to see if this "thing" turns out to be as spiff as I am hoping it will be. I hope it has a 48 hour or better battery, super thin and light with AR coated impact resistant gorilla glass and the same clean unmatched optically and aesthetically pleasing design as the 3G touch ;)
A video/ still camera would also make this think slick; so would a nice 128 or 256GB solid state storage with a hope is held out (memory expansion slot). Optical digital out on the audio would also be trick, as would a swappable battery. Inductive charging and wifi sync please..... Let hope apple really busts down on the competition and sets the standard for others to try and play catch up on....
Some user adjustable UI options would also be well appreciated!
And lets not forget the wish list of so many others who has posted about what they wanted in this deal.
Considering that apple shafted touch users by not including a camera of any type in the 3G Touch, I would not be surprised if they left lots of room for improvement......
More than anything else I hope and feel confident that this thing will have the same degree of impeccable fit and finnish with clean, clear lines and solid construction as their other recent devices.
Oh and to those who posted about the latest Shuffle being wack; they are right that it is overpriced; but show me another produce that does the same thing.... I have one of those tiny little buggers clipped to my at all times~
@cosmicinglewood
So tell me again what it is you plan on doing with this device once you have it?
Clearly your love for all things Apple trancends common sense or monetary value.
48 hour battery? Sure, just hook it up to your car battery at all times.
Inductive charging? Removable battery? Have you been paying any attention at all for the past 2 years?! Apple won't even put that in their LAPTOPS.
256GB SSD? Well, that would be good. Upgrade your 500GB base-model har drive for just 999 dollars more at purchase!
@bebop
Saying "@#$% you I have an Apple Tablet" to everyone you meet.
@sammymoho
They have creams for being premature or maybe an apple a day might help.
Whatever the Apple Tablet is, HTC will make something equal or better in 6 months. You can count on that..
@josesxi a company creating a 'me too' clone of an Apple product? NO WAI!
@dansus if anyone can keep it hard for three days they should probably call either their doctor or a really talented prostitute.
@cosmicinglewood
3 days? Sod the doctor, its Gigolo time!
I've decided to acknowledge that this tablet will be successful based soley on the amount of buzz its getting, and the amount of reaction that Apple's competitors has had to get ahead of the game.
If you look at the products Apple has released that have low margins/marketshare, they are those that a.) hasn't been marketed "for free" by tech writers, and or had TV coverage or b.) doesnt have a great/diverse market segment. AppleTV, Mac mini, xServe, MBA etc. Compare these with their jauggernauts iPod and iPhone, which has massive advertisment campaigns. Chances are, people will buy this tablet if they can price this between 699 to 999 because they have bought into the buzz. It may even be subsidized with a telecom.
What I need Apple to do is give me either a full fledged OS (I'm sorry but a form factor like this running Apps is a travesty. Can you make Photoshop a App? Illustrator? yeah...) or give me a OS that surpasses what we've seen with the Courier videos.
The Courier videos are almost the perfect implementation of what a productive tablet should be. Note-taking, multiple books, publishing to other mediums; hopefully Apple has considered all this when they implemented this into the ecosystem.
We'll see on Wednesday.
Actually I think Apple hype works the other way around: the hype is so big that Steve could come on stage, take a crap on the tablet, throw it in the air and declare artistic freedom of the individual and it would be a sales hit.
spy Flurry
Apple will revolutionize tablet industry on a global scale just like iPhone revolutiioniZed global celll industry.
According to Calacanus we are going to see a flat panel Apple TV, that would be of more interest to me. You keep the tablet.. for now.
Oh man, I can't wait until the iSlate is released. It will be the best thing since shutter shades. With iPod Socks costing $29 ( http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9720G/B ), I hope Apple will be selling iSlate Socks for around $99. It's just so fashionable.
The glossy screen would be great too. Outside you can use it as a mirror to apply your emo eyeliner.
If it's the tablet, and it's mainly being used for games, that pretty much confirms it's an overgrown Touch. Barring any surprises in the Wednesday announcement, there goes my interest. Without a full OS capable of running "real" apps, it'll be little more than an expensive toy.
3.2 OS wishfull thinking but perhaps thats just the update for the iPhone and te tablet will run fully fledged OS X?
I just hope they put the crappy non-multitask iPhoneOS in it... it will be fun.
This piece of Junk will reveal to the world the emptiness of Apple products.
Apple just want to take their fee for listing apps, listing songs... listing every emptiness they can once you bought their stupid hardware.
An iPod touch with a camera?
More exciting than the Apple iTablet news is the data about the data mining / tracking that Flurry is pursuing. I don't understand why most people here are not troubled by this, but it pisses me off that companies now monitor our activities and reveal "indiscretions" to whomever wants to know.
In this case, it was an innocuous case of iTablet revealed, but what if it was someone's unapproved political leanings? What if all this electronic surveillance is used to punish people who do not believe in the party line?
It's too late already, but I'd love to see someone lament the real problem with the blog entry, the Flurry of activity, rather than the missing iTablet.
On my application I use pinch analytics and I've had a device that shows up as other for about a month.
@Ins3rtNam3H3r3
Since November 5th, to be exact.
Admit it: we all like Apple Tablet rumors. That why w're here.
I think the fact they have devices running 3.2 just means there will be an update to fix bugs and the like until OS 4.0 is released along with the new iPhone.
I would say it's very likely a tablet will be released, if not they would have said so as they have done before. Apple is a business at the end of the day and messing around with your stock with this amount of hype would be silly. Then again you never know.
I must agree with the above post regarding data mining, I don't think it would go as far as revealing or collecting user content in that way but the fact that it could easily be implemented is food for thought.
Some of us like Apple products, not all ( the latest iPod nano although great to hold, what a ridiculous place to put a camera) those who don't and can't appreciate products solely on it's brand are in fact the same who buy them just because of the name.
