Is this the Motorola MOTOSPLIT?

Update: Yes, we know it's a render, sheesh. We have a bit of a history with Motorola and renders, you know.

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
That looks like my Zune with two keyboards... (My Zune with a clear silicone case)
There's probably a good reason why Nokia never pursued a split keyboard again after the Nokia 6820.
@nbollinger except they did,. the E70
6820 was a geat phone.
@charlie x
Yeah but its more or less the same design. It never caught on.
@nbollinger the E70 is a fair bit larger and has a lot more features, the 6800 series was very simple, the E70 wasn't as popular since it was a lot more expensive.
As for it not catching on, it was a very popular series, if i remember correctly there are 4 in the 6800 series, and the 6820 was by far the most popular.
Regardless though, they did make more than one type of that style phone.
@charlie x
the e70 was also a piece of shit
not the keyboard layout's fault tho'
GREAT JOB AT&T, KEEP UP THE WONDERFUL LINE UP...
i think the way that it's supposed to work is that you lay it on a desk in order to type
i've seen some other prototype designs that have included around about the same model design, and their main use isn't necessarily to be carried around and used on the go
and it's wider than a nokia due to its 16:9 screen ratio which is pretty obviously seen in the picture
@banshee287
agreed.
looks very interesting
@xtremexx
except people here like to think otherwise for some odd reason
apparently innovation is looked down upon if they dont think its plausible?
Wait, are you guys at Engadget actually saying this photo looks even remotely real? Surely your photoshop-vision eyes haven't failed you this badly, right?
@Scape3d Thank you I was going crazy reading the comments acting like this thing looks half way real. It looks like a zune screen and some part of a droid and maybe some cardboard.
On a 3.7 inch screen, that would be awkward as **** to hold and type on.
It's thin.....that's about all this phone has going for it.
F#gly.
@eka
says you.
The split keyboard may not fly, but i give them points for going all in.
looks cool...
slide down 1 side, you get a dialpad....
slide both sides out, you get the nokia 6820 style keyboard...
hope it's LED keys too! :D
Ppl judge too quickly. This looks very interesting. Even though the keyboard would seem to be WAY uncomfortable, why would they make it if it was? I'll keep my eye on this one.
@Oxyrt "why would they make it if it was?"
That logic means nothing. Why would Palm release the Centro with a keyboard that got such criticism, looking as hard as it actually is to type on? Why do game companies release games with choppy, low frame rates? Logically, many things should not happen. Why would Nokia release the original Ngage, which looked awkward to talk on and, surprise, was? When something seems wrong, the confidence the company has in releasing it doesn't prove that it's right. This keyboard looks awkward and Moto making or releasing it proves nothing other than they continue to try something new and hope they score hits.
@JONNNathannn
But isn't that what EVERY company tries to do? Try something new and hope it's successful. Nokia didn't think the Ngage was a COMPLETE failure, or they would never have invested the money in it. Same with Palm. Apple tried something new with the iPhone and it worked, but then again they also tried the Newton and that failed and they're hopefully fixing their failures with their new Apple Tablet. Not every company just succeeds without trying. So... maybe YOUR logic means nothing?
Does AT&T enjoy odd form factors? Its almost like they don't want to sell any Android phones.
Promotional renders would never drop *such* a shadow.
It needs some kind of spring loaded action so you can press a button and the keyboard snaps out like a batarang.
Reminds me of a Razor with a half a$$ keyboard. I wonder is they're gonna split the price too...
You mean, "MOTOUGLY". . .Har. . Har har harrrr.
typical motorola, they make one decent device, then roll out a line of crap phones. i guess they are hoping to milk the droid like the milked the razr for 5 years
That gotta be a photoshop because that is one fugly device.
Could this be the mytouch slide?
looks like cheap, rickety Motocrap to me
Say what you will, people, but I think this phone is sexy! :P If they come out with this I think I'll finally have use for my $100 ATT gift card, too bad it'll be in addition to my N900 on T-mo. xD
@cherryboom
think he may be letting Motorola know that "Engadget" wants "1" so they can do a review...
Just my .02
I really like the way motorola is trying to change the form factor of it's new qwerty keyboard devices first the backflip and now this :) much better than lg's lame attempt to change the idea of what a qwerty keyboard on a phone should be like with the versa
Enough ridiculous layouts Moto. Where the hell is my Voq 2?!
http://images04.olx.com/ui/3/18/73/61781573_1-Sierra-Wireless-Voq-Professional-Phone-.jpg
so m guessing the whole screen is the spacebar?
For anyone who is slamming the design of this phone, I have one question for you; have you ever used the Nokia 6800, 6820 or 6830?
The T-Mobile 6800 was my first mobile phone and it is still my favourite. Then, Nokia introduced the E50 and that phone made me drool. The split keyboard is a terrific design and is super easy to use. The only problem with this phone is the screen. It may be too large for comfort but we'll have to wait and see.
