Apple rumor roundup: 'the day before' edition

Moving on, we've got even more whispers that publishers -- with the NYT mentioned specifically -- around the globe have been getting wind of this thing as the suits in Cupertino attempt to nail down content deals. Broadcast Engineering even has a piece that straight-up states that Apple was "was in New York City last week showing the tablet to media companies as a new way to sell books, newspapers and other reading material through its iTunes online store." Still not convinced? NetbookNews has an apparently ongoing article about the authenticity / non-authenticity of a Media Markt tweet that "accidentally" leaked a supposed €899 price point for the device, while Hot Hardware switches things up and reports that AT&T will lose its iPhone exclusivity during tomorrow's event. Oh, and the very first hands-on review of the Apple tablet is also live (courtesy of Mosspuppet), while yet another hotly contested image has arisen to perch atop these very words. Phew.

@Solidstate89
Maybe for you yanks it is! Mass Effect2 aint out till Friday for us Brits! *Shakes fist in an old man at young whipper snapper sort of way*
@Solidstate89
I'm playing it RIGHT now and it's nothing short of glorious.
On a side note that review on Joystiq is so horrible it's not even funny. Yes the game is amazing but seriously anyone could have written that verbage that Justin McElroy threw up there.
Thank God for other review sites. Simply saying ME2 is better than ME1 because of ammo, combat system change, and armor changes isn't a decent review.
@Solidstate89
And I am glad too. Those Mass Effect 2 Ads every 5 minutes were 3 Billion times worse than the iTablet rumors.
"Scotty, beam me to tomorrow."
@onlymyrailgun
The RDF is quite high this time.
@onlymyrailgun
iTablet
iSlate
iNewton 2 -the revenge
Whatever the name Apple needs to give it up like a women marrying for money!
@onlymyrailgun
I can't see this really being any sort of "ground breaking new product" at $1,200 dollars. it's an iphone with a bigger screen. Is a 6 inch bigger screen worth the $1,000 price difference?
@onlymyrailgun If this thing is a glrofied 10" ipod touch I will hate steve jobs forever. Please Please Please let it run OSX software.. The apple app store will murder the potential of a tablet device.
I still await the day when the star trek tablet is a reality.. The USS Enterprise didn't have an app approval process damnit!
@nicholiservia
I don't care what the device is called so long as it doubles as a mirror and I can break up lines of coke on it.
@onlymyrailgun
And the big announcement is......A 25" iMac! We here at Apple believe that this will change the nature of computing forever and to make this an utter surprise, devoted an entire department for the past 3 years to sow the seeds of ideas that we were making a large iphone. take that internet!
@kingtaz

I agree with you that a closed ecosystem is shitty, but I think that simply putting Leopard on a 10" touchscreen would be a huge helping of fail. There's a reason the ModBook doesn't sell well, and it's because very few people want/need something like that.
In this form factor, most people want an excellent e-reader with excellent battery life, and full iPod features. Throw in a kickstand, nice dock accessories, and an attachable QWERTY keyboard, and it's certainly something most people would be interested in, if the price is right.
@onlymyrailgun
The name will be iPAD...
So Now You Know
@kingtaz
Sorry to break your bubble but this thing is going to run on the iPhone OS. Apple is planning a whole line of new touch computers running on the iPhone OS, it will be improved and expanded and may be renamed at some point to Touch OS or something like that. The concept of a new computer device without folders and windows and complex command structures has been Steve Jobs dream. This is a computer for the masses and the geeks will not like it at first. It is designed to sell media and apps from iTunes and make money for Apple. It will not be a geek box and will not have CTRL+V and CTRL+C commands. It will be easy enough to use for a Toddler to run and powerful enough for a Doctor to use in his practice. You will see a whole line of these touch devices all running this same OS. They will not be open to outside software or content except what you can run in a browser.
@onlymyrailgun
John:: Are you excited for the big speech tomorrow that will have a significant effect on the economy?
Jane:: Oh you mean the "State of the Union" address.
John:: NO, No, no!! Steve Job is announcing Apple's latest creation!!!
@HighestRanked
"@DarkElfa what a douche bag."
Headline: Pot calls kettle black.
@garysturn
Yes, at its core the iPAD's OS will be little more than the same old iPhone/Touch OS version 4.0, but this time they will rename it Apple Mobile OS 4.0 to make it less tied into the iPhone.
@DarkElfa
I agree with the first half of your statement; I noticed it too. The second half of the statement... describes itself.
@DaHarder
The iPad? But it's not that time of the month yet!!
@radicalxedward :
iPod DX?? :D
@radicalxedward .keep in mind that that price is the conversion of a foreign currency and doesn't account for the fact that said country could have high import taxes on electronics that raise the price over the US one.
also, i hope that the 3g is optional and suspect that the iphone will not be discussed at all. all this 'no more just ATT' that is going to be announced is merely an unlocked, dual format device that you can take on ATT, T-Mobile or Verizon, Sprint as you wish. (or even take overseas to whomever)
If it can't run Firefox, all the plugins, and real flash, then I don't want it. I need it to be able to do everything a laptop and PC can do as far as web based computing goes. I need to be able to stream Netflix, watch Hulu, play flash games all day long.
If it's just an iPod Touch with a 10" screen, then it's a pass. For that money I'll end up with whatever tablets come out trying to clone it that end up being more open.
@nicholiservia Many products and services that have been introduced in the past were first panned by critics only to become very successful later. There so many dedicated tasks that a tablet is suited for, i.e. in schools teachers can use them for routine taskes like attendence and distribution of homework assignments as well as having communication to adminsitrative staff at their fingertips. In medicine a tablet is the gateway to medical records. I believe that in a year or two we'll all look backand say how did the world functin without an ipad (whatever it'll be called)

Hey troll's, write things that will get downranked below here:
@geekthree Okay.
@geekthree
Microsoft invented the iPhone!!! Apple owns Windows!!!
@geekthree
Will there be a follow up after the event with comments by P.Obama from the White House?
Anybody else's underwear is unusually moist?
@trainwrecka
In what, Hardware or Software? Microsoft is #1 in software. It's not even close.
lol at the fact I got downranked for saying that...
Ahh humor on engadget.. carefully worded must be it.
No way it's going to make me shed tears of joy like the iPhone did
@Kiwi
A phone made you cry...
@Kiwi
You say that now...
@Kiwi Sad, just fucking sad..
@Johanu
Not his fault. Was the app.
It looks nice. But it's Apple, they insist on making their products very pretty! Let's just hope it works as well as it looks.
Steve Jobs, I LOVE YOU
In B4 the Apple Haters
Cue the rabid Engadget Trolls who will bitch and moan that Engadget is reporting rumors about a device that a lot of people are actually interested in.
Thank You Engadget for reporting these rumors.
@TheRogueFFAngel
As for the rumors for themselves....
I'll be SHOCKED if the iPhone is even mentioned beyond OS 4.0.
I really don't see it going to another company tomorrow. That would completely overshadow the iSlate....
I mean really this event is going to be focused on the Apple Tablet and that's pretty much it...
add this to your rumors:
macbook that turns into a tablet! BAM!
@IceTheGreat
With what looks like, assuming that photo above is in any way illustrative of the real thing, no ports other than a headphone jack and maybe a place to plug it into a wall.
Cloud computer, assuming you pony up for that sweet, sweet 2-year 3G contract.
900 Euro??
Ow.
@Rumil
According to Google, assuming an equal price on both sides of the pond:
1,267.32 US dollars.
@LAY I don't actually believe personally that it will be that much. If it is, it would be new product suicide.
Ah, but you forget. It's APPLE.
That means that there is ALWAYS going to be a small percentage (or in the case of these articles, roughly a third of all commenters) who, unlike those OTHER, FAIRWEATHER fans, truly believe they will achieve physical, spiritual and sexual enlightenment by purchasing at least one of every holy object that the Prophet Jobs - in his wisdom - chooses to bestow upon this unworthy earth.
iMen.
AGAVAGAMOOSHABADOO!
I'm crazy and frothing at the mouth like a raving dog with rabies!
Give it up now Apple I cant take the suspense any more!
I need teh Apple crack!
WTF? MY underwear is moist! Apple effect?
cant wait till tomorrow.. I gots 3K in hand ready to buy anything Apple tells me to!
AHAHHA
@NAME You should look for the iDogshit posted on another story. I hear that will be $3K.
"... to deliver their products with an eye to the design that had grabbed readers in print."
Uhhhhh yeah.
Just to let you know: The tablet won't be called the iSlate because that sounds too much like 'isolate', and Apple's new device will be all about inclusion and networking.
It'll be called the iPad. You read it here first.
@clovis
U apple haters are a funny bunch. U truly believe that don't you? Anything to allow u to make a crack at Apple.
Too bad Apple just reported some ridiculous profits YESTERDAY. Where were all the haters then?
It's obviously gonna be called the iTablet or iSlate.
I'm leaning towards iSlate.
@clovis
No, it wil be called the iNewton 2 -the Revenge
