With all the recent talk about the
iSlate,
iPad, iSlab, whatever... doesn't it seem like the obvious candidate for the name of Apple's rumored tablet computer is being completely overlooked? Like Apple's first phone that later came to be called the iPhone, isn't the most obvious name for an Apple tablet the
iTablet? To support the theory we decided to share the above image that we received from a trusted source and believe to be authentic. It's a picture taken of an Apple Store employee's corporate email after receiving information about the time and place of Wednesday's Apple event. While the content of the email wasn't very enlightening, note the word used in the filename of the second attachment: "itablet." Now this doesn't prove a thing. The administrative assistant who sent the mass email could have been using "itablet' much in the same way that we've been using the term
for years as a generic placeholder for the rumored device. Then again, maybe we should heed the wisdom of Occam's Razor when speculating about Apple's naming preference for a 10-inch tablet computer?
P.S.
Amtek currently holds the US trademark (and itablet.com domain) for "iTablet" and continues to sell products under that name as it has
for years. Not that a silly thing like trademark ownership could stop Apple from announcing its iPhone at a time when
Cisco owned the rights.
Update: Looks like the attached image name above, while authentic, likely originated in a post from
Pocket-lint (look at the properties). For what it's worth, the
invite image we received was embedded with a name "top.jpg." Regardless, this is probably not Apple revealing its product name in a sloppy pre-event slip-up. [Thanks, MarkNewby]
iSlate sounds better!!
@pokes
should really only be one syllable after the 'i'
@pokes
iSlate sounds horrible for a tablet device
@pokes
Like 'Mac cPad' the best.
@pokes man i just cant imagine when this thing gets jailbroken now thats what i will be waiting for, screw apples limitations :P
@pokes Yes... iSlate for iSluts
@leilaridge
I doubt medical and educational use unless apple ditches itunes dependancy.
I cant imagine doctors in wards or teachers needing to sync to itunes to get things done.
U think itunes is suitable in a professional settings? Would patient medical records be secure enough?
@pokes
so this whole post is WASTE ?
@pokes
iLegal-Ruled-Notepad sounds better.
@pokes
I love these questioning articles by engadget. Almost makes me believe they haven't seen the device, handled it, and taken photos of it for two dozen articles they've prewritten for tomorrow's launch.
@pokes - it won't be called iSlate because that sounds too much like 'isolate' and this device is all about networking (both social and technical) and inclusion.
It will be called iPad.
@pokes
NEWTON 2 is the only correct name!
@pokes As far as I know, Apple has never shipped a 3+ syllable iProduct. iMac, iPod, iPhone, iBook, always two syllables (with others following in separate words, like "iPod Touch"). iTV was not a shipping product (it became Apple TV by the time it launched).
@Guspaz
mac-book-air
@fighterfelix
There's no "i" in Mac-book......
@pokes Needs to be something really special. Not confident, even though it's Apple, there's only so much you can put on a tablet.
Apple Tablet Compiled Details: http://bit.ly/iphone-4g-apple-tablet-details
@pokes completely agree only one syllable after 'i', wont be called Ipad because to close to ipod, not itablet becasue to long, my bets are on either islate or something completely different.
I think the most obvious name would be "A flat display with multitouch support from Apple with OSX and THE REAL INTERNETZ!"
@loocas or TBA
Unfortunately, it will probably use iPhone OS rather than OSX.
I wonder how Apple will manage to buy itablet.com this time.
@Saad With a lot of money?
@schneiderman looooooooooots of moneyyyyyyz
iTablet sounds like some kind of optic medicine. What about iScribe?
@TC How 'bout iScribble?
Why is everyone so hung up on the name of the thing?
iSlate? Sounds like something Santa Clause would buy.. iTablet sounds great though i have no more money Apple! Damn u ):
@schneiderman
They should come up with a name without the i prefix. That would be good!!
@pokes macbook?
I like canvas more.
@Ziltoid the omniscient +1
Why would Apple associate a brand new product with a previous failure? (iTablet)
Debunked, but nice try. Coincidentally could someone at engadget look at the message source of the invitation email and see what this image was originally named?

I'm still partial to the name "Mac'siPad"
@CJ
Very good, +1 :D
@CJ
"Mac'siPad, for those heavy (data) flow days."
@nickl Too faaaarrrrr...
@CJ I'll wait for the next one...with wings
All I can say is... they are having the party of a life-time over at MacRumors... Getting wet and sticky over there.
@onlymyrailgun Hahaha true
I don't really get why we are still discussing rumours or possibilities when we have had a specific date given to us when Apple will tell us what's new.
This probably won't happen, but I would laugh if Apple didn't release any 'tablet' device and just gave us a touch screen MacBook.
If this doesn't change the world forever for the better I'l be very disappointed.
iDon'tcare.
iTab
@BobTail
Yep... that's gonna be the lazy name... just like iTouch. Yuck.
Actually... iTab doesn't really sound that bad. It's easier to say. At least "tab" is short for "tablet"
What was "pod" short for?
@Michael Scrip
According to Wikipedia, 'pod' was an homage/refrence to 2001: A Space Oddessy ("open the Pod bay doors, HAL")
Which is actually quite clever, considering the 'eye' of the clickwheel and the sterile white design. On the other hand, most of the people here who defend their brand of choice with such fervor probably don't have the attention span to get through even a third of 2001.
Damn, I was hoping for iBrick.
And it's a little misleading to call this a tablet, since "Tablet PC" has a very different meaning from the crippled piece of junk Apple will almost certainly shove down everyone's throats.
@Atkins
Apple products are always more locked-down than anyone else's products. With Apple, it's their way or the highway, and I'm happily cruising down the highway giving Apple the finger. No other vendor pulls this shit; even Microsoft's platforms are more open than Apple's.
Yes, I am an Apple hater, and I wear that badge with pride.
iAm going to be disappointed after all this pre-hype that nothing can possible live up to.
why can't you (engadget.com) just wait till tomorrow and see what apple will come up with. does your life depend on this rumored "tablet"? it's becoming a nuisance.
Why talk about the name when there are photos of it to enjoy.... ;-)
